antjrice
A pretty accurate write up for your viewing pleasure........(as far as I can tell not having owned one.....so far.....) http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/buying-guide/162011/used-porsche-boxster-buying-guide-2005-2012-mk2

entdgc
The article says... "Although a few of the earliest 2.7-litre models had a five-speed gearbox, most manual 987 Boxsters have six gears." Is this true? My 2008 is five speed and the only six speeds I have seen are S models? Perhaps I need to get out more! Dave
Lonewolfgjp
I think the six speed was an option later on and maybe standard on the 2.7 Sports edition, i think....
Bravestarr
Another point that is a bit contentious is about the standard seats being great. They are ok but in truth not great for spirited driving.
Lonewolfgjp
I don't struggle with mine, far superior to my 986 sports seats! But the optional sports seats do look nice ?

I wasn't sure either, but the sports seats have a got a 'wingback' and more pronounced side bolster..... If you type it into google you'll see the difference https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=boxster+987+standard+seats+vs+sports+seats%3F&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiH8qLzpPDYAhVIIsAKHX0wC1sQ_AUICigB&biw=1920&bih=896#imgrc=ViYGkWQvEnQn7M:

Pullingteeth
My 2.7 has 6 speeds, came as an option with anther 3 letter acronym like pms. not sport edition , but a rare option I think
Pinewood
A great buying guide, but left a little perplexed. Should i go for a early 987 (2005 ish) for circa £10k and have the clutch and AMS bearing replaced immediately (otherwise i will be paranoid about engine failure) so factor in another 2k or go for a 987 .2 (2009) with the 2.9 engine (circa £17k) as there are neglible recorded failures of the seal , and it will sell easily if/when i decide to change. BoxsterSPete
I've just bought an 05 987 S. I'm getting a sample of engine oil run through a specialist lab to Check for bearing wear/rubber particles that could come from a developing IMS issue. Hopefully all will be ok. This proactive approach could save you your 2k£! This practice is used in industry for high value assets and it's well proven. Pete

If you've got the cash, I reckon going for the 2.9 is a no brainer as you'll get a car four years younger with less maintenance required. As you say, it will be much easier to resell if you buy a good one and maintain it well. Spending £2k on the IMS/clutch on a 2005 model is money you are not going to get back when you sell it on. Menoporsche
2.9 is a 10-year newer designed engine; remember the IMS was a hangover from air-cooled days (or spark plugs, forgot which). You also get PCM3, way better than PCM2, LED lights, and the option of the beloved PDK.
