AOS, plugs, tubes, coilpacks, oil and filter change, new sump plug and crush washer and new air filter.

And cleaned off the mould from the interior after a winter undercover

Wiping everything down with anti bacterial wipes prior to laying it up can help keep the mould to a minimum.

Today was a day to install the engine and tranny back to the car with my teenage son. Just about all wires and hoses are now connected as are headers and transmission cables.

Tomorrow we'll install rest of the exhaust and other bit and peaces left to do - like throttel body to aircleaner connection and rear bumper. Then we'll turn then engine over for a bit without the fuel pump relay to get the oil circulating... then hopefuylly start the car... I have to admit that I'm a bit nervous... hopefully all goes well 😅

    Hi all,

Just wondering what others have done about rattly heat shields, not the main one over the cat, but the long sleeve one that sits on the pipe with the hole for the O2 sensor. See attached image, the thing with the cross-hatch pattern on it is what's very loose on mine and rattles like a skeleton having a w@&k in a biscuit tin!

    Many thanks, in advance :)

Either a big Tin or a small skeleton. Speaking of which, how does he have a tommy tank if he's got no...

Can't help with the heatshield btw😜

Id love to know whats inside a drone box. Often wondered if a balancing pipe could be welded between the two sides somewhere, but whether it would do anything depends on how the internals are arranged.

There's nothing inside as far as i can tell...just a single pipe on each side packed with glass fibre wadding.

I have recently installed a full SS system and that rear silencer was part of it. Its very loud/drone between 1500 - 3000 revs and I can't live with it, in its defence its not expensive and it sounds great when you are over 3000 revs.

So the original silencer is going back on I cleaned it up and found a welder who could be bothered to spend time on it on the seams. Im putting it back on the car on Monday and hopefully it will be fine.

The original silencer feels about 4x times heavier than the Gravity one shown, I think it must be totally empty inside🤣

I think you are correct..they are almost empty. They are basically a single pipe on each side surrounded by some glass fibre wadding. It no surprise they're so loud.

Just noticed the inlet and outlet pipes to and from the silencers are offset.  Pretty sure my drone box they are straight so no offset.  Generally OE boxes are offset like this where the inlet and outlet do not meet up and this forces the gasses to have to pass through the silencer's innards.  I think this image help explain it.  Of course we dont know if that exhaust above just has a pipe connecting the inlet and outlet with some bends in it.  I also found a pic of the standard exhaust cut open.

Ever wonder what's the inside of that huge muffler on your boxster? - Rennlist - Porsche Discussion Forums

You are right, I did not notice the offset so they have evidently altered the gas flow as well.

After fitting the exhaust, I've got the position sorted, I just can't get the bumper back on correctly, the left side looks like it's touching the crash bar on the inside, so won't quite sit where it should. Any hints or tips on this?

    Thanks.

Have you tried slackening of the exhaust mount in the centre and all the clamps so that there is some movement? Then try fitting the bumper prior to retightening everything.

I'm about to test this theory. I have the dronebox and it really isn't that bad. Don't notice it at all with the roof down which is how I usually go. Makes a good noise when your foot is down but it's just a little 'flat' sounding so I'm going to get a balance pipe welded in between the silencers. By all accounts this will kill the drone, give me a tad more midrange and sound wicked. Been meaning to do it for ages but I'm hopefully getting it done next week. Wish I'd done it before I had it fitted - would've been so much easier.

Something similar to this then? Circuitwerks in the US have modified the dronebox, linking the output pipes. They claim it makes for a better more subtle exhaust note.

Anyone on here fitted one yet?

Mine is a base model 2.5 litre so only has 5 hears. Easier to get it to 3,000 rpm on the motorway without really breaking the speed limit.

Yes indeed. Cheap and cheerful. I do prefer the standard exhaust but boy oh boy these sound great when you're driving in a more spirited fashion.

Re the DB killers - they do work but the car sounded like an asthmatic moped. Hated it and took it out after 5 minutes. I'd rather live with the drone!

The DB killers are much more effective if inserted after the u bends as they enter the silencer input tubes. Bit of a faff to do though, but does stop the asthmatic moped sound.

I want a bit more drama but I dont want to have to resort to this kind of thing.
Is the general consensus that the Carnewal upgrade is the best compomise next to a full PSE upgrade?
This is the next on my list after tyres, but I dont want to ruin the car.

Exhaust sounds are so subjective aren't they. In the last few years I've gone from completely standard 2.5 box to a Topgear drone box, then on to a 2004 3.2 box, then on to another standard box but with the bypass modification.

Hated the dronebox. The bypass modded one was also way too loud for my tastes so eventually reverted back to the 3.2 box which is perfect as far as im concerned.

A lot of people love the bypass system though, so it really is a matter of personal preference.

    Did you lose your engine?

No it's still going strong nearly eight years later. Fortunately it never lost its timing...just started to make some very worrying noises!Considering how much bearing debris was embedded in the oil pick up strainer and the state of the bearing when it was removed it seems I got lucky. A fair few oil changes have been performed since then and no obvious signs of any metal particles in the filters.

What year, engine, mileage? As above, if it looks in good condition just leave it as you are more likely to introduce an issue by changing it IMHO.

Just checked your posts and it’s a 2.5 Tiptronic just like mine. The 2.5 has the dual row bearing which doesn’t have an issue with failure unlike the layer single row bearings. The oil leak you are seeing may be from the RMS, but don’t discount a leak from higher on the engine that has run down to the bell housing. The 2.5 has plastic spark plug tubes with rubber seals which can fail, so worth checking these as it’s a pretty straightforward job to replace, whereas it’s a big job to remove the tip box😬

My dual row 2.5 bearing fell apart. Just thought I'd let you know😏

That's an unusual spec. Green, brown interior and the ultra rare wood option. Someone with a really good imagination must have specced it originally. Condition wise it looks like it needs a bit of tlc. The leather looks a bit iffy, but may look respectable with a decent clean.

I like it a lot...not so sure about the silver hardtop though.

  14. The Top Gear option with the heatsheilds is horrible. I bought one brand new a few years ago and it drones so bad it made the car vibrate. I quietened it down with motor bike baffles and tried to convince myself it was OK, but in the end I threw the towel in and went back to OEM.

I almost ended up hating my car with it fitted...Best thing I ever did was get rid. I now love my car again🙂

Latest update. The car was the first demonstrator for a dealership. Don't know which, yet.  Email from Porsche below..

I thought I would share the below from one of my technical colleagues who was in the business when the 986 launched, he shared some interesting info on your car.

This looks like one the cars that was registered for each centre at the end of 1996.

When Boxster was first launched all the dealers had a car registered and we did a Launch Event at PCGB.

We had somewhere between 30 and 40 cars lined up in the workshop, basically each centre then drove there demo Boxster back to their centre once the launch was complete, this appears to be one of those cars.

Whilst still nothing concrete as to if the car is the earliest, it’s interesting nonetheless though!

That was good of them to follow it up👍. You never know, there may be photos of the launch somewhere.

Today spent part of the day with my son at the garage doing last wrenching for the 2022 on the Boxster.

As always I have very little clue what you are on about, it seems like you are agreeing with me in a round-a-bout fashion but i'm never sure

IMHO the only way that Scooby-Doo would be worth £250,502 is if there was £235,000 in the boot, others might think differently in which case I will revert to the sage and wise words of @r1flyguy,,,,

    "A fool and his money.........."

It's worth it to someone who thinks it's worth it.

I work with someone who spends silly money (by my reckoning) on watches. I can't see the appeal, but they seems to please him.
