  1. The market is a bit crazy at the moment. I think a lot of sellers are trying their luck with inflated prices. When I bought my Cayman in mid 2019, a decent sub-100k mile car with FSH could be had for under £10k (with a bit of searching around), now it would appear that sellers are asking £10k for 115k+ cars with a Cat S marker. Personally, I reckon it is a temporary blip as lockdowns have left people with a little extra disposable income. For me, I think 9.5k is massively overpriced for an imported, written off, 987 Boxster.

  2. I'm also in this position but have very similar thoughts to @zcacogp. I keep toying with the idea of buying a 981 GT4 but I can't actually bring myself to spend that much money on a weekend car. In the past I have always set the criteria that I have to be able to afford to walk away from the car if the engine blows up or it gets written off on track. With my 986 and now my 987, I can afford to do that. Because of this, I can fully enjoy the car without worrying about resale, picking up stone chips, or worst comes to the worst, blowing up the engine. Personally, I couldn't afford to do that with a GT4 - It would wipe out my savings and despite being (I'm sure) a fantastic upgrade, I think it would just end up becoming a liability for me (I'd worry about every scratch or dent). For this reason, I think I'd enjoy it far less than my 987. I also enjoy working on my weekend cars but the resale implications for a GT4 would prevent me from doing this. I find it painful enough having to pay Jaguar £500 for an oil service, the prospect of paying Porsche £1k would just make me feel bitter and resentful about it.

So in short, the daydream is better than the reality for me. When I can afford to buy a Gt4 without worrying about resale or financial loss, I'll do it. Until then, I'm sticking with my Cayman and keeping the money in the bank...and feeling jealous of the people who do buy one ;)

  3. I've done a fair few track days in a 986 and my current 987 without any issues. One of the tracks has a long, fast left hander and even that has created no issues or plumes of smoke. I use standard road tyres and don't redline it through the corner (although will ping it out as it straightens out).

I think a lot of the stories about oil starvation are coming from the US where people have built serious track cars which are probably closer to a race car than a road car (running r compounds or even slicks is pretty common there). These cars will pull a lot more G than one would manage on road tyres (or with standard suspension)

  4. If you really want to do a good job, buy some epoxy mastic. It takes a long time to fully cure (about a week) but once it is dry, it is extremely tough. I left some in a plastic mixing cup and it has dried into a 2 inch thick "puck." I've hit it with chisels and hammers (just to see how tough it was) and nothing will scratch it.

Done the GT3 Master Cylinder....Took some bleeding!

Did you bench bleed (as per Internet wisdom) or not bench bleed (as per the MC instructions)? I still need to fit mine (going to do it after the MOT just in case I need to replace one of the brake lines) and am still deciding what approach to take.

@andygo, @Lennym1984 as you got this - I'm about to have my 987.1 callipers serviced so it would make sense to fit this at the same time.  Can you tell me if the two master cylinders look any different, as I'd be an idiot to buy this if my car already had one fitted?!  Thanks!

Is that non-UK restriction still there? I wonder if people are taking them back off now that the Brexit deal has been done, it might have been to protect themselves in case of no deal.

Unless you have fitted it, I doubt you'll have one. They look pretty similar (it's just a master cylinder) but I'll take a few photos of the markings if it helps

On a separate note, I also don't understand everyone's obsession with the headlights, and their lack of brightness.  They seem fine to me as well.  There, I said it...

You must have eaten a lot of carrots as a child!

  8. Just a thought but I too had "clutch judder" which was cured by fitting a new engine mount. I'm sure my clutch is probably due replacement soon but I was quite surprised by the difference the mount made (the old one was totally shot)

I would imagine it would depend on how you specified the Spyder.  If it has X73 then you get the stiffer bar.

Sorry I was talking specifically about the 987. X73 as an optional package was not available until the 981

For the tiny drip I had I did contemplate pulling the hose and applying Some Loctite 577 pipe sealant and I know that would cure it but was I just putting something off?

I tried some self amalgamating tape but it felt like a bodge

Bottom will be easier with top out of the way, so you are going to be doing both, if you follow my tips and you are handy, no need to drop subframe, not overly difficult just awkward and will take a couple of hours, factor in dropping subframe no brainer , more a pain than owt, under tray etc

Awesome. Once the parts have arrived I'll make a start

Mine was only a tiny drip on the return line, so the top pipe.

Same! I've lost probably a table spoon of coolant but I can't see it getting better and I'm not totally confident in it holding up on track etc.

I think I'm going to do both so will tackle the bottom one first as you suggest.

Was it hard to get the old ones out without dropping the subframe?

Coolant cross pipe done.....what a faff!!! Can understand why they drop the subframe, however it is not a requirement, if I did it again it would be easier once you’ve sussed the technique.

    Hi,

Like you, my new pipes began to weep after reusing the original cross over pipe and so I have ordered new ones.

Would you be able to share your technique, watch outs etc for fitting the new ones without dropping the subframe?

    Cheers

I do seem to remember talk about Caymans having a much noisier/boomier interior. Apart from not being able to put the top down that would be a show stopper for me.

Yeah that is true. It's not too intrusive but on some roads it can sound like the helmholtz resonance you get when you have only one window slightly ajar.

Teasing aside, they are both great cars and the difference between them in terms of handling is minimal. Given the fact that used Boxsters are cheaper than Caymans to start with, unless you really want a tintop or are planning to do a lot of track driving, I think the Boxster is probably the better overall proposition. I had already owned a Boxster (which I thought was fantastic) and do a few track days a year, so for that reason, I wanted to go with a Cayman.

To keep these cars looking and running as hey should you need to spend the money

I think they can definitely be kept in top condition on more modest budgets but as somebody else said, if you can afford it and it makes you happy, why not.

Yes Cayman's are better than Boxsters.

Having now owned both, I have to agree!  I do love the Boxster (and the top down element is fantastic), but the Cayman chassis (even at road speeds) just feels better.

  17. @Davey P when you put it like that it doesn't sound too unreasonable and it sounds like you have a nicely sorted car now. The crossover pipes will eventually need doing on my Cayman but I'm planning to rent a lift and do it myself alongside a few suspension upgrades (makes sense to do them all together given that it'll need an alignment)

  18. Wow! I thought my 3k over 2 years was a lot on my 986 (mainly track upgrades), 4k in the first two months sounds hard to swallow. Do you mind me asking what you had done?
