Painted centre console

Looking for opinions & pics of other 987 owners centre consoles...

Is the preference to have the console in body colour or not??

I’ve managed to acquire a cobalt blue console, but my Boxster is Atlas Grey. I know the easiest thing would be to fit it & see what it looks like, but I’d rather only do the job once to be honest. If I get it painted in Atlas Grey, it won’t quite ‘lift’ the interior, which is why I wanted a painted console.

Thoughts??

Silver if you have a dark colour car. But then you need some silver in the centre section too. A silver centre console in a sea of black would look a bit odd.

Did mine recently in GT Silver (body colour). My interior was quite dark but the console now ties in with the seat belts and other silver trim, and makes the interior a little brighter.

I think you only have 2 choices. I think Atlas is preferable but Silver might work.  Trouble is Silver will not be a a straight match for existing trim so effectively you introduce a 4th colour to the interior mix. Personally planning Atlas for mine as I have Grey interior and I don't think anything else will work. Also thinking of painting the Silver strip across dash and glove box Atlas to tie in with it.

Cheers guys, I kind of guessed that the general consensus would be to change the colour.

I thought silver would look good & it definitely lifts the interior, decisions decisions...

@red rocket - when are you planning on having yours painted, would be interested in seeing what it looks like. 👍

Haven't decided yet; depends whether I can pick up a console for a reasonable price. Was hoping I would see yours done first! ;)

I have Atlas exterior (fab colour) and have had my console painted to match the silver interior trim. I think it really lifts the interior.

Struggling to upload a picture but happy to email if you pm me.

In the meantime I will keep trying

Cheers

Here we go, managed to post some images.

I asked the bodyshop to match the colour to the silver interior trim.  They are Galvano silver but a porsche special colour to to buy the paint would have been £££

The colour match is great 👍

My initial thought was to go Atlas but other than a shine I wasn't sure for me it would be a good investment.  Pleased with the silver 👍

Good luck whichever way you go with it.

I have had several cars with a coloured centre console, personally I think they are a big improvement over the original soft touch rubber which is inevitably marked, they are the vast majority of the time colour coded to the exterior of the car. - The only exceptions to the rule I have seen are when a carbon centre console is fitted, or as mentioned above, the car is dark with a dark interior, black on black as an example, where a silver console has been fitted.

Included below is an Atlas Grey console against Metropole, the car was Atlas.

Should you want more of the Atlas let me know

I have previously bought with the colour coding already completed, as mentioned I think it adds so much to the interior I have also subsequently had some painted.

I have always used a bodyshop, stripping off the soft touch is a horrid job, you also need to be careful not to scratch the plastic as your then effectively creating defects, the bodyshop paint / paint quality also matches the exterior, I personally think the finish is superior to what you would get out of a rattle can.

Thanks. Certainly looks good.

Cheers for the pics! They’re really helpful.

Really don’t know which way to go with mine. Atlas makes sense to match the bodywork of the car, but there’s really not a big enough difference to the standard finish to warrant the additional cost at a body shop. @Karussell - how much have you paid to have the console painted??

Silver is probably the preference for me at the moment, a good contrast & looks great in my opinion.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet & fit the cobalt blue one I’ve got & see what it looks like. Atlas has blue in the colour so shouldn’t be that bad, should it?? 🤔

If you already have a painted one then it's not so hard to self paint in silver as long as the surface is smooth and not cracked or gouged.

To be honest, I was surprised at the condition of the painted console I bought, expected it to be a little damaged but in fairness it’s in excellent condition. A few marks were quickly removed with a quick pass of the machine polisher & some Megiuars ultimate compound.

I could paint it myself, but wouldn’t want to make a shyatee job of it so I think if I’m going to change colour I’ll take it to my trusted painter to do.

The only thing I’m a bit cautious about is removing the roof switch - the console I’ve bought is from a Cayman so has a small blanking cover where the roof switch goes on the Boxster. It’s in there tight & doesn’t want to shift. I’m hoping the roof switch won’t be as problematic to remove.

Yes, but not that sort of Blue! Personally i think it would look completely out of place but nothing to stop you trying if you fancy it. You can always remove it again.

Having other thoughts, what about wrapping it??

Dunno if I can be bothered with taking it to the paint shop, may even sell it on.

Mine is currently away to be hydro dipped. Saw some of the dark carbon fiber style work and was amazed, picking it up on Thursday, also getting the wing mirrors dipped to. After 15 years and many miles they were well past their best.

The shop said the console is a difficult job, due to the contours of it, etc. it can't be one single dip. But they're confident in their work so looking forward to the results. Quoted 100£ for the job too (center console) which I thought was reasonable too.

Will be interested in seeing some pictures when you get it back.

If I keep it, then more than likely will paint it. Colour choices are either Atlas to match body or silver, which I think will still look good plus be easier to sell at a later date.

Any ideas what ball park figure I’m looking at to have it painted? Bearing in mind it won’t need the soft touch taken off as already factory painted.

sure, i've dropped it off here: http://yorkhydrographics.co.uk/  they specialised in Wheel refurbs so on Facebook its RAW Coatings, and they've branched out into dipping.

Just south of York, the plan is to pick up the parts tomorrow, they haven't called to say there's a problem so I take it that's a good sign.

I'll post pics of the completed parts tomorrow evening, it wont surprise me if they tell me they under quoted for the job... so i'll also be able to advise the total costs.

they do also offer a courier service, but i'm working in the area for a while so dropped the parts off. turnaround was 1 week.
