Paul chocks
Need a new hood for my car at some point in the near future. I have heard that it is possible to fit the facelift hood (with frame) to the earlier car. Is this easy enough? I've also noticed that most are sold as hood and frame, but I've seen a couple recently that are attached to the donor car's roll bars. Would this make it easier or more difficult to retrofit? anyhting I need to be particularly aware of?
bally4563
Six bolts and disconnect the push rod arms, 10 mm spanner and make sure you disconnect the limit switch / bracket by the top of the near side door, simple but easier with another pair of hands. Paul chocks
Sounds good. Is that just switching the hood and frame, or with the complete roll-bar set up?
topradio
I have done this to my 986 and its a really great mod. The original window was milky and creased from day one and, to me, the line didn't look quite right. In theory its a straight swap, just 3 bolts on each side. I also replaced the drive transmissions as the later ones are said to be more reliable. If you do this you will have to swap the control 'relay' for the later one as well. There's a great write up here https://sites.google.com/site/mikefocke2/installinga'03-'04glasstopandframeona'

The roof is completely separate from the roll bar.
Paul chocks
Hmm, that what I would have thought #topradio, however, there have been a few for sale like this: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F163760107401 and it makes me wonder why the bars are there too. PS Yes, I DO realise this is an early hood - just using the advert to illustrate my question!
topradio
Not seen them sold like that before, normally the roof is simply unbolted from the roll bars and lifted off the car. You definitely don't need to replace the roll bars.
bally4563
Lazy seller , and not unbolted off the roll bar and has removed the whole lot out just via unbolting the roll bar at the bottom
topradio
All you need is this, but a facelift one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-BOXSTER-986-BLACK-CONVERTIBLE-ROOF-ASSEMBLY/174007867643?hash=item2883ad58fb:g:ExkAAOSwZGFdDkm8
topradio
And get a genuine Porsche one. There are often a number available where an aftermarket roof fabric with a glass window has been fitted to the original frame but these have a smaller window that doesn't look right, it also causes problems putting it in the service position to access the engine. The genuine one has a PORSCHE logo at the bottom of the screen.
Malcolm E Box
I did this on the 986 I had. The whole job took 20 minutes. An absolute breeze to do. A second pair of hands will make the job even easier.

Boxob
Am I right that on early 2.5 models there is an issue with the sensor in the central release when a later hood and frame is fitted?
topradio
There is a limit switch on the frame of the earlier hood that was moved to inside the transmission on the later one. I solved the problem by fitting the later transmissions otherwise I would have had to move the switch over and fitted it to the new frame.
