    Looks great with those wheels!

Cheers, I’m enjoying the look more and more.

After I’d washed it last week prior to striping it was sat at the end of the drive whilst I done the wife’s car. The sun was setting and I have to say I was distracted by admiring it instead of the job in hand. I wouldn’t describe the 981 as a classic beauty but right angle and right light and it does impress.

  2. Took two cars to the restaurant for my birthday lunch with the family. After lunch they turned left for home, I turned right for 3-4 hours of fun in the Lil’ Red Devil on the twisties.

Been a couple of weeks since I drove it, really is a bit of a rocket when hoofing to overtake safely 😁

Every days a school day, good to know that for the future. 👍

Yeah, mine has those bits colour coded. Wasn’t completely sure about it at first but it’s grown on me.

Looks great @red rocket - nice one. Good to hear the review on RPM, they did the most recent service on mine just before I bought it.

Not been anywhere yet mate-I’ve only been a Boxster owner since September last year and didn’t drive my 986s much over winter. Now in my 981 so looking forward to top down motoring and rediscovering some Scottish roads.

Tried 2 981s’s today. Made my 2.7 feel like it was broken. Nicely quick. Not Tesla rapid of course.

so deffo 3.4 (unless there is a unicorn spec one appearing…)
PASM is on my must have list now.

not fussed on extended leather or sports exhaust actually.

got a couple of others to try next week…

Yeah see, it’s best to form your own opinions if it is possible to get real experience. For me if I were looking for another one I’d still have PSE and extended leather at the top of the list.

Here’s a bit of a wordy review I did when changing from 2.7 to 3.4 last year

Short version. Unless it was a straight road then me in the 2.7 vs me in the 3.4 wouldn’t be any different in terms of speed. And either will be illegal quickly.

I expect the only place (other than an open straight - where there will ALWAYS be something quicker) I’d be able to be quicker than me with an S is on track. And I haven’t been on track for several years as I lost interest in that.

If I were changing for spec then a 2.7 wouldn’t put me off for the perfect car.

Pirellis rubbish? Nonsense, that’s just forum fodder. Not saying that PS4s aren’t better but Porsche didn’t fit ditch finder remoulds.

My only unanswered ‘regret’ when I upgraded was that I didn’t hold out to try a manual. But the rest of the car was so good I went for another PDK. When I’m just schleping in the motorway or in traffic though then the PDK is perfect so can’t really knock that.

    Looks pretty neat.

Did you make these up yourself?

Yeah, I don't remember where I got the mesh from but it was pretty easy.  The only fiddly part is getting it installed but not too long.

One of those jobs where the first side will take 30 mins of scraped knuckles and the second side will be 3 mins and easy.

I’ve done without heated seats for 8 years in the 986, but I do have to dress up like the Michelin man to keep warm on the colder days with the roof down and heaters on full. As long as you’re pressing on, the engine get nice and hot so the heating is quite effective, however if you have to take it easy for traffic or because of ice then it becomes quite uncomfortable as the blowers aren’t pumping out as much heat.

Most owners would just put the roof up, but it always seems a shame to do that on lovely crisp winter mornings, so heated seats will be a bonus for me👍

I've had three cars without any heating at all (cruelly including the VX220 in that list, the other two literally didn't have a heater matrix) and driven all on cold and bright Winter's days. Quite familiar with feeling like Michelin man, one time was with full motorbike waterproof gear, must've looked a right tw*t 🤣

Mainly as I like to do very cold days roof down and my back is always cold so as it’s an option I look for.
if there was a car that had loads of special options but that was missing I’d still of course buy it.
PASM had not been on my list as I was worried about the cost if it went wrong and cars I’d be looking at would be 12 years old and 60k so may need a replacement

Fair enough - I did do a couple of roof down trips whilst it was a bit frosty but bright.  Agreed that the seat would've been nicer there but I tend to go togged up anyway. Given the choice I'd have a warm hat over a heated seat, feel the cold on my shiny head 😆

I don't think I've heard of PASM going wrong as such. Obviously there must be some instances of failure but it's not on the "top 5 things that might go wrong on a 981".  If it was an Audi R8 then absolutely it's a major concern, I guess Porsche decided not to buy those components from Cadburys like Audi did.

I am less concerned about the heating thing now, but heated seats is a must and for me at least PDK and 3.4, less fussed about sports chrono too.
    ...

Curious as to why this would be a must?  Don't feel obliged to answer if it's due to haemorrhoids, etc.

When I changed from my 2.7 to my 3.4 last August it was the one item on the spec sheet that I did have pause for thought for.

But then I figured that I survived 30 years of sports cars without the notion of heated seats, and I'm glad to say that now we're in to Spring - I survived without !!  In fact, I can honestly say that I missed the heated seat for oooh... total of 20 mins over 5-6 months, I can live with that.

It did make me wonder though if Porsche actually went to the bother of making seats without the elements and if they are part of all the seats, i.e. could be enabled with coding and a couple of switches added.  Doesn't bother me either way, but if it's possible and relatively inexpensive I'd consider it just for having the option there.

Right choice IMHO regarding Sports Chrono. I didn't actively exclude cars which had it but I'm happy that the one I bought hasn't. Less to go wrong and I don't miss it for a second. The sole advantage for me was as a shortcut to selecting the harder PASM. I can cope with pressing Sports and then PASM 🙂

    It was ever thus.
I think there is no one right answer. You could have following the curve, dead straight, or a combination of both, to taste. And then discuss the spacing between the letters.

The spacing I've got is as Porsche fitted.

That's the intention here, to make a printable paper template $539.95 less than the part linked on the top post.  Assuming no-one has already done a debadging/rebadging exercise on the 981's compared against previously... 🫠

Ooh I like that a lot. Not overly fussed about the vent by the bonnet line but not put off by it.

Mentioned to @daz05 about the Cayman bumper before as I like the vent holes but as with all these things it never seems as easy as unbolting one and bolting on the other.

That would be great, I can check it against my old Boxster. Would you like to PM me.

I’ve made a start on this.

Got the measurements done, it was trickier than I thought it would be initially as need to allow for a curved surface on a flat plane (the paper). In other words it didn’t look right, but was right 🫠

  13. I read about these trickle charger issues when they posted and makes me wonder.

I haven’t got a trickle on mine and didn’t in the last one either for the three years I owned it. Both ten years old.  Both on the original batteries as far as I know. Have I just been lucky?

They seem very good, the last one I hadn’t driven for five weeks once and it was good as gold - the only sign it wanted a bit of charge being that it disabled the stop-start for the first half hour or so.

None of my S1 Elises or VX220 would last more than 9-10 days. Was familiar with that turn of the key and click click click sound. So there was a similar apprehension with the Box when I got it.

I don't recall being worried about tyre usage there, although I could get through a set in 70 miles of track driving.

Have done about 15-20 days at North Weald I reckon with various cars, though all under a ton so not too sure how the wear would be for something more normal.  Doesn't seem overly abrasive but the last several times I've been have been deliberately on cold winter days.

You learn the same (maybe more) at 45 on tarmac at sub 5 degrees as you do at 80 on a summer's day.  Plus you get the satisfaction of Walshy trying to operate a stopwatch with frozen fingers.

  15. I made up a template when I was considering debadging mine.  I didn't de-badge but still got the template.

I wonder if I can make up a printable template, something that can span a few sheets of A4.  Though would need to guarantee it could be printed at exactly the right size.  At least it would be obvious if it wasn't right as the edges wouldn't meet the boot edges.

    I'll give it some thought.

    Wow 3 years OPC warranty

    reasonable cost??££

    wonder what it costs nowadays??

im looking for a 10 year old car so no t sure about OPC warranty on that….

About £650 a year I think, got a package deal for a little discount.  Did it save me £1,800 worth of worry?  Impossible to quantify but it was some peace of mind.  The only time you'd really find out is when something expensive broke.  PADM mounts seemed to be a failure point at the time, and replacement not always a guarantee against reoccurrence.

My current car doesn't have Sports Chrono, and whilst I didn't actively search for one without I haven't missed it at all. But I prefer that it's got less to go wrong.
