  1. Option IV2 includes all those things (Connect+, CarPlay, SIM card slot, and the USB in the centre compartment).

You would have to update the map data with an SD card.  However, the free SD updates are restricted to (IIRC) 3 years from new.  There is a way to 'hack' the system to update the maps and add CarPlay, but you need reasonable computer skills.  PM me if you want details, but you can try the dealer route first, as CarPlay is retrofittable with an official Porsche kit.

I think there is some subtleties in the options that were spec’ed.  connect and Connect plus come to mind.  Connect gives you CarPlay , connect plus online services - but I may have that wrong - since my I C E is steam driven.

There are 3rd party routes to “stuff” - see this post

@Richard Hamilton anything on “can do CarPlay” vs “can be made to do CarPlay” ?

Carplay is a separate option to Connect/+.

I think what Malcolm E Box was hinting at is that it isn't wireless Carplay. You need to connect the phone to the USB port in the armrest cubby. Or get a wireless adapter and plug it in there, like I did.

  3. From the 981 Service Technik:

The Auto Start Stop button (1) switches the Auto Start Stop function on and off and activates and deactivates coasting mode. When the system is switched off, the indicator light in the button lights up red.

    Prerequisites for coasting mode:
    • Driving with selector lever in position D
    • Coasting mode activated (indicator light in the button [1] off)
    • Sport or Sport Plus mode deactivated
    • PSM active
    • Control cruise mode not active
    • Engine, transmission and battery have reached operating temperature
    • Relaxed/economic driving style
    • Slight uphill or downhill gradient
    • Remove foot slowly from accelerator pedal

From the description of PSM9.0 in the Technik:
The new standstill management function (Auto-hold function) prevents the vehicle from rolling back in the opposite direction to the desired driving direction. If the vehicle is braked to a stop on a gradient, the Auto-hold function is active and the required brake pressure is maintained via PSM. On vehicles with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), the Auto-hold function also holds the vehicle if the driver allows the vehicle to coast to a stop on a gradient. As soon as the vehicle comes to a stop without braking, the brake pressure is maintained via PSM for holding the vehicle on the gradient until it moves off again. The hold function is transferred to the electric parking brake after 5 minutes or if the system detects that the driver intends to leave the vehicle.

So it would seem like auto-hold would be standard on the 981.  I know that with my 982 I have to give the pedal a bit more pressure after I have come to a stop for it to engage.

Someone just sent me this link, which seems like a relatively reasonable solution for updating the maps:

I see the disclaimer about the about the zoom bug is gone, wonder has it been fixed.

I know someone who did it last week on his 981 with 3.43 software, using those maps, and has the zoom issue.

I think they encode the cars VIN and and some software key into the USB that allows the maps to load. They have to buy the sw key from Porsche, that’s why they can’t just ship these out at £20 or £30.  This would imply that the PCM software version can be updated just with the DVD and no sw key? Certainly looks like that to me.

I doubt very much they buy the software key from Porsche.  Porsche charge about £118+VAT for the code.  I suspect they have their own key generator, or have an arrangement with the Lithuanian/Russian code providers.  The map disks themselves are relatively cheap at £42+VAT, so may well be genuine.

I think the USB stick contains a script which enters the Activation Code for the new maps into the PCM in place of doing it with PIWIS.  I suspect that if you don't enter the code, the maps won't load.

  6. This is the PCM3.x version history:

    Hardware versions:

PCM 3.0 was launched in 2009 for Sports-cars and Cayenne.
During 2011 MY, version 2 was released for Sports-cars with improvements in mapping, navigation, and internal hardware.

PCM 3.1 was launched in 2010 for Panamera including new features such as a new display, 3D Navigation, mapping in the Instrument Cluster, Bluetooth® Audio streaming, and the Burmester Surround Sound system.
During 2010 MY, version 2 was released for Panamera including a revised iPod® / Multimedia interface.
During 2012 MY, version 3 was released for all variants including improved hardware, Start Screen support, and HD Radio®.
During 2013 MY, version 4 was released for all variants including new features such as Aha Radio (Online Services), Jukebox, and Email / Text.

    Software Versions:

    PCM 3.0 Software Level 1.X - Hardware Version 1 - 2009-2011
    PCM 3.0 Software Level 2.X - Hardware Version 2 - 2011-2013
    PCM 3.1 Software Level 1.X - Hardware Version 1 - 2010
    PCM 3.1 Software Level 2.X - Hardware Version 2 - 2010-2012
    PCM 3.1 Software Level 3.X - Hardware Version 3 - 2012-2013
    PCM 3.1 Software Level 4.X - Hardware Version 4 - 2013-

That was taken from a Porsche bulletin.  However, I have never seen a PCM3.0 with software version 1.x in a sports car.  All those I have seen are V2.x.  I have seen V1.x in a Cayenne though.

I am also thinking of this upgrade, just checked my PCM 3.1 system V3.4 so, am I right in thinking, don't change as I will have the problem with zooming the map.

V3.x is the 1st Gen PCM3.1, and you are very likely to have the zoom issue.

  8. I haven't ever had a problem by connecting a decent size charger direct to the battery, switching on the ignition, and running the update.  That's what the technical bulletin says to do, and it has always worked for me.  Various devices on the car shut down after random periods, but the PCM stays active while the maps are loading.

  9. Very odd.  The parts catalogue shows the same switch part number for the Cayman.  Unfortunately, the 981 manual I have is an early one, and doesn't have supplements.  I can't see anything in the technical bulletins I have.

Having said that, I looked at the 718 parts lists, an it doesn't show a switch on the diagram for the pedal.  Trouble is, I can't find anything on the master cylinder or servo either.  Bit of a mystery.  I'll keep looking, but don't wait for me......

From what's been said, and the fault codes above, I think it is unlikely to be the brake light switch anyway.  I think you need to do some more checks.

  10. The "2022" map update has been out since January.  Beware PCM3.0 users and PCM3.1 users with firmware version 3.xx - there is an issue when zooming the view above 1.5km.  The map display disappears.

  11. One of my pet hates is people fitting an aftermarket stereo and not getting the factory unit coded out of the system.  The times I've had trying to diagnose faults for people and had to spend half an hour re-coding before I can start.....

  12. The green and white wire does connect the relay to the DME (the engine ECU) which is behind the carpet lining on the front wall of the rear compartment.  It goes via a black 30-pin connector, so it might be worth unplugging that, and give it a spray of contact cleaner.

Anyone local able to help code the windows to go up with the lock? I am in Wycombe.

I'm confused.  The original post says they won't drop when closing the door.  The window drop isn't an option you can code.

If you mean "comfort closing" (press and hold the lock button on the remote to close the windows), then yes, I can do that for you.  Drop me a PM and we'll take it from there.

  14. It could be what Paul said, but it also sounds like it could be stretched cables in the window regulator.  Put the window half way down, and grab hold of the top of it.  See if you can move it up and down.  if it moves more than a couple of millimetres, the regulator is the problem.
