Renovo Soft Top Reviver - Dark Blue

Recommended Posts

I bought a 500ml bottle of Dark Blue Renovo last June when I got my Boxter and gave it a coat then as part of a refresh and as I had some left over I used virtually all of it on another coat yesterday and ordered a new 1 litre bottle from Amazon Prime which arrived at lunchtime. When I opened it and started to use it the smell was disgusting not unlike rotting eggs and is still with me a few hours later. It seems quite different and more difficult to spread, slightly thinner, but actually a more vivid blue so not all bad.

I have left it drying overnight with the intention of another coat tomorrow prior to a finish coat or two of Fabisil Gold.

So, was the original bottle ‘old’ and the new one more how it should be including the stink or vice versa? Or have I picked up a ‘fake’ bottle via Amazon?

Any ideas or similar experiences?

You’ll have a stinky roof now, but at least the local cats will steer clear... 😂

Had a nice Saab convertible as a company car a few years ago and our (fat) cat adopted the roof as it’s bed. When the car went back three years later it had a big sag in the front of the hood. Thankfully no issues with the Boxter although I woke up this morning and swear I could taste/smell the bloody stuff in my mouth.

Round two this afternoon and think I’ll wear a mask.

@Jeansbeetle, let’s compare notes later!

I’m not sure if I’m happy with it after two coats, need to dry more first though. Seems patchy under the garage light. It’s better than it was though as it well well faded. I’ve got some left from the 500ml so not sure I put it on thick enough, the second coat went on better. Might do another coat tomorrow if I’m not happy.

I went for a third coat and it finally looks a half decent blue. The stuff stinks in the container I use to apply it but tbf there is no smell on the hood itself. As I have plenty left and time on my hands I'm going for one more coat before a couple of coats of Fabisil Gold.

Mrs Greyanglia just laughs and says it was a black hood that I'm trying to turn blue!

What is it about Boxter ownership that turns us totally OCD? 😂

My son is doing A Level Chemistry so I'll get him to give the contents a once over as I'm no scientist. Think I'll wear a mask for the final coat as my Renovo is definitely well 'ripe' 🥴

Idle curiosity on my part.

Interested to hear what you think to the final finish, sounds like you're going for it.

Thanks

Well it’s a bit odd really as my hood is by no means new and almost certainly the original one from 2008 although it’s in pretty good nick albeit more of a greyish blue colour. I gave it a couple of coats of Renovo Dark Blue and Fabisil Gold when I got the Boxter last June based on info gleaned from a previous thread. The 500ml container I bought had no smell and that remained the case when I dug it out and finished it off a couple of days ago. The new 1 litre bottle stinks.

I’m getting there on colour (three coats so far) but I’m not bowled over by the results so far tbh and I’ve followed the cleaner and reviver instructions to the letter. I’ll get Greyanglia Jnr to give me chapter and verse on the chemical compound and report back. After Easter I’ll make contact with Renovo more from a customer feedback angle than anything else and see if they respond.

Well I’ve checked mine under the garage lights this morning and it still looks uneven in places but I think it’s shinny wear marks. I’ll check in the daylight later. I don’t think another coat will make it any better. It’s a big improvement on what it was and the roof is 16 years old after all.

Mine initially looked great, nice and blue. But 6 months later, back to grey again. The UV might break it down, I dunno but it was nice at the time. Probably won't bother again as it takes ages. This was a day later after fabsil.

Fabsil or Fabsil Gold ?  I thought Fabsil had a UV inhibiter in it, whereas Fabsil Gold doesn't.

So mine's got a dark blue hood that could do with some attention. However, I'm not liking the sounds of the results others are having with Renovo. Any other products or solutions to consider? Would a detailer be likely to have more success?

Difficult to answer really as I've only used Renovo in Dark Blue and not sure what else is on the market. I gave mine one more coat today and at last it's looking half decent. I'll give it a couple of coats Fabisil Gold and call it quits.

Still worth doing though but you may like to investigate a specialist giving it a going over. I've just had mine polished professionally and the result by machine is far better than I could achieve by hand.

Good luck and hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for the reply, just the next thing on the list!

I have a blue roof. It started looking a bit grey. Gave it 2 coats of blue renovo and was disappointed. Looked grey with a bluish tint. Didn't smell though. I then gave it 2 coats of fabsil gold. Looks grey with a bluish tint. Lucky I drive with it down most of the time. It seems in good nick it just has a vintage vibe. That said I wouldn't want it to be in yer face blue like some you see.

I think I'll go with a second coat of Fabisil Gold tomorrow if I can be bothered. I keep pointing out to Mrs Greyanglia that next to our black Alllroad it looks blue but she insist it's bluey-black so I give up!!

I think it's because the convertible cover is quite a bit more blue than the hood which I wouldn't want so it's fine with me.

This was it after I'd went to town on it with renovo cleaner, fairy, milton and car shampoo.

This was it in the middle of the second coat.

I would say it's pretty much exactly like it was before I started to be honest now, 6 months later. Disappointing but it looked great short term, probably last if it was garaged but it's outside 100% of the time.

Mine is worn in exactly the same places. Tbf, Renovo do recommend applying the stuff every six months.
