  1. Looks like their are 3 whites for the 981:

    White - C9A
    Carrara White - B9A
    Carrara White Metallic - S9R

Full list here: <981 Paint Colours>

Carrara is named after the white Carrara marble from Italy.  Nothing to do with the Carrera Panamerica, after which many Porsche models are named.

  2. Neither smack of the truth to me.  A "tap from the rear" doesn't produce a Cat S.  And a lack of parts during a repair does not cause structural damage either.

I bought mine as a Cat N, and had the repairs done, but have some good photographs during the repairs, and it still amazes me that the car was written off.  I am also realistic about the value reduction, and think 1/3 off retail is about right.

  3. What they have done is to connect the speaker outputs from the Alpine unit to the amplifier inputs on the car.  It must have sounded dreadful.  Hopefully it hasn't damaged anything.

  4. It is.most likely the the wake up line for the amp isn't connected. Drop me a PM with your email address, and I'll sent you the wiring diagram in the morning when I get to my PC.

  5. With the correct wiring connections, and the right software, there should be no problem with retrofitting OBC and/or CC to any 986 with DME 7.2 or 7.8 (ie. e-Gas) - any age.

I have no experience with Durametric, but I believe it can be flaky activating CC.  Piwis2 and Piwis 3 aren't much better - the CC activation option was removed from later versions of the software.  PST2 or PIWIS1 are what you need, and work perfectly.  The reason being that the software was written by Bosch, who made the control units, and is totally compatible.

  6. Aha!  There is a blade on the end of the key barrel which engages in the lock mechanism.  It is very easy to assemble it without getting the blade in the slot.

As has been said, opening front or rear compartments with the cable release will set of the alarm, and it won't get it out of sleep mode, so the remote still won't work.  I would try making the call to the AA......

The frunk release is a bowden cable and is on the offside on UK cars

It depends on if the releases are mechanical or electric. Electric releases have the cable on the right side. Mechanical releases have the cable on the left.

I guess that is maybe because the cluster has a low res screen in a non nav 718. Weirdly there are 3 settings for displaying pcm maps on the cluster in piwis but there appears to be no difference sadly.

I could of course buy a 718 with nav cluster and perhaps transplant the screen....

    But I'm going too far now aren't I 🤣

Looking at PET, There are only 4 things that determine the cluster type on a 982:
    Model: Base/S/GTS
    Transmission: Manual/PDK
    Dial Colour: Black/Silver/Red, etc
    Country: GB/RoW

No mention of with/without navigation.  Same applies to the 981 clusters.  It makes me think that it is a coding or programming issue.  I don't suppose dealers are allowed, or have access to developer mode, to flash control modules to change the spec (when retrofitting navigation).  They would only do programming for like-for-like control unit replacement.

Having said that, if your 981 had PCM3.1 with navigation, I would expect the instrument cluster to be programmed to display the map.  I'm not aware of a different resolution between 981 and 982, only that the 982 MF display has some additional functions.

  9. I don't think you'll be able to get the map display in the instrument cluster.  The retrofit instructions for PCM4 in a 718 shows these limitations:

Limitations of the subsequent installation of the Navigation system including voice control:
    • No navigation maps displayed in the multi-function display (instrument cluster)
    • No Real-time Traffic Information (RTTI)

There, that's thrown down the gauntlet.......

  10. @Paul P  I wonder if you could engineer a 982 TPMS to fit?  There are no sender units in the wheel arches, and the sensors talk directly to the control unit.  (The CU is about £100 new).  The only connections to the CU are power and CAN low/high.  Might be worth investigating.

  11. Found it!  This is for the 987.

    Engine Compartment Blower

The engine compartment scavenging blower draws cooling air into the engine compartment through the opening on the right hand side (direction of travel). The engine compartment scavenging blower is switched on and off at the following temperatures:

    Engine compartment temperature: ON at > 158° F. (70° C),
    OFF at < 131° F. (55° C).

    Coolant temperature: ON at > 216° F. (102° C),
    OFF at < 210° F. (99° C).

It can also be activated at high intake air temperatures / ambient temperatures.

  12. I haven't come across the figure for the 987, but here are the conditions for the 996 fan, which I expect would be similar:

Switch-on conditions for engine compartment fan:

The engine compartment fan is switched on when the engine compartment temperature is >80°C
    or
    the coolant temperature is >102°C.

    After-running of engine compartment fan:

If the ignition is switched off and the engine compartment temperature is more than 60°C, the DME control module remains in readiness for another 20 minutes. During this time, the engine compartment temperature is retrieved every 10 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is >85°C, the engine compartment fan is switched on for 20 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is still  >85°C after this time, the fan remains on for a further 30 seconds.

    Re the battery.

I think the process is turn on ignition to pos 1 (on but not running) then off and leave the key in - that stops tbe backup siren going off.

    @Richard Hamilton what’s the situation with a CD-R 23 for radio code ?

No need to enter a code on the CDR23.  Codes are stored in the radio and DME. When you turn on the ignition, the radio will fire up if the codes match.

I think the maps are available freely, but the issue is the PCM is locked, so you can only load paid for mapping,

the PCM can be flashed to unlock it and then you can update the mapping FOC.

i used sima via WhatsApp and Wi-Fi to activate CarPlay and unlock the PCM / update teh mapping to 2022

You can do all that yourself, with just a bit of know how and a couple of SD cards.  The thread @Paul P  linked to has a description, and I have made PDF instructions for anyome who PMs me.

By the way, the latest maps are version 0197 - 2022/2023.
