Boxster 987 Exhaust

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm quite new to the forum but I've been looking for a Boxster 987 and test drove a 987.1 2.7 manual. The exhaust that was fitted to it was a Top Gear non-valved exhaust but it was bit louder than what I was wanting. I was wanting an exhaust that sounded like the OEM Porsche exhaust.

My questions are:

1 - Is there an aftermarket exhaust that anyone can recommend that sounds similar to the OEM Porsche exhaust?

2 - Has anyone got an OEM exhaust in decent condition that they've removed from their car and would be looking to sell?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Matt

Hi Matt

You should be able to pick up a used oem exhaust pretty easily and not too expensive but the problem is they are too quite.

I had a Top Gear valved exhaust on my 987.1 and yes it was loud even with the valves closed but my standard exhaust was to tame😩

The options are standard or a modified Carnewal oem exhaust, slightly louder but not Top Gear loud. You could try a oem exhaust with a bypass mod which I tried but didn’t work for me.

The final option and probably the most expensive is a dealer fit Porsche sports exhaust which gives you the best of both being valved but probably the thick end of £2k😉

Been there, done that! Fortunately i was able to get my Top Gear exhaust modified to kill the drone. I found the oem exhaust too quiet and as with most of us wanted a more throaty sound. A  Carnewal mod is best for that. You can pick up an oem exhaust from one of the breakers on ebay but may cost you.

And welcome, by the way.

As it happens I spoke to my local Porsche dealer just out of interest and was quoted £4.5k plus fitting!! 🤪

Not sure to be honest, I soon lost interest when he said that! I just asked for the standard factory fit exhaust.

Fair. So as an example re the link I sent 987.2 PSE with Twin tailpipe comes out best part of 2.5k re standard pricing fitted.

I can understand why not many people replace them with an OEM exhaust when they need changing.

Yes - Carnewal seems good bang for buck and when travelling is not a mare sounds like the trip to Gert's for some has been an experience.

I have the stock item. I think it sounds great when you're giving it some. Sometimes I think it could be more crackly but I'm done with shouty exhausts.

There's a thread on rennlist somewhere where someone who'd had a carnewal cut it open to see what had been done. Wasn't rocket science - if you know someone who can weld thin plate you can get it done without all the shipping malarkey.

that's crazy - for a PSE? someone is taking the p**s there - are they an OPC or something else? As 2.5k tops fitted at an OPC. And a lot less for nonPSE at indys.

another thought on retro-fitting a 'stock' exhaust. People regularly upgrade to a better one, carnewal, pse, dansk, etc and there is no market for the ones that come off the cars - mine was offered back to me if I wanted it - but otherwise it's just chucked into skip at the dealer (as mine was). The exhaust tips are saleable on ebay so hang on to those but the rest of it worthless.

So.... indys or main dealers are bound to have usable non-corroded second hand stock exhausts coming off cars - and you could maybe ask around and snaffle one of those for next to nothing... or from a scrappy you should get one there also.

I suspect someone just got that pricing wrong re a Boxster....

The earlier Tequipment Finder link I posted shows the pricing across a range of cars.

I've got a miltek stainless on my 3.2 and it sounds lovely. Not boomy or droney but a bit fatter and more sporty than the OEM exhaust... A good aftermarket option I reckon...

I was about to say miltek. I don’t have one personally, but I believe it’s on the quieter side compared to a top gear or similar one.

No affiliation, but just seen that a guy on the Cayman and Boxster Owners UK (CABO UK) group on facebook is has just removed one from his car. Can't link his post but if you aren't on facebook (or in that group) I could drop him a reply if you want to try and contact him.

Thanks for the tip off, just requested to join the group. I've told the seller (truthfully) that having to swap the exhaust takes the car out of my budget. I'd managed to find a stock exhaust at a breakers but by the time I get it fitted your talking £800-£1k from the quotes I was getting.

That's surprising - there's a few on ebay around £300 and I would guess at 2 hours to fit it for an exhaust 'specialist', assuming it's a Cat back system you're after.  Ignore all that if it needs manifolds and cats as well!

The breakers wanted £500 and then quotes to fit it were for 2-3 hours work plus replacement of clamps and bolts.

I've been down the 2nd hand route and would suggest avoid unless you have to.

One I got looked alright on the surface but when cleaned up a bit was full of micro-cracks and these things aren't going to be getting any younger.

Of course your mileage may vary and you may score a good unit.

If you want something 2nd hand that looks stock but with more sound, I believe Gert will sell a unit outright, ballpark £1k if memory serves, at least you know you'll get something with some come back on.

Lots of other choices out there of course.

Just thought I'd share my own 2nd hand experience.

I have a Carnewal on my 2.7, sounds amazing quiet if you pootle and over about 5k goes nuts. I haven't had a chance to have the top up on the motorway until this week, dunno if it is because my other car is electric and I am used to silence but does drone a little.

Find a car with the exhaust on you want, plenty out there.

Not had much luck getting my request to join the CABO group accepted yet, it still says pending. @Paul P any digging you can do on my behalf would be much appreciated.
