Had a productive evening in the garage and just finished now. Fitted a new Varta 80Ah battery, it was pretty much identical to the old Bosch one. I checked the production code (from the YouTube video) whilst in the shop and was pleased to see it was manufactured a little earlier this year. Glad I rummaged to the back of the shelf, as the one at the front was more than 2 years old. Added bonus as they were doing 15% off all Varta batteries. Also bought 10ltrs of Elf 5w40 oil and an oil filter and air filter from the dealer and I changed the lot. Nearly 2 years since the last oil change and a massive 1700km done (which equates to about 170 trips to the supermarket lol). The oil filter was spotless again thankfully, and no sign of any metallic, or any other kind of particles.

I bought the oil and battery in Carrefour and was nearly buying the 10w40 oil as it is half the price (€50 for 10lts compared to €100 for 10ltrs of 5w40). I reckon the hot climate here would mean the 10w40 would be fine, as my car never sees temperatures below 15C. I chickened out at the last minute but maybe I go for the cheaper stuff next time?

As it was a rare visit to the engine bay to fit the air filter, I thought this time I should check the power steering fluid, never checked it in 6 years, and only recently found out there was a reservoir in there! Could not see anything on the dipstick at the 20c cold level? My garage was 30c this evening but should still have seen something? Anyone else had similarly low power steering fluid level and is it harmful to the car? I will go back to the dealer again tomorrow and see if they will sell me 0,5 ltrs of transmission fluid. A while ago they sold me some transmission fluid, so you never know?

Look forward to a drive out tomorrow and to see how it starts, as it has been struggling a bit of late.

Buy from OPC the correct power steering fluid its actually cheaper than most other places and you know its correct, it won't do your pump any good running it with low fluid but if it was that low you would hear a horrible noise coming from the front so your probably ok, but get it topped up.

    Hi,

Do you have the part numbers for these?

    What’s the cost?

    Thanks

Don't have the codes, as I just went through the options with the OPC parts guy, if you get the ashtray delete, the little rubber mat that sits at the bottom is extra so make sure you order that too, also the cup holders are right and left specific, I just ordered the drivers side(Right)

Cost, not sure separately, but for all 3 parts and with my Porsche Club membership discount it came to £57.82 inc VAT

  3. Got my parts from my local OPC and did the ashtray delete, easy job, looks ace and is now a useable space.

I also got the OEM cup holder that fits into the air vents at the same time, quite a neat little device which will be very useful.

Both very neat solutions but did you not look at putting the mic in the OE place behind the small grille on the instrument binnacle?

I looked at doing this but my mic was too big so it sits neatly on the instrument cluster, maybe that's why the above didnt use that

I did this nice little fix during my lunch break today and was amazed it only took me about 3mins! This has annoyed me ever since I bought the car and I always assumed it would need a replacement vent. I only needed to use a pair of small, long nosed pliers. 1st pic is before, 2nd and 3rd are after (yes, I will be cleaning the dust off later 😁).

You were lucky, mine were completely fecked, so had to replace with new ones, bit of a pain doing the drivers side due to the electronics so you dodged a bullet there.

I wouldn't really compare a 986 to a 981 they are simply different markets for purchasers now.  Would someone purchasing an E-TYpe (say) for £70k be thinking ...but I could get a F-Type for that money?  Probably not, they are different products in markets now.

I certainly consider my very early 986 as a classic car nowadays.

Would I swap mine for one of these? No but I can see why someone would purchase something like this.

Thats probably because yours.if you added up how much you have spent on your 986  would be in excess of £29k 😂

    Man maths aside.

Just scrolling through the classifieds on Pistonheads and came across this...https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/boxster-986-96-04/porsche-boxster-3-2-s-2dr/10525482

    2000MY 986S with 82k miles - £29k!!

How on earth can they justify that?

This is Porsches special classic edition, that sees them totally restore the car giving it special paint, new interior etc, there are a few threads on these, they have done it with some older 911's and some other models too.

My driver's side vent had partially collapsed. I was able to reassemble it with a pair of long nose pliers through the vent. The vertical and horizontal vanes clip together. My guess is air freshers or phone holders clipped to the vents cause the problem.

Did you find all the pieces? If so you might be able to reassemble them and sell them on?

All pieces look in tacked, so might stick them on eBay, good idea

Broke down in it....   (no not crying before everyone start no that one)

Seems a slam dunk regulator failure on the alternator, no voltage change at battery when engine is running.  Just didn't have enough battery to get me home having had ABS, then ABS & Battery warning flashing together sporadically.  Stopped to pick up some parts, ironically at my local OPC, and then got ABS and air bag (but no battery) warning plus fan and radio cut outs.  I gave up when the alarm started sounding whilst I was driving due tot eh voltage drop I imagine.  AA got me going again, only about a 20 minute wait so quite happy there plus it was a sunny day on a country lane so quite a pleasant location to break down, my luck would usually be in the pi**ing rain on a motorway.  Now to remove the alternator and get it to my local auto electrics/Bosch alternator specialist for repair....

Last time I went to my OPC my MAF failed, conspiracy theory anyone?

At least it was a simple fix.

  11. Replaced my cabin side vents, both were fecked, you couldn't direct the air as the vents mechanism seem to have collapsed, bought, what looks to be a brand new set from @map and just installed them this evening.

The passenger side was a doddle but the drivers side was a little more complicated due to the wiring harness for the lights etc, so over engineered, bot on  now and looks OEM fresh and new.

Nice way to spend a Monday evening

The window issue could be the electrics to the driver door. Does the driver's side window work normally otherwise?

I have an issue with mine that when closing the roof the windows don't go up on completion of the operation.

Earlier models only drop the window, they don't go back up after closing the roof. Not sure when that changed

Sticker looks good, subtle. Stick with it, different to all us that have gone big!
Where are your centre caps from? I've just had mine arrive from Ali express, haven't put them on yet but they look damn good for a few pennies!

I was following a Boxster into London a few years back and when the spoiler raised up it said "Feck You" 😂
