Patrick Bateman
After a few years of dealing with rusty BMW's I thought I was safe with a 987 but alas, not to be! Is it not practically unheard of? Just noticed this in the offside rear arch- Granted it's 12 years old but I was hoping to escape the dreaded stuff. Boxob
I've not read any reports of wheel arch rust, save for gravel rash low down. Could it be a poorly repaired scrape?
Patrick Bateman
No idea.
Daniel Joseph
1 hour ago, Boxob said: Could it be a poorly repaired scrape? Highly likely, I would think, especially if it's just one wheelarch. I don't recall any reports of corrosion on here, even on much older 986 models.
Patrick Bateman
Hopefully it's isolated then. Just finding a decent bodyshop is a pain.
Batesy66
I have a small patch in exactly the same position on the whelel arch but on the near side front.
B3NNL
Not on mine, but when I was test driving a white Cayman, it had visible rust bubbling at the rear of both front arches, quite substantial rust at that which was surprising for a 2009 car. See this alot, from gravel rash where it hasn't been treated.

Patrick Bateman
Bodyshop I was at for a quote said he's seen a few Porsches (although not sure if he meant 996/986) due to the lip on the rear arch that accumulates cr*p.
Jasonb
Hi all just joined up after buying a 2007 987 and yes it has a rust developing to the left of the bonnet badge and a little underneath around the bonnet catch. Thinking of having the front painted to get rid of a few minor stone chips and eliminate the rust as impart from that it's in excellent condition and drives superb. Patrick Bateman
I had this treated a few months ago and it's just starting to come back again already. The bodyshop commented at the time that there appeared to be a previously poor repair job here. Is there a cost effective way to get a rear quarter panel welded in place or am I p*ssing into the wind? Properly feked off, I left e39 ownership to get away from rust and I like the car a lot. A proper rust repair ought not be reappearing in a few months!
Patrick Bateman
Might end up selling in spring and getting a Z4.

I will go back of course and see what they say though.
Tim_
My My09 987 had some top surface rust at the bottom inside edge (nearest the door) of the front wheel arches. I think this was gravel rash and stone chips. I treated it and painted it and has been fine. I think the only proper 987/997 corrosion would be from shoddy accident repair or gravel rash that has not been dealt with promptly.

I'd be very annoyed too but any car I have driven since owning a Porsche juat has felt disconnected from the wheels and tarmac and I realised I could not live without one in my life! I know BMW have some great cars but in my opinion a Z4 does not meet the mark the equivalent Boxster/Cayman set. I wonder if there is a paint/repair specialist who could assess your 987 and advise you for a small fee? I would defo go back to your original body shop for an explanation. Check their website for the warranty period and also take the original paint repair invoice with you. Good luck!
Jason986S
The Boxster V's Z4 debate can re-open, but I currently have both on my drive and the BMW (2003) isn't a patch on the Porsche (2001) as a drivers car.
Patrick Bateman
The guy was fine to deal with but there's never a guarantee with rust repairs unless you've had a new panel welded in. I've used 3 different, highly regarded bodyshops in the past 5 years and it's always the same unless you're putting in new metal. If it's from the inside out it's always going to come back sadly. Shifts at work stopping and now down about £450 a month doesn't help.

Granted, a scape back, treat and paint should last a bit longer then a few months, but I lost count of the number of times I did this type of repair on my MX-5's only for the bubbling to be back again in 6 months or so time, which is one of the main reasons I bought the Boxster, so you have my sympathy @Patrick Bateman
mwmackenzie
Front of sill and rear of front arch on mine has a bit wither stone chips over the years have taken the paint off, it has been repaired previously but not very well by the looks of it so its on my to do list
Patrick Bateman
Went back to the bodyshop and more or less told tough shyate as expected. Would have hoped for more than a few months though. So my options are realistically sell it or get a new panel put in. I'll likely use some Bilthamber wax to attempt to slow it down somewhat and sell next year, given what it's likely to cost for a new panel. Patrick Bateman
Seems a new panel at Porsche Aberdeen would be £1219 but the very helpful chap on the phone managed to get £986 with a discount. Still a lot of money + labour.
