Service Time - What to do?

Im happy to take the box to CPS and I'll continue to do so. I haven't tried an OPC yet but I'll only start doing that when I want something fancier and newer...if ever...

History of a car is all good and well, its a talking point, kind of like owning a rescue dog, every one you meet you say its a rescue, or in this case its got FPSH...

I haven't had my car serviced yet but Dove House up the road want £255 minor service £325 major. Plus vat. I can live with that. £70 brake fluid change. I send my Citroen to the local tyre/service place who I've used for years and chances are the bill is not much less than that. The local guy I trust but it's all about speed there and couple of times I've had to go back and point stuff out that I think isn't quite right. For the small difference in price I'll send the boxster to the specialist.

If the local bloke I trust were the guy that was going to do the work rather than whichever fitter was available next I might think differently.  Also if I were ever to consider trading up I might look at the stock in Dove House which seems to be fairly priced and I might just get a better trade in on a car they know and have serviced.

i do basic services myself. if there is anything more specialist I will take it somewhere.

Doing it yourself, also means you have the correct oil for top ups etc. Mine was apparently serviced by an indy (stamp in the book) not long before i bought it, but judging by the state of the filters and the oil that came out of it, I dont think it had been touched.... At least doing it myself (and keeping all receipets (and scribbling mileage on at the time), i know it HAS been done.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update - I had the front coolant pipe replaced as it was heavily corroded. The others were okay. It's the one that connects left to right with the aluminium pipe that goes over the sub-frame.

So to do this the sub-frame had to be dropped.

Cost (including genuine Porsche parts and labour) £253 - and this included a brake fluid change!

I hope now it's obvious why I started this thread!

What? Where?!

Woking, Surrey. I've been using him for years and he's competent, extremely honest and not expensive (a rare combination). Furthermore every friend that I've sent to him has come away extremely happy. Even ones with other makes of "specialist" car like the Honda S2000.

It's why I opened this thread. Ultimately what is the Indy stamp worth in terms of extra cash spent on maintenance?

There has been much talk about specialist knowledge of an Indy and I do buy this - but only up to a point.

So what I got for my Indy service was oil and filter, a pollen filter and a very thorough check of the car which threw up some advisories. Some of these advisories are irrelevant such as discoloured centre caps on the wheels. Others though I had checked by my mechanic like:

1/ The corroded front coolant pipes - now changed.

2/ Worn front suspension top mounts. My mechanic examined this and yes, they are worn, but there is no knocking or any notchiness in the steering (so the bearings are okay). In light of this my mechanic advised that we leave these until some discernible symptom becomes apparent. This sentiment was echoed by the RAC when I recently had to call them after running over a rock and splitting the front tyre. He said exactly the same thing - if there is no knocking and you can't feel any notchiness in the steering then leave it alone.

3/ Badly cracked coil packs on the passenger side bank. The Indy said the same thing 2 years ago and they have been faultless since. That said, I can detect some hesitation when the engine is completely cold so I will replace these now.

So I will probably continue to get the 2 year service done by an Indy. For this privilege I'm paying a premium of approximately £150 every 2 years (or £75pa). For an Indy stamp this is probably worth it for a potential buyer.

For everything else I have done I will have a stack of invoices from my local mechanic, which should appease even a difficult buyer. If I ever sell the car that is! Which I can't imagine I will any time soon.

Who did the work?

As you say some stuff is simple enough and routine. But would I go to the bother of assessing each job my car needs and sending some to back street garage and some to Indy? I don't have the time or inclination any longer so most stuff is done by an indy. I've had though interim oil change done elsewhere and also disc and pad change in the past.

A bit off topic but if you used a place in Woking you don't happen to have a grey 987 in Bisley do you?

Not me. Cobalt Blue 987.1 - I live in Woking.

I'm lucky to have found the guy I use in Woking. The garage is run by 2 guys and one does motorbikes, the other does cars.

I had gone there with a motorbike misfire that I could not diagnose having spent almost £300 to have it "fixed" at another bike service place. They insisted it was fixed even though the misfire remained completely unchanged. The guy that does the bikes revved it a few times and told me exactly what was wrong even though I'd explained that I would be fixing it myself. His advice was 100% correct.

So I now use them for both car and bike.

Change the coil packs myself yesterday. Quite fiddly doing the packs furthest forward. 6 x Beru ZS178 procured from ebay for £100 so figured I might as well replace all of them.

2 of the replaced coil packs were cracked and one was completely split open and rusting inside.

Could buy a new service book 😜

I got one from OPC Brooklands. £13.90 inc VAT. Full proper service book for my model year(s) Boxster. Only thing it lacks is the sticker in the front of the book. But I have that in the old one.
