Malicious and sloppy MOT tester!

Last week put my 2002 986 in for Mot in a garage I hadn't used before but was recommended in a local neighbourhood forum.

They TORE into it, abot 10 fail points including;

Perished rear anti roll rubbers (they were 6 months old fitted by Porsche specialist)

Rear CV joint boots allowing ingress of dirt (again - all boots 6 months old and fitted by Porsche specialist)

Plus

"Helpful" advisories like "Chip in windscreen not affecting drivers vision" ..it was not only microscopic but waay to the left of the passengers side

All 4 shocks showing signs of corrosion - Mud is what they meant - cleaned mud off and good as new

The only two points that were valid was coffin arm rubber had tiny hole and petrol cap needed replacing  -  work done by specialist and sailed through MoT!

I really believe there are some garages where testers are not used to Porsches and absolutely hammer them - maybe even Porsche envy or they think all Porky owners are smarmy gits!

I can't be bothered complaining but 10 points of failure with only 2 actually valid and they can't tell the difference between mud and corrosion!!

Grrr!

Sorry to learn of your harsh MoT treatment, however by not complaining they get away with it and potentially others (even forum members if the recommendation came from here) will get mistreated too.

That's true Boxob,

There is an online process for complaining to VOSA I believe - I have heard that they are less interested in garages passing a banger with faults than they are garages that give false failings in order to charge the customer to rectify them ao I'll give it a go.

Are you willing to name?

I guess I'd better hold off with that until I have complained to VOSA.

The garage is in London SW17 so if anyone wants to PM me I can tell them!

I'm (hopefully) fortunate that my local indy organises the MOT at a place right next door. Last year there was an initial problem with headlight height but the indy just nipped round and fixed it. Will be 'interesting' to see what happens this time (couple of weeks) with the new MOT regs.

I have a VW indie behind my work who are a tuner/modification garage more than anything, so always goto them as they are sympathetic with modded cars and older cars. They do things like headlight adjustments for free and retest it without hassle or charge.

AGREED! testers who either let dangerous vehicles through or in this case are trying to get work for their garage (or have a vendetta against Porsches), should be checked out by DVSA. They have several options from retraining, a wrap over the knuckles, or withdrawing the tester's licence. If complicit with the garage owner then a complete withdrawal of the garage' MOT Authorisation, and even criminal proceedings. (I've taken all of the above actions, except the very last one.) I'm sure DVSA would still be interested in your experience!.

I had an issue with a recommended local a few years ago on my daughter's car.  We took it in with 3 weeks before expiry but it was failed on 4 items including one not possible for a basic SEAT which was electronic stability control dash light (before rules on dash warning lights changed) it was actually the EPC light.  I lodged a official complaint, they arranged a retest at the same location with their inspector and the original tester present.  The tester lost his ticket and so did the garage when the VOSA guy did fail it (on something I suspected) but none of the things the garage came up with all still with the EPC light on.  Took a bit of time but it got a con man out of the game for a bit.
