Before installing the Aasco flywheel, I was a bit worried that the driving was converted in to a bit to radical and race car like, but not at all, car is still smooth and easy to drive, clutch feels like OEM and engine don’t stall at in traffic jam, so with Aasco unit non of this problems, now, if engine character change installing a even lighter unit I don’t know, that was you has to report us, I think is very interesting!

In February I ordered a Quaife limited diff for the 987, I was told the had non in stock and that production was estimated at June, so this will be next modification at my 987.

I will do a small regarding this as well

This days I have overhauled the cylinder heads at one of my bikes, preparing it for a nice journey long trip thorough Europe.

    Where are you going?

Sorry I forgot writing, I just have driving and enjoying the car after making this last modification!

Changing to light flywheel and sport clutch has made the car mucho funnier and exacting to drive, engine spins up much faster but what’s even more important is how it go down in rews for heel and toe down shifting, just stunning.

Have done 10.000km in less than a year since car is finished and I still have a big smile at face each time I use it!

Great. I've been thinking about the flywheel mod.  I don't need a new clutch so my justification would be that my RMS leak is getting a bit worse. I think it's called man maths. I've got this one in mind -

    https://www.atspeedracing.co.uk/products/billet-steel-flywheels/porsche/porsche-boxster-caymen-lite

Lighter than the Aasco, cheaper in the UK and designed to work with the OE clutch.

All detailed in my Running Report.

    It is still awesome.

There are further tweaks in the pipeline - think larger intake system and an “assertive” map.

That said it’s a 325bhp engine in its current config.

Thank you - went out yesterday for a pootle and was thinking the contact points are still spot on - seats, shifter and steering wheel.

Not dissing by any means but one of the things that puts me off the hartech if ever the worst happened is that 325hp just doesn't sound like a massive increase for the cost. That said I'm sure it's all about the torque rather than chasing silly pub bragging hp numbers. And the fact that the motor is now probably indestructible.

Having been through this - M96 engine builds and IMS Bearing decisions:

The "Larger" IMS Bearing (IMSB) from Porsche fits the M96 engine - it can only be installed whilst the crank case halves are separated and does not require any machining of the case halves.

So a larger IMSB in a 986 engine is a rebuilt or replacement engine when it comes to a 986 - as outlined in @edc's comment above.

My 986 3.7 M96 build had the larger Porsche IMSB and a new IMS installed - the only machining on that engine was to facilitate the 100mm piston bores. Nothing else was altered.

In my case the Porsche Larger IMSB was considered to be a known quantity in terms of reliability - the aftermarket options all carry a range of warranty exclusions and "service life" definitions that make me uncomfortable.

In terms of machining to fit alternative or larger bearings - I remember this:

I didn't know you'd done a 3.7 conversion - or did you buy it already done? And of course was it awesome? 😎

Just head back from Performance Porsche Klassiker and the engine has eaten itself.. they took the oil filter out and it com full of metal and said the rods and internals are all shot. How much investigation they went into im not sure but said its its not repairable and will need a replacement engine.

So now to try and find an alternate.

    @danb Appreciate that link mate.

Guessing it was IMS then. Spun rod bearing wouldn't do that much damage. Daresay pistons hit valves etc. 😞 So these places that fit you a recon motor for 3k expect an undamaged engine back in return. Presemably if you don't have that the price goes up considerably.

There is also a couple of companies in the UK that has completed the LS swap too, although IIRC it was a Cayman they did it in.

think one was Driftworks, can't remember the other

Now you're talking. Torqueing. Whatever. One of those things that's so wrong it's right. I wonder how the price compares? Over here LS motors are a lot scarcer of course.

  7. I've just changed my mind about that 718 4.0 that I couldn't afford. Take that Porsche....

I wouldn't want a PDK anyway and there's the 10k bill if it goes south but now there's an 8.5k bill because the manual isn't up to snuff. Do they do any other gearboxes?

i can't see anything out the ordinary on any of pad wear, increased dust or one wheel getting hotter than the others, so... and as i say, brakes work fine at the moment, so not gonna worry about it at the moment!

Yep. Plenty of time to worry at the bottom of craners..... Actually I don't think I've visited that particular gravel trap. Been in the one at redgate. 🙄

That’s a shame about the thread as I followed Bertys thread when I fitted mine.

Did you find out if you need bigger couplers or stretch your original ones, I really can’t remember. I’ve got a feeling I stretched the original ones as in Bertys thread I’m sure he used the 3.4 ones but used some tape on the one end as it was too big and I don’t remember messing with tape.

I'm away at the minute so I haven't compared the two but I'm pretty sure I've read that you can soften the rubbers in hot water and  stretch them on with a bit of cussing. No it's not a situation I regularly encounter before anyone makes a fnaarr! comment.

Other than that I'm hoping it's a `remove old item replace with new item` sort of job. Everyone seemed to be pleased with the result. I'm not expecting a miracle and I had sort of talked myself out of doing it but then the tee with the tb attached popped up on ebay cheap so I thought what the heck. Removing restrictions is a good thing right?

On a related issue blocking off the hole to the helmholz chamber in the airbox is said to give an intake noise boost. From the diags I've seen I can't find it but I guess I'll stumble on it when I pull it apart.

The 987 3.2  upgrade is to use the 3.4 inlet plenum TEE from a Cayman or a boxster of model year 2006 onwards. . unfortunately the item has ended in auction , i did post the part numbers in the upgrades section some years ago , I don't recall them off the top of my head i'm afraid.  The original listing looks like the right part and includes the throttle body as well. The lower foot on the bracket is broken but that doesn't matter on the 3.2 upgrade because it won't mount onto the 3.2 engine its designed for the 3.4. Most people cut it off anyway.

Thanks for the advice. It's ended because I bought it so lets hope you're right - pretty sure you are. Gareth @Lonewolfgjp 👍 thinks the same as you.

BTW I looked for your thread on doing this job on Rennlist and all I could get was a dead link. Maybe it's been archived.

I'll get some. I'm happy with the sound of my car but would like less of it in the cabin.

I also did the engine inspection covers and the rest of the bulkhead. Actually the covers prob made the most difference.

….stuck some sound deadening stuff under the boot lid to cut the resonance of the DesignTek exhaust (which booms terribly).  Has had a positive effect, much less  intrusive.  Boot acts like a huge Bass Cab,  not now….

I also lifted the carpets and did the boot floor.  Made a nice difference and I had some left over so I did under the bonnet which surprisingly also helped. I guess it's another resonant space - probably amplifying front tyre noise.  Doors next. Strangely the exhaust sounds better. Getting rid of other noises I suppose.

  13. Yeah I will. In Spain right now though. Have to say the place DH sent me to looked a proper dump inside and out but they were doing full restos on an E type and a 911 turbo. Don't care to contribute towards expensive premises....

But Dove House do also deal with Maserati, Ferrari and classic 911 customers to whom that is a reasonable figure.

Not useful to OP, but @Ninesomething go see Tim and Paint FX just of Stamford Road behind Kwik Fit if you still need it done locally.  Bonnet, bumper and wing respray on The Much Better ½'s Golf with some minor repairs, £880 incl VAT earlier this year, turned round in a week.  He's done both my 986 bumpers for under £300 incl VAT each in the last 4 years but I did take them to him stripped off the car and of all accessories ready for them to prep.

The guy at DH knows what my car is and he told me they'd done loads of Boxster front bumpers for them. Can't believe they can spend that sort of money on a car they're going to retail.

Anyway thanks for the tip - I take it you were happy with the job?
