Aaaagghhhhhh Autoglass!

It never rains but it pours.

Some of you will know that i’m considering moving my car on.

Unfortunately my detailer had an incident replacing the wiper blades and caused a tiny chip on the screen which has now cracked.

Booked in with autoglass (as per insurers instructions) and then got a call telling me it would take a little long to get the glass so appointment re-arranged to today.

I live round the corner from their head office so was here first thing (I’ve been here before with other vehicles and been happy with their work) and the guy who’s based here has done a number of Porsche’s.

Sadly, two hours later it’s clear that the screen doesn’t fit, the top corners are sticking out massively.

They’ve apologised and are trying to order a new OEM screen, but now the concern is that it won’t come and be done in time for me to potentially trade it in if we decide to go with the 991 tomorrow!

That's a bummer. Had a new Pilkington screen in mine recently. Having read of other people's issues with replacements i was pretty concerned. Initial fit wasn't perfect but i was watching closely and got the techs to reposition it properly and couldn't argue with final result despite it not being an oem screen. What make was the one they tried to fit?

Apparently it’s a common occurrence.... you’d think they’d learn

Very, did the same with my 986 as documented on here. Took a grand total of 2 windscreens and 5 visits (i think) to put right.

That sets alarm bells ringing. I had the same experience with a boggo Passat (believe it or not)

I think the fitter got frustrated and was a bit brutal removing the old sealant because a few months later it started to rust around the screen.

I'm wondering if he broke through the paint / galvanization in his frustration...

Wouldn't surprise me. The first time they fitted bad seals that were sticking up like Catwomans ears at each corner, supposedly "that's how they are mate". They ended up fitting an oem windscreen and seals which surprise, surprise fitted perfectly.

If he was fitting the screen to a Honda Type-R he'd have probably told you it was part of the aero...

Sodding typical - hope you get it sorted in time for car shopping tomorrow.

shame no one has bought it, i’m sure they’ll try and cut you to the knees on px so take off anything you can before it goes in! 😜

Autoglass fitted a new tailgate glass to my other (old) car under insurance. It's an old car with the then common rubber  surround - not glued in like most modern screens. Have the maker's manual for this car which gives the sealer you must use. Watched them fit it dry. It leaked, of course. They then said it needed a new surround rubber - not covered by insurance. But they would fit it free if I got one. Which I did, from a specialist. They scratched the paint in two places removing the screen. And it still leaked with the new rubber. Took the car to a local independent windscreen specialist who removed it, had the paint fixed, and fitted it leak free at last. Cost me £360.

I badly need to get mine done, its got a million little chips on it and milking to both bottom corners and couple of large chips that will probably fail the MOT next time (its the original screen it think) 22yrs old.

These horror stories are really making me nervous about making the call.

Well to be fair to the fitter, they know it’s wrong and didn’t try to fob me off. As such I’ve been more than fair, and he’s said that as soon as a new screen comes in he’ll do it regardless of what else they have booked in.

they’re also going to keep it in their booth overnight each day in case it rains.

As with all franchises quality can vary. Had mine done by Autoglass (Newcastle) a couple of months ago. I had been putting it off for years but had to bite the bullet as I cracked the windscreen getting the gear knob off (long story). I had removed all the cowling etc before they came and bubble wrapped the dashboard etc. To cut a long story short, they were excellent and I've had no issues at all. Seems to be a bit of a lottery.

I had the screen done by Autoglass on the Boxster two years ago, when I booked it in I told them it had to OEM glass and I physically checked it before they fitted it, no problems at all. They did the rear screen on my Jaguar XF Sportbrake a few months ago, there was a little issue during fitting but I left him to it and it was fine. I think we have to accept that every company, whether franchised or not, makes mistakes, anyway fingers crossed you get it sorted quickly and move on.

Well I’ve nipped down to see them this morning. Good news is the car’s still there. Bad news is that the glass won’t be here until Thursday so it has to be right and work otherwise trading in on Friday morning is going to be tricky! Fingers crossed

It’s also scuppered the last minute fire sale privately to beat the trade in offer. Oh well, it’s only money.

I'm the same, I really notice it getting into the car compared to my daily but read so many horror stories!
