@EXY I salute you, you found that chip on my shoulder 🤣 the 550 is not as special as owners would have you believe. It’s a nice car but it’s an ‘extra’ edition of a mass produced car. But like a Ford Focus and it ST derivative.

By the way it’s a freedom of speech thing that and we shouldn’t be insulted for our personal opinions either, however wrong we may or may not proven to be in due course 😁

I'm not sure beinga derivative of a mass produced car has much to do with it. £57000 for a Mk2 Escort RS 2000 recently.

  2. Wow this thread is getting well juicy 😜. And 15 grand for a decent sports car...seems like a bargain to me. The 550 is bound to become collectable if it isn't already. I'm sure people said the same thing about 80's 911s 20 years ago, and we all know what's happened to those prices.

  3. I had an almost identical problem early this year. One day was running and starting fine and then the next day it would barely start and then not run. Turned out it was the MAF sensor that had failed suddenly. You could check this easily by unplugging your MAF...if it starts and runs OK  you may have narrowed it down.

I’m considering these. Apparently they’ll fit them for £225+VAT

Anyone got experience of the product? I know the company has a good reputation

    Watch this

I suspect its horrendously loud which is unsurprising considering that it's effectively bypassing the silencer.  At least its switchable though & great if you like that sort of thing.

I’ve found one from richardhamilton buts it’s for phase 1 and I’d ideally like the view the facelift options.

MAF?  Basically a duff MAF is sending almost impossible date to the ECU/DME which causes it to set fuel/air conditions that the engine won't run in.

When mine failed it was very lumpy running on anywhere between 3 and 5 cylinders at a time, detonation in the exhaust and had to be brutal with the throttle getting it running or pulling away and I was able to limp it home even with it dying a couple of times.  It ran like the proverbial dog, but only just.  If it is this, the easy test is to disconnect it and the car should run to a default basic engine map.  The connection is in the top of the engine bay on the passenger side towards the rear.  Also if you need on genuine is costly Bosch (OE supplier slightly costly, or second hand, my second hand one is still running fine after 3 years (£35 IIRC).

Agreed sound just like mine, but mine wouldn't run at all.

  7. My MAF failing went from car running perfectly to not running at all when i tried to start it the next day. Try disconnecting it and see what happens. Mine started instantly one it was disconnected and proved the MAF was defective.

Wrestled to remove my exhaust, then stripped it down to transfer brackets, tailpipe to a new Dansk. The grinder needed more for this task than I would have liked.

Couple of bolts now drilled out and the holes retapped.

Any tips for cleaning up the old exhaust tips?

Yep Autosol or T-Cut metal polish. They both serve the same purpose although the T-cut product seemed to have a slightly more abrasive action which helps slightly on heave crud build ups

The system on my 986S is not long for this world and I’m thinking of putting an aftermarket one on.  Any recommendations? Not too loud but distinctive and no drone. I had a TopGear mild sports s/s with 200 cell cats on my 996.1 and that did sound good. Budget around £500.

The Topgear 986 exhaust is horrible in my opinion and drones terribly.

    Well...

Firstly I want thank everyone for making me feel so welcome and for all the kind comments. I thought this was a friendly bunch of enthusiasts and it seems I certainly got that right.

I gave Paul (Trooper88) a call earlier and he certainly burst my Boxster bubble! It seems that I will have my work cut out if I decide to keep the car with a list of things that will need attention. The seller was fairly economical with the reality of the vehicle and I am going to give myself a few days to consider whether I am up to the task and just get out and drive the thing. I'm feeling a bit of an idiot for being so trusting but I'm sure I'll be feeling more positive again tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the interest and hopefully there will be a happy ending to this relationship.

    Cheers

    Jonathan

You'll have to tell us what up with it. I bet we're all dying to know!

Hi. In general terms Dansk/Miltek/TopGear/Carnewal seem to get good feedback. I'm sure folks who actually own them/have owned them will pitch in...good luck !

Unfortunately the Topgear 986 option drones like an utter barsteward!

Hi 2004 2.7 27.000 miles been standing during pandemic now cranks but not starting ,think it's fuel related any ideas most welcome .

I has a similar situation with mine several months ago....went from starting perfectly one day to not firing the next. Turned out the MAf sensor had completely failed. Easy to test...just unplug it and see if it starts.

  13. Mine used to suffer from this but I've noticed recently that it no longer does it. Had a bit of athink why this would be the case and I realised that the rattle stopping has coincided with changing the MAF sensor a few months ago. Previously the car used to rev to about 1500 rpm when starting from cold but with the new MAF there is no revs above 1000 rpm and is a much gentler start. Who'd have thought ehh!

Took the car for a drive (made an excuse that we need bread so I had to drive 10 miles to get some...). The car sounds fantastic now. Very quiet and finally no more bleeding ears from the droning. It might be my imagination but it feels like it runs better too. Clearly the engineers who designed and built the exhaust for these cars knew what they were doing.

I also put some mesh in the front bumper intakes, after I resprayed the insert grilles black again, and made sure the front bumper sits properly again. Everything lined up and tightened properly. Rear number plate light is also now back in business.

Very happy with my efforts of the last two days. I reckon tomorrow I may tackle the fuel flap actuator and replace that too (then again maybe I should quit while I'm ahead...)

I also had a dronemaster on mine for a couple of years. I improved it with baffles etc but eventually threw the towel in and replaced it with a genuine one from a 2004 model. The difference is remarkable and improves the whole driving ownership experience. Never again will I buy anything but genuine.

My 2001 Boxter S has the “00” coolant cap. I have no coolant issues. Should I replace with an “04” cap regardless. If so what’s the issue with the early cap?

i’ve heard they are unreliable on various sites what’s your view please

    Thanks

My 99 Boxster also has an 00 cap. No problems for 23 years so far!

And @Menoporsche not sure what is meant by the “over winter effect” but those discs look like a relatively long term problem on these pics. I can’t understand how a balanced brake system can allow one side of the disks to rot like this?

Mr Tv8 I have to agree. It seems bizarre that discs can wear like that. By no means the first time I've seen it though.

Bought myself the Bentley's manual off eBay. Been meaning to get one for ages and saw one (advertised as new...) so I grabbed it.

I'm going through an internal struggle at the moment because I have next week off work. Not going anywhere and I'm planning on spending the whole week playing with the car (I know, I know but it's the only 25 year old German girlfriend I'm ever likely to have...). My struggle is this; do I get the centre console delete kit, and the new radio as well? I have the exhaust to replace and a few other bits and bobs to do which should keep me fairly busy next week.

It would be very satisfying to get the radio working properly, and to have enough leg room for a change. Please note; I am not asking for advice because I know what everyone on this forum will say. I have enough little bits of car lying about in my garage and in my study at the moment. I don't want any more until I have at least cleared some of the backlog.

    Decisions, decisions.

Edited to say that unbeknownst to me the Bentley's book is being shipped from the USA. Damnit! That means I am going to have to pay import duties. I checked and the below is the details of the seller on eBay. I've been stung with import duties before and I specifically checked to see if it is sold from the UK :(

Ebay should be able to help you with this if it's been missed as being in the uk.
