Roof went SNAP, ****, POP! Now doesn't work

Roof went Snap/POP and then the fabric part of the hood didn't close today, for the first time in 16 years!. I did manage to close it manually very easily and lock it in place.

Does anyone know if this is a quick fix I could attempt myself, I don't even know where to start!

Any good hood/Porsche Indys that folks have used to fix their roof and around South Bucks/NW London?

Even recently dyed the roof and getting the car back to A1 condition, guess it was only a matter of time for something to go wrong with the roof.

Worth a read - could just be the plastic control rod cap/caps

Most likely the plastic shoulders. Before you remove the old ones, put some electrical tape at the base of them on the rod thread. That way you will know how far to screw the new ones down.

A few videos on youtube to help.

A couple of recent threads deal with this. I'm not a very practical individual, but even I managed this repair myself. An indie had quoted £107.00 plus vat to replace these. Watch the YouTube videos, they are very helpful.

I've got a couple spare - but check first if the white gromet has broken or if the control arm (metal black bit) has actually bent as well - mine did - and I needed two new control arms and not just the white bits.

anyway, if control arms not bent then gromets only, if bent then you need two full control arms.

Can you bend the arms back?

don't think so - unless you're a lot stronger than me. I guess if you take them off and hammer them flat it might work - but not in-situ.

and there will have been a reason they snapped in the first place - either hood not unlatched properly when you tried to open it electronically or maybe a stuck cable or something else. Would make sure with the arms off (white gromets off the ball joint on both sides) that the hood manually moves up and down freely just in case.

The hood was down and open, the snap was heard when I was trying to close the hood. I was able to manually close the hood over the weekend and also, opened the hood manually today and went for a nice drive in the sunshine :)... The question I still need to figure out is what caused the gromets/white caps to snap. I have noticed a slight judder when the roof opens or closes the last few times, I tired to lubricate this but it didnt work. I think I will try to sort out the juddering first while I await deliver of the replacement caps.

good plan. Mind went that way when trying to close too - bang bang - pretty definitively. think the cables might get stuck and the control arms keep pushing while the cables hold it back and bang the white gromets fracture. I hear the cables need a bit of grease now and again but i've not done that myself - maybe others here have done it and can give some guidance.

by the way, when you fit the new gromets you need to adjust the front of the hood to touch the top of the windscreen evenly left to right - you can do this by unscrewing one side or other a turn or two to even up left and right sides of the hood so it approaches the top of the windscreen equally both sides. If you find you've nearly unscrewed them then the control arms are bent.

They can snap due to old age, as well as mechanical stress - had one go on mine , plastic had just aged.

Some Porsche plastics you just need to look at and they break - mate refers to them as "suicide plastic".

I used some dry ptfe on my roof rails to fix a slight judder on mine - it doesn't attract dirt/dust.

I had recently purchased the WD40 Silicone spray and will now try this lubricant instead

Grommets arrived today and also fixed the Judder with the dry ptfe... that worked a treat!

teplaced the groomets and in the process  realised that one arm is bent ... will try and bend it but really want to replace it with a new part. Does anyone know the part number and is OPC the cheapest place for this?

Arm should be 987 561 279 00 or possibly 01. Definitely worth checking OPC who may well be cheapest - i just bought 2 coil springs which came in cheaper than anywhere else, even before PCGB discount, and they delivered them with no extra charge.

Yes the dry ptfe is good stuff.

As per @red rocketI'd say try OPC and ask for 10% Porsche club/Tipec discount off.

From memory the full rod (which comes with the plastic ball cup) is about £50 and the latest part number is now 987 561 279 03

Thanks, I will try OPC today but not sure the discount warrants me paying to join PCGB.

Just try asking anyway - others have received it without joining either club.

I asked them for the discount and they said no problem, whats your membership number :) ha!

Also confirmed that the code for my 987.1 for this part is: 987 561 279 02

Yep, definitely worth a try as I then rang another dealership and just asked them if they could give me a discount anyway of 10%, they said no but did offer 7.5%... so if you don't ask you don't receive!  Really appreciate the suggestion!
