sure, i've dropped it off here: http://yorkhydrographics.co.uk/  they specialised in Wheel refurbs so on Facebook its RAW Coatings, and they've branched out into dipping.

Just south of York, the plan is to pick up the parts tomorrow, they haven't called to say there's a problem so I take it that's a good sign.

I'll post pics of the completed parts tomorrow evening, it wont surprise me if they tell me they under quoted for the job... so i'll also be able to advise the total costs.

they do also offer a courier service, but i'm working in the area for a while so dropped the parts off. turnaround was 1 week.

Thanks, also convienent as I work in York

Went over to pick up the console and mirrors, some good news and bad news. Good news is the console is looking great, but it's not quite finished, they need to attach the last few bits, arm rest, etc, they said I could leave with it and out it back together myself, or come back tomorrow and they would have it all back together. The mirrors, however, were a nightmare, I spoke with them yesterday about them and basically because of the shape of the mirror, mainly that big (i guess aerodynamic) hole between the mounting point on the car and the mirror itself, the dip just looked awful, the carbon effect didn't allign, you could tell that it was a wrap and just didn't look great, anyone with an eye to detail would notice and think they were fresh off the Halfords discount shelf... so options were to paint or leave stock... as they were pretty scratched up, i decided to paint a satin black to match the wheels and side vents of the car, picking them up tomorrow as they need to have the motors, etc, reassembled.

i've attached some pics I managed to snap quickly in the rain, you can see the newly painted mirror in the bottom of one of the photos... and also a box, which contains all the bits that need to be reattached! hopefully tomorrow, it'll all be ready to be collected and I can get back on the car and get some pics. The pics below were also taken before they were cleaned up... so might look a little dusty, grainy. 1 week defintely pushed them (I need the car back on the road for Saturday), so would definitely give a 2 week timeframe in the future, this might just be because of how busy they are!

Tomorrow afternoon, i'll update again with the final prices, and more pics if poeple are interested in seeing.

Everything all back and fitted, attached some pictures. Personally love the look of it, with the sunlight it almost has a golden reflection to it.

Mirrors were a pain, they came back still not quite flush, so had to disassemble and put back together again. but in the end all good, in hindsight I would have done just the console! console was £120 inc VAT. they have different style of carbon, gloss, satin, etc.

next job, is to get the gear boot and handbrake retrimmed.

Love the centre console, looks great!

So now completely undecided on silver / atlas grey / carbon dip, gonna give it some thought methinks.

How resistant is the carbon dip to wear & tear?

First time I've had something dipped. But alot of people have motorbike parts dipped, mainly fuel tanks, so that must go through some abuse. Got an extract from their website which says it's as durable as a high end paint job. Time will tell I guess, but for an interior console, I'm not worried at all.

"Hydro dipping is as durable as the paints and clears you use. If you use an automotive grade paint, then your graphics will be as long lasting and beautiful as the paint on a new car. Different paints are used for different applications, such as auto grade paint (for rims and auto parts)"

Just picked up a console for a decent price on Ebay. By way of a test had a first little go at it with some Acetone based nail polish remover and a Scotch pad. Looks like that should remove the scratched soft touch coating quite nicely. Bought some Grey high build primer in case there are any residual scratches. May wet sand prior to priming anyway.

Could you not cover it in leather Peter, or is the shape to complex.?

Not really a fan of glossy painted centre consoles myself, but I think a leather or alcantara one would look fantastic.

Definitely couldn't do it myself and with 38 years history in the leather industry i can't stand Alcantara! I like the painted consoles i've seen but in any case plan to keep my original Stone Grey console for a while in case i decide to refit. I did wonder about using satin lacquer but not sure how easy that would be to polish up without going glossy.

Fitted my newly painted (Atlas Grey) console today. Gives the cabin a bit of a lift but not so noticeable/effective perhaps as  brighter colours such as  Red, Yellow or Orange which have been  pictured in various threads. For the benefit of anyone considering in future thought i would do a bit of a write up.

Given the notorious soft coating of the consoles in the earlier 987 and doubts over possible results i bought a spare console to paint. This gave me a chance to play with minimal risk and leaves my existing Stone Grey console intact should i decide to refit.

First off this website has an excellent guide and video on how to remove/refit a console https://www.macarbon.com/porsche-2999/987-boxster-a-cayman/987-interior/987-center-console

First task is to strip down the console, e.g. remove armrest and lid, banana, ashtray, cig lighter and 12v power socket (see guide above) and coin tray. Had heart in mouth when attempting to remove the cig lighter and power socket with rubber mallet but no problem in reality. Just grit teeth and smack them!W6ws1QV.jpgimOqmFA.jpg

Next remove ALL the soft touch coating. This was pretty easy - used a £1 bottle of acetone based nail polish remover (Boots or Superdrug) and a coarse Scotch pad. As the acetone flashes off the coating rubs off in little bits.uGo1LXF.jpg

After washing it down you can see which bits need further work. I had to go over some areas. I also wet sanded with 600 grit and made sure to get into all the nooks and crannies with a  blade. Pretty sure any remaining soft coat wouild interfere with subsequent paint, so important to ensure no traces.

Once satisfied i cleaned with panel wipe (homemade distilled water/IPA mix).

After studying videos, especially

gave console, banana, ashtray lid and console extension two coats of plastic primer followed by a couple of coats of high build primerixwiYvN.jpgOH7ZoJu.jpg

I found the high build primer (ProXL) gave a very smooth finish which only required minimal wet sanding (800 to 1200 grit) in small areas where my technique wasn't perfect.

Then, after degreasing again with panel wipe gave all pieces 2 or 3 coats of metallic base coat, sourced locally from Refinish Systems in Yeovil.  For the final finish decided to go with Satin rather than Gloss lacquer (ProXL again). This gives a more subtle finish and i hope may be less susceptible to finger marks (don't understand the recent vogue for piano Black trims and had a laptop with a gloss Black finish which was awful). rOheQny.jpgYsZ7Xwv.jpg

Very happy with results. Gives the cabin a subtle lift. As yet undecided whether to paint dash trim too.BralfLz.jpg

NB all done with rattle cans. Having done some other paint projects i think my techique has steadily improved. Also recommend a spray can 'gun' like this one https://www.halfords.com/tools/garage-workshop/welding-and-metal-work/can-gun-1-spray-can-tool-304086.html  and Youtube videos by Customspraymods (same guy who did the Lab Japan vido above).

Hope this helps anyone thinking of this mod. If i can do it so can you!

Awesome job, looks great!
I’ve still not decided on which colour to go for, kind of forgotten that I have a spare console until I got a notification for this thread.

How did you remove the roof switch from the console?

With some difficulty! Think I used a trim tool from underneath and pushed down at the same time. NB with console normal way up  the switch comes out underneath, unlike the power sockets.

Got mind sprayed Lapis Blue to match the bodywork

Very pleased with the result.

That looks great!

I still haven’t done anything with the cobalt blue console I acquired, however after seeing yours I might just fit it in my Atlas Grey car as the blue looks great in yours. Can’t see it looking too cr*p in an Atlas coloured car...

I'm not so sure, but it's not a huge job so you can always switch again if you don't like it.

Not sure I’d go Atlas Grey to be honest, don’t think there’s a big enough difference in colour between the standard finish & it being in Atlas Grey. If I was going to change the colour I think it would be to GT Silver - to give the cabin a lift.

Might have to give my trusted paint shop a call to see how much it would cost to have it done.
