Key Transmitter - not transponder

OK, thought I'd break this out into a new thread.

Some of you will have read that my only fully working key went for a cool wash in the washing machine a week or so ago.  I dried it all out a soon as I could, removed the battery and the transmitter circuit board with battery holder from the key body and put it in a bag with rice for a couple of days near a warm radiator.  On reassembling it all with a fresh battery, it works, however since then it is flattening a battery in less than 24 hours, so a little impractical.  I've cleaned it all down with contact cleaner but to no avail.

So here is the scenario I have two original keys, both have the original transponder unit (the small black capsule) and open the car with the door look and start the car with no problem (unless you are too slow and the alarm goes off).  One of these looks as though the main unlocking switch on the transmitter circuit board has had a poor attempt at a solder repair and the other is the nice clean one that flattens the coin battery very quickly.

Is there anyone out there who can check the functionality of these units and repair them?

Would another transmitter circuit board assembly, say from a breaker, pair with the car? - remember the transponder unit is OK

Can you buy just the circuit board component new and pair that?

Are any of the above less than £300 for an new complete key from an OPC?

I can't help with all the technical stuff about transponders and circuit boards, but just thought I'd ask an obvious question - Are you absolutely sure the batteries you're using are good?  The reason I say that is, I collect watches and replace the batteries myself, so I've always got a stock of different sizes ready to go.  It's not unheard of for them to be old and out of date, even when you've bought them new.  Or sometimes they're just duff even when newly bought, and if you try a different one they work fine.  A battery tester can be bought for a couple of quid on ebay, and is a quick way of finding out for sure if the battery is any good.

For my watches I tend to buy cheap and cheerful batteries that cost around 1 or 2 quid for 10, and they almost always work fine, but in your case it might be worth paying a bit more and go for something like Maxell, Panasonic, or Duracell.  They're still cheap, maybe 99p each, or half a dozen for 2 or 3 quid, and unless you're sure the batteries you've tried are good I'd say it might be worth a punt.

Just my 2p worth anyway :D

Presumably, the remote bit now doesn't work.?

Both my keys will flatten the battery in a similar time..... Tried new buttons, and a general tidy up of soldering etc, but to no avail.

Hi Paul reading the OP it seems the key works fine but his issue is the battery goes flat in 24 hours.

Yes, just skim read.

Different to mine then as they don't work either.

@1/2CWT when my remotes from my 986 went odd, intermittent functions I sent them to www.keyfobrepair.co.uk who sorted it out for £35.00 and came back in a new case. It has not missed a beat since. I rang them and they were very helpful, might be worth a try.

3 CR2032 batteries all lasted less than a day.  These are from the same batch and are in date. Next one will be from a different pack. We've got a lot of other devices that run this type of battery hence having a good stock at home from IKEA which have not cause a problem before even if they are not the longest lasting.  More than 24 hours in a remote though I'd hope!

Thanks for that @Toddie I've looked up their website and it looks encouraging.  The problem points to a current drain on the 'working' one but looking to send both for overhaul. £70 + postage seems a good punt to bring at least one back to life.

BTW If they were good to you, write them a review on their website as there is no feedback on the 911 / 986 service currently to check their performance against.

My teachers used to write RTQ on my work.  Read the Question.... 😉

Thanks John.

Might be worth thinking about buying a cheap battery tester, just to rule out duff batteries. The one I've got is here, and it's quite a handy thing to have anyway:

My fob is the same, batteries dont last more than a day or so.  Some manufacturers last a little longer but none has lasted more than 2 days, there is nothing wrong with the battery voltage, it's the key fob.

Car's laid up for winter so seems like a good time to send the key off for repair.

I had a similar thing with battery drain. I sent the key off for repair but they couldn't fix the problem. You might be better off putting the £70 towards a new key which can be coded from a Porsche specialist. In Surrey Eporsch can do it for around £220.

I sent my spare key to this company on Thursday and it was returned today, fantastic service. The main unlock button had broken and I knew the transponder was working as the bottom two buttons for the boot and front boot still worked. I guess they replace a micro-switch inside as well as the button side of the plastic fob. @Toddie thank you very much, it has saved me a lot of money. 👍

Thanks for this @GmanB.  I'll start by sending my worst key, that the case doesn't close on properly and which might then need to be paired with the car again as it has not been used successfully for a long time, and see what comes back.
