Retro fitting sports exhaust and PSE

I always think the declaring of extras is a touchy subject. Defiantly yes on performance products. On new cars i never say its got optional extras and when ive bought a second hand car before how do i know what was an extra like alloys etc? Unless you know your cars inside and out , would know what was an option?  I think it is best to fit original extras.

That does sound lovely :)

I declared my Carnewal to Admiral and I think they charged £35.  Mind you, that seems like their standard adjustment as they charged the same when I upped my mileage to 11k from 8k!  My premium went down on renewal substantially as I transferred to a UK licence so not sure what effect it's had on the premium.

Standard Admiral admin fee for any policy change is about £20 I believe. So actual cost increase is minimal!

You should be careful admiral specifically ask the question and can invalidate your insurance if you don't tell them. I reeled of all the options for my cars and they recorded some but not others but none affected the premium as they were factory fit. Better to be upfront then have to work it out during a claim.

If you bought a secondhand car how would know what were extra's if you didn't know the original spec of the car and didn't really know your cars.

I think there is a rule which says you must have been as honest as possible and not withhold any information. 

In today's age most adverts include the optional extras on the car so it is hard to deny it isn't easy for the general consumer to find this information.

From what I have read most insurance companies won't increase a premium for optional extras from a manufacturer, so the question you need to ask yourself is do you want to take the risk?

Personally the last thing I would want when trying to make a claim would be arguing if my car had one option or another and then reducing my payout.

Yes agreed to be honest as possible but where do you draw the line at the declaring? In theory not declaring you have folding mirrors as an option, would they avoid paying out for that?

One of my cars had a premium pack on it which gave around 12 optional extras , when tapping in the reg for insurance came back as the car with the premium pack so it knew what extras were fitted.

IMO there is no line to draw. If you know it is an optional extra tell the insurance company they can decide if it is relevant to them underwriting the policy or not. I also reeled off about 30 options on my BMW they noted some not others but that is there decision. Insurance companies will do anything possible to reduce the payout this just give them one less avenue.

My insurance says the car has 'no modifications' I asked the question what is deemed a modification. The answer was that any factory fitted option does not count as a modification and they weren't interested in my cars options list (this is LV).

A carnwell exhaust mod I assume would be deemed a mod so in theory should be declared.

I had PSE fitted recently at dealer - just over £2k fitted. Ticked the box marked "replacement exhaust - cosmetic only" rather than "cosmetic and performance" on insurance and hard to tell as I was renewing at the time, but didn't seem to make any difference to premium. 

Sound is superb... and keeping the car "original" with Porsche parts was worth it for me

But in this case if you are fitting a standard Porsche factory fit PSE then I can't see how this should need to be declared as it's no different than if it was made this way, and how would they know?

The assumption I worked on was if you key my registration number into any system e.g. DVLA, it will bring up the factory specification and not show the exhaust as fitted. There is no official record that my car has this - just my invoice from the dealer.

In theory if the car is a total loss, the insurance company could deny all knowledge of it ever being fitted and only put be back in the position I was before the loss i.e. a Boxster with no PSE. As I've declared it, they would now have to replace like for like with a PSE fitted. 

Always taken the view that anything. fitted by the dealer several years after manufacture is technically a mod. My wifes last car (John Cooper Works Mini) had JCW Recaro seats fitted by dealer - again an official Mini upgrade but not recorded anywhere as not fitted at factory/first registration. They were worth over £2k from memory and never seen another Mini with them fitted - so declared them too

Is that using an existing button in the car instead of a key fob like many of the aftermarket valve systems Jimmy?  Sounds good.

The old man has the Recaro seats fitted in his JCWS from the factory, I've never seen another with them either!.

Not exhaust related, so straying from the topic; when I insured my car it was via a computer form. I think many policies in Portugal just won't insure optional extras worth more than 10-15% of the price of the car. So by the time I'd ticked satnav, PSE and a couple of other bigger ones, it wouldn't accept/acknowledge any more.

Just been on the Revolution web site, and see they are offering Carnewall exhausts, although not quoting prices, anyone know what the costs are for a 981 that's if they do 981s as I couldn't find any reference to them!
