I must say my 987.1 with the PASM feels absolutely perfect on track with standard suspension set up. Porsche certainly know what they are doing. Even with a PASM switched out, it feels good.

Car at the moment looks like a mere skeleton of itself upon the two post lift. Everything is stripped off and the surrounding shelves and floor, looking like the start of a jigsaw puzzle!

Check Autodoc on a good discount day on their app, they will be under £900, currently £786.70 at only 30%, but remember the 7-8 days shipping.  Their Sachs (Factory OE) front top mounts are also priced under £30 today which is good.

@phazed what also dramatically improves feel is new inner and outer steering arms even if they do not feel worn.  I refreshed mine with TRW (OE supplier) at the start of this year and it just gave the steering a much more direct feel. 

Inner 996 347 322 03 or TRW JAR1013 (comes with clips, boot, nut and rack grease), outer 996 347 131 03 or TRW JTE760, currently £17.09 and £30.57 respectively each on Autodoc.

There are lots of different Koni spec dampers. The FSD/Special Active is good value for the road but if I was building a track focussed car I'd probably look elsewhere.

I hear what you are saying. After a lot of research last night, without spending a fortune, the Bilstein B8 with 30 mm lowered springs seems to be a fair compromise.

I have just been browsing through the various pages on suspension upgrades on the Design911 site. I have already spent at least 6K in my mind! Obviously this isn’t going to happen and having all these sweets on the shelf just makes life difficult!

There is loads of stuff on 996 suspension options on 911uk. Different cars for sure but lots of similar parts. 12 cars with a variety of brands and specifications. The organiser Mike / Maldren is fairly local and seems like a helpful guy the couple of times I have met him. Koni/eibach gets a mention

No swapping nitron suspension for track days with this one!

The weight distribution at the rear of the 996 is completely different to the 986 so take care!

After a lot of deliberation and web wandering I ordered a set of Billy B8’s with a set of H&R 30 mm lower springs. These coupled with polybushes on the suspension and ARB’s and a few tweaks should get me going and take it from there.

I would also get some rose joint adjustable rear toe links. You will most likely need them to get the optimum or more aggressive geo for the track with that suspension choice.

Just keep what you've got and get a DSC sport controller. You won't believe what it does and you can easily tune just about every aspect of the car's handling a with laptop. It does real time data logging too.  You'll have a more comfortable road car that will become a track monster at the touch of a button.

Lot of money new but they do come up used from time to time. I got mine on 911.com for less than half price. And a nice member on here sold me a cheap accelerometer which you need with .1 cars.

Not much use on a 986 with no PASM options.

Speak to David at Copse Automotive near Woking. They are Porsche specialists who do the mechanicals and setup/tuning for a lot of the 986 race cars, including at least one season podium car.

Aside from that, BC Racing coilovers are well regarded and fairly 'affordable'

M96 and M97 engines have a sump baffle, but as they have a shallow sump (they can be considered in a way to be dry sump) the key for track use is the deep sump as the oil pick up is only on one side of the engine.
