Hi Graham. That was a link to a Facebook 986 owners UK general Page. Were you trying to send me something specific?
RalphyBMW
Saturday morning got the car on stands, wheels off to be powder coated, front arch liners out, bumper off, radiator supports both out and stripped down, dropped those and the wheels at the powder coaters along with some M030 ARBs. Ordered a new radiator and the other bits that are past their best. Cleaned everything up that came off the car. Made a bit of progress on a long rubber caliper rebuild project, rears all built up, pistons ordered for the fronts. Going to replace the short rigid pipes and fit some braided flexi hoses.

phazed
According to JMG, a secondhand one will have to be checked over, coded, key changed and a few other bits and pieces which will amount to several hundred pounds to do the job properly. Alternatively, I have had a quote from them to supply a refurbished unit and supply a new key coded to the unit. A tad under £1500! What a nightmare. You can see how a car with this problem plus a handful of other defects/problems is basically worth nothing. I guess that’s why several are being broken. I am in a slight state of depression and if I had a cat, would probably kick it! 🤨
½cwt
Unfortunately it is how a car that cost north of £30k 20 years ago drops to a tenth of that, when a bit of smarter fore thought during the development of the car would not have put a control module exactly where water would gather were a convertible roof to leak. It happened again on the 987, they moved the alarm module to somewhere else where it won't get wet. Then some bright spark packaging engineer found a space for the rear control module. Where I hear you ask? Under the left hand seat where of course it also now gets wet if the car leaks. Fortunately a bit cheaper to fix though.

The figure I used to quote, based on what I saw here over the years, was 600 quid ballpark. No idea if that's changed in recent years (age, covid, etc.)

May be a good case for the 15% off on OPC fitted parts with Porsche Classic membership! Not cheap either way. I dodged a bullet on this myself. There are signs of water damage in my alarm module but the only faulty circuit was for the interior light. With help from Richard Hamilton and lots of studying wiring diagrams I traced it back to the alarm module where I found the water damage but by rigging a bypass for that one particular circuit I solved the problem, thankfully. A thorough clean to remove excess corrosion, lots of contact cleaner and it has been fine for over 4 years now.
phazed
I think I am going to have to go with it. I’m just dreading them saying it’s gonna take another four weeks or so.!
TROOPER88
If you’d like to get the car recovered to me, I’ll sort. I seem to recall speaking on the phone with you circa 2 months ago regarding your roof not operating. Recovery to me and I’ll sort the ACU and the roof. 3

After several months of renewing about 3K worth of parts, repairing loads of stuff, shot blasting, powder coating and painting lots of underfloor stuff that can be unbolted and a plethora of other things, all I have to do now is bleed the brakes and wait for my immobilizer, then I can start the car. My pessimistic side feels this might be several weeks yet, (hopefully before the Gazza thing is sorted out!) but I’m trying to stay positive. Check out a guy called Boyd Beattie on Facebook. He does this sort of thing all the time and as I remember he's not very expensive. (I forget what he calls his business - "Pixels Fixed"? phazed
Washed the car while it is on the 2 post lift. May have the immobiliser problems sorted by the end week, fingers crossed. Need to replace carpet, seats, centre console and bleed brakes.. Plan is all complete by Monday… Aledgedly!
RedBarediver
I ordered all the service parts from Design911 on the 31st of Jan. They didn't have the oil filter in stock so gave me the option of getting the rest of the stuff in one delivery, and then the oil filter when it arrives. I decided to wait for the filter so it can all be shipped in one go (saves on delivery charges). The oil filter arrived on the 1st or something and they shipped the whole lot out on the 2nd. Great stuff, I thought. That means I can spend an enjoyable Saturday this weekend to do the service and in general play around with the little car. Unfortunately, they ship with DHL. SInce the 2nd of Feb the package has been sitting in their Stansted hub and has not moved. Even the parts I ordered from Autodoc arrived quicker - and that came all the way from Germany... In all honesty, I am tired of ordering stuff from D911 - for precisely this reason. Sometimes it is very fast but mostly DHL is a gamble as to whether the stuff arrives on time, at the right place, or in some instances...at all! Next time I'll just go directly to Mid-Sussex Porsche and get the Porsche stuff from them. At least then I won't have to wait and wait and wait... phazed
That is unfortunate. I have had several packages from D911 and they all arrived the next day. Very pleased with their service but then I haven’t been let down!

I think there's been one or two occasions where I bought something from them and then saw it a bit cheaper the next day on D911 (usually with a code or something, but still). Usually, I buy from D911 because I don't have the time or the inclination to drive 5 or 6 miles to go get it myself. Pure laziness.
TV8
I took the car for its first MOT on my ownership yesterday and all advisories sorted and the cars looks quite tidy underneath as well apart from the manifold bolts. I have managed a couple of thousand miles in it and have to say, quite like the car! The colour is not the best to keep clean, especially since I took our water softener out of service as you need to dry it down quickly to avoid water marks. A local body shop tidied up the rear bumper and very pleased with how it looks now. Also, I found some spray wax in a kit that VW supplied with my daily and I might be a convert to it when I see how it works when the air temperature is a bit hotter. Spray the wax on the car when it’s wet and then micro fibre the car dry a couple of panels at a time then buff the whole car with a clean cloth when finished. Doesn’t take that long and certainly pops, helped by the fact that I clawed and polished the car last year.

Don't forget their default pages do not show VAT, but yes, a code will help. Rule of thumb their ex VAT price is roughly Porsche's price incl VAT and a 10% discount applied, which most OPC part department will give.

½cwt
To be fair to the Porsche parts specialists like D911, T911, Frazerpart etc. for non-Porsche branded parts they are competitive and are particularly useful where the OE supplier to Porsche is known and they stock that supplier's parts. It is the Porsche specific parts that are cheapest (or should I say lowest priced) from an OPC.
