I went to look at the red GTS, not for me, I just couldn’t live with red(no offence) I then had a look at the Black 981S, it wasn’t up to my standard so I was pretty disheartened. Stopped for a coffee and browsed Autotrader and noticed a black 718 GTS nearly two hundred miles away that appeared to tick some boxes, filled the car up and drove all the way there to see it, private sale, low mileage, Porsche approved warranty until June 24, lovely condition and FPSH. Deposit down, just awaiting my insurance payout and I’ll collect hopefully in a couple of weeks. It was a lot more than I wanted to pay but I really don’t think I would have found a better condition and spec’d 981 than my Black edition so I had to purchase something that wouldn’t feel like a backwards step. Here’s to four cylinder motoring.

Great result in the end then mate :)

Looking forward to your impressions of it as a car and the pictures too, welcome to the 4 cylinder GTS club :)

looks like the perfect family car 😃👍

Works for its intended daily purpose mate they have ample space for what they are. Plenty of bigger cars around at home if I need them to.

It weird on the commute I drive it slower than my previous 330i for some reason, possibly no rush vibes I guess. ill enjoy it whilst I can, fingers crossed it stays reliable :)

  3. Pictures above mate, got there in the end :)

Very happy with it it’s cool as a daily as well, do want to swap the wheels for an 18” though the ride is firm on the 19” wheels the GTS is much smoother in comparison on its 20” wheels and the 987.2 BE was better too must be the suspension set up / lighter wheel combination.

Looks nice and guards red is a stunning colour in the flesh.

A bit lacking on extras for a GTS but looks very well priced considering, the GTS comes standard with some nice bits anyway I guess.

let us know how you get on 👍

2.5 sadly my budget won’t stretch to a 4.0. I had a 2.5 as a loaner from the OPC a year or so ago and I thought it was okay, engine didn’t sound half as good as the 981 but it went like a stabbed rat and the chassis, seats and infotainment was a big step up. We’ll see.

Enjoy it’s a great engine and the GTS add PTV which is great :)

I’m looking at a 718 GTS tomorrow too.

Very nice what spec is it? Do you have a link? If you go in with an open mind regarding the noise I think you’ll see how brilliant they are. Try it in sports mode too it sounds even better then 😉

  8. Sorry to hear this, it’s always upsetting when someone writes off your pride and joy. The main thing is you are safe.

Was it a PDK or manual mate? I’ll keep an eye out for a new replacement if you’d like

they're in the same place on either side. if you have the 5 spoke wheels as I do you can use a torch to see them. they're visible in the space between the calliper and the wheel above the steering rack. Otherwise wheel off I'm afraid

Hence check the intakes on the front for debris. The ac condensers and cooling rads are stacked on top of one another and when left as Porsche intended are a magnet for leaves, cigarette butts - you name it!

I am hoping this means it’s all been done but I’ll be sure to check.

A near complete A/C replacement carried out in 2021 including; condenser, compressor, high pressure hoses and therefore is working perfectly.

same year my Boxster! my 2.7 is the later gen engine with the larger IMS bearing which I think all Caymans got but can't be sure

    points from painful experience below

    1. Ask about Coolant cross over pipes at the front, replaced?- check if they are crusty at the joints behind the front wheels, bank on £800-1000 when they leak as you'll have to do the whole lot to be sure and it's unlikely you can simply change one pipe without damaging the others in the process.

    2. check BACK of brake disk for corrosion - if not changed recently they can corrode badly on the back

    3. Does the AC actually work! look for debris in the front intakes as the rads can/will rot unless cleaned

    4. check the exhaust for corroded bolts - just look under middle of the rear of the car you'll see them - they rot and crack and start blowing

    5. Knocks on the suspension listen for a cluncking noise at the very least! very likely drop links or ARB bushes but can need more if never changed

    6. look for any sign of oil under the engine. look under the car just in front of the rear wheels toward middle/back of the car with a torch, if there is it's likely RMS or IMS flange seal - gear box out job and can be very expensive and best to do a clutch change at the same time.

    7. Check the brake pipes for corrosion - I mean it! mine were all in bad condition and I replaced the lot!

    8. check the handbrake actually works!! people don't replace the lining and they are a cheap fix.

9 any history the water pump/belt/thermostat has been done? if not would recommend doing ASAP.

    You did ask!

fantastic car when sorted but as I was told there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche....

    Very helpful thanks mate

Brakes were done by Mortimer’s before sale and most of the AC system too but I’ll be checking it all out.

Which side of the car is best to see coolant pipes? I assume if I turn the wheel I’ll be able to see the condition of them?

Looks cosmetically nice , good to hear last owner cared.

Another suggestion, check the coolant pipes have been done.

    Good luck with the purchase.

From the invoices I do have, a coolant pipe set was fitted in May 2016 at a cost of £175, the clutch (3 piece) was replaced at the same time at 52156 miles, but there is no record of the IMS bearing being replaced. However, I'm lead to believe 2.7s rarely require this modification, due to less stress on the engine than a 3.4 per se. I do not have an invoice for a replacement of the Brake 'hard' pipes, but it does look they have been replaced on all 4 corners and are treated with ACF 50.

That was his response to coolant pipes, ill check them tomorrow as well

  12. Hi all,

I am off to see this car tomorrow and have agreed a price on it prior to going to look and it looks to tick most of my boxes.

    Below is a link.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166132661499?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=zRGVh2T6QzW&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=_Aec-WaDRW-&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I have done a report on the car and its come back ok, the only weird thing is its come back with no data prior to 2012 which I find strange.

Is it because maybe the car started its life in Ireland? Is this anything to worry about?

Any other things to note on the car?

    Thanks

    Ash

Just shows what some sellers call "full service history" Four stamps in 89,900 miles. 3 years/38000 miles, then no more until 6 years later. The paperwork may say something different but a bit off-putting at that price.

It has proper history to be fair all Porsche or specialist bar the last two.

it’s in the other pictures :)

    Plenty more out there.

Exactly, it wasn’t perfect anyway. Had it not been guards Red I don’t think I would have been interested. It wasn’t spec heavy by any means.

I have time on side too no rush :)

I may even settle for a Boxster if it was perfect!

    Missed a trick here .

If I was you I would have got myself in front of the car ASAP .Not potentially annoyed the seller with nerdy questions.

    Nerdy from his pov .

    The reason .

Hes been tossed off by a few buyers already so a “ normal guy “ rocking up with the dough assuming the cars ok = it’s yours .

Bargain hard chip him ..eye contact after a drive flash the cash etc .

You would have come home minus a hand 🤚😀.Got the car for less than asking .

I don’t have the time for games mate, I asked him to speak on the phone via video call and go over the car and paperwork and he wasn’t happy about that.

His loss, if it had checked out we would have worked out a deal I am sure but I don’t need to buy his car or play his silly games so I walked away. He already has lost my trust / insulated me and that’s enough.

I even asked if he would be around the weekend to view if the video call went well! Hey ho :)

Are you flogging the GTS or do you fancy an additional Boxster ?

GTS is staying, I don’t fully own it myself, I have a stake in the car with my old man. So I can use and enjoy it when I like and we split the running costs etc. It’s too nice to daily, I do quite a few miles as well so it will kill the value it has!

I am taking it to France next month for a wedding with the wife which will be lovely if the weather stays nice. It’s more of a weekend / trip car really.

I have a few other cars too so the cayman will be a daily for the time being. I just fancy something else and I miss the 987.2 BE to be fair should have kept it, had it of been a manual I most likely would have!

I have never had a cayman and think it would be fun to daily.
