  1. welcome along! how many miles has your new purchase done?

theres a good argument for leaving the IMS well alone on a 20 year old car, if it was going to break, it would have done so about 15 years ago. a 20 year old car that is used properly with regular oil changes is unlikely to have any problems.

  2. Do auto wipers actually work on a porsche? Theyre infuriating on my old bmw, super slow to react even on the most sensitive setting. I'd much rather have a proper adjustable intermittent wipe.

Completed fitting my Toyosport exhaust using cleaned up cats and a set of stainless Toyosport exhaust headers.

Also fitted an under drive fully, one new, (used ) handbrake cable, cleaned up inside of handbrake assembly and fitted rear discs. Repaired a few electrical connectors to the cats plus fiddled about underneath!

And whats the verdict? Toyosports are like marmite, you either love it or hate it...

  4. a second of low oil pressure is a long time for an engine - the crankshaft will have rotated over 100 times... you might be lucky, you might not.

i've grenaded two engines due to a total lack of oil, so... i'm fairly cautious now, always check the level is near max. but in my 10 years of doing trackdays, i've never seen low oil pressure due to oil surge. i was aware of boxsters potentially having problems round long left handers, but fortunately most UK circuits run clockwise - bedford is an exception, but most of the left hand corners there are tight hairpins. about the only place i can think of which had a long left hander was gracelands corner at rockingham, but thats no longer a trackday venue. maybe cascades at oulton park.

  5. yeah its either a sports cat on the manifold, or a complete decat manifold, and/or a sports back box.

on my 987, i'm going to leave the standard manifolds with cats as they are, and just change the back box for a topgear exhaust - which will remove the secondary cats.

Following on from some comments in the 986 thread, I went out for a short blast to try some heel and toe (never done it before).

Almost went into the back of someone, sounded like a learner driver with the engine revving all over the place and my ankle is killing me - so went well 🤪

    Lots more practice needed...

hmmmm thought about how i learnt heel and toe, but... i cant remember! however - its well worth persevering with, as heel and toe downshifts are really the sole reason why i drive manual cars on track - executing a perfect heel and tow downshift is soo satisfying, its like engaging hero mode.

and on a nice country road, i often find myself unnecessarily going from 3rd to 4th, just so i can heel and toe back down to third again. i do find it easier with a firmer stamp on the brake pedal, doesnt really work that well if you're only lightly on the brake, difficult to maintain a consistent push on the brake while you blip the throttle if your pressure on the brake is light.

i'm pretty sure you can practice the motions while stationary, with the engine off. you wont hear the throttle blip, but you'll get a feel for the throttle pedal. also, its not necessarily heel on gas, toe on brake - it can just be left side of foot on brake, right side of foot on gas. varies depending on the relative position of the pedals and what feels comfortable to you.

Thanks, I have just bought a car with the designtek exhaust on it but am not sure about the sound. It’s pretty loud.

I’m thinking maybe I should return it to standard.

if you do take it off i'll have it off you for my 987.1...

  8. guessing you're looking at ebay's finest dronemaster exhaust, currently available new for just £169...

    discussed at length here too:

i ran just the back box on my 986S and was fine for noise at Bedford, Snetterton, Donington and Anglesey - think it tested at 89db static, something like that.

i was going to get the stainless manifolds as well as they look so darn gorgeous, but my garaged advised that getting the old manifolds off would be a right pig of a job, so in the end i just went for the backbox.

personally, for a track car, i'd say its a no brainer. the system is insanely cheap, a lot lighter than the standard exhaust and sounds glorious at high rpm. you just have to put up with a bit of drone while driving to the track, but its easy enough to drive around it.

  9. Attempted an alignment... except all the rear alignment bolts are seized solid. Sooo... cars are supposed to be toeing out at the rear, right?

Will get my friendly indy to free up seized bolts and replace subsequent coffin arms/ track control arms as required in a bit.

But right now, daily needs new tyres, so thats happening first!

  10. renewals are always massively inflated, in the hopes that people will just accept them. you always have to go on comparison sites. Every single year

i think in my 15 years of driving so far, i have changed insurer every year - sometimes i'll go back to previous insurers (I've had 4 previous policies with esure, for example) but i have never stuck with an insurer for more than a year. currently my daily is now insured with M&S bank. who i didnt even know did insurance until they popped up on a price comparison site.

loyalty in car insurance means absolutely diddly squat.

same as car breakdown recovery actually, i remember a story a few years back of some old dear who was paying like, £500 a year for RAC cover because she had just auto renewed with them for about 15 years straight.

  11. Yeah im not really sure factory extras add a great deal to a 19 year old car... its the big ticket items like mileage and service history that make a car a good buy. Plus, theres a heck of a lot of competition, and to be honest, i normally start with the cheapest cars that fullfil my brief when buying.
