We are looking for a 986 manual for sale around either the Solihull or Exeter areas

up to £8000 for excellent example

Some people will probably throw in the car too, for that price.

@travel, read up as much as you can and don't spend too much just because it is low mileage or low owners, rubber ages whether used or not for example.  Some will scare you; IMS bearing is a typical one but there is a lot more scare mongering than real problems, but ask questions on here @Porschevirgin1968 at least will testify that you get good info, although he still hasn't bought but has seen a few examples now.

When you do identify one, read all the service history and check for thing like a recent clutch, newish brakes and tyres and also any suspension work.  Check for working a/c and headlamp washers (if fitted).  If none of these have been done, received wisdom (and personal experience) is expect to spend £1.5 to £2k on top of normal running costs like tax, insurance and servicing sorting it out after purchase.  Some jobs can be planned over a coupe, of years so not too onerous and costs will obviously be lower if you're handy on the spanners yourself.
