Hi all,

Been a while since I was last on the forum - I sold my yellow S last year to scratch the 928 itch. I found one and they are awesome cars, it's in guards red and stunning to look at and drive, however they need a lot of time spent working on them, particularly in the electrics dept which I have found I am sh!t at; this one suffers from deferred maintenance in previous ownership so a lot has been put right in my tenure but there's still plenty to do, and I will break everything else along the way. Work has got busy again and I don't have much time now so it's time to say bye-bye to my lovely 928 (msg me if interested) and get back behind the wheel of a 986.

I've added a 'wants' ad in the appropriate section here, but thought I'd add a note here too in case anyone is looking to sell. Has to be guards red but I'm interested in any spec / engine size - I've had a 2.5 which was ace and an S so know the pros and cons of each.

Cheers

Mark

Thank you, yes, fingers crossed! I know everybody here loves their cars so makes sense to start here, there's a few for sale in the usual places, one on FB marketplace caught my eye but is a trade in for a garage, plus I'd rather buy here and support the community if I can.

I'd keep the 928 but only have one garage!

I absolutely adore the 928, but I’m also cr*p at electrics and not a fan of red...  I suspect it’s another hero I’ll never meet.
Which model did you get? S4 or S2?

Thanks, S2 it is with black interior / red piping, proper 80s wagon, it is stunning and I want it to stay, got to be realistic mind! 4.7 v8 roar!

I take it the 928 is a runner that needs further work rather than a non running project with electrical issues?  I did follow your thread on it for a while and you got a lot done.

Now how could I find space for a 928 🤔 ... oh and avoid crucifixion by SWMBO.  Her Golf Cabrio could go on the road with two Porsches on the drive! And now I wake up 😞

Hello bud! Yeah it runs great, my trouble is that I start fixing something in my spare time and run out of time, then it can be weeks before I get time to finish the work, I forget where I got to and have to redo half of it. I try and do everything myself as I find garages can be like butchers, which is not great with cars like these. May end up keeping it, I would be happy keeping a 986 on the drive over summer but not too long, I have a thing about cars being left outside, so if I can find one that's been garaged for a good while it would be ideal.

On the 928 I've gone through most of the earths, new fuses, tested and cleaned up all the relay contacts, oil/filter, air filter, machine polish the whole car, refurbed the wheels and calipers, done the wheel bearings, cv boot stearing rack gaiter, ball joints, new osf spring, spark plugs, cleaned up under the arches, new front Pirelli P7s, new head unit, replaced the clock, o/s window motor clean up, drivers seat electical adjustment fixed, sunroof was dead but I stripped it down, lubed and rebuilt, new head unit. Loads of other tiny niggles done and when things are removed they get cleaned / painted before they go back on. Was looking at dry ice blasting not long back.

The local mechanic broke the door handle when he did the suspension work - ffs, more shyate to fix! Driving it the other day to work and the abs starts pumping while I'm driving at 30mph - this was the last straw (where do I start with this new rabbit hole!) - headed home to get another car out. I still haven't got to the cam belt and the rad really needs replacing at the same time as it'll give easier access. So, I'm getting some satisfaction of keeping the old girl alive, learning a lot, but this is jaded by lack of driving pleasure, it'll come given time but I'm an impatient bastard that wants everything done yesterday! I've had 2 very good 986s so knowing how good they can be I should get another, let's see if I can find the right car... Will update as and when things move along.

I too had a 928 itch back when they were just old cars and cheap. There was a guy up the road in Leicester who specialised in them and had 3 for sale. When I got there he had 7 or 8. 3 had the interiors completely stripped and wires everywhere, one had been scraped all down one side and 3 were running. Allegedly. He talked me out of the blue one I liked and we went for a ride in the black one with that weird LSD trip checked upholstery. He gave it the beans and I was in love. On the drive back to his place it dropped onto 5 or 6 cylinders and a bunch of lights came on the dash. He made no attempt to stop me leaving. I think a lot of them went through the neglected stage and they're very complex cars - little neglect goes a long way....

Great story! Yes indeed, the molly-coddled ones are best, but they're crazy prices. Mine would be great if I had nothing else going on in my life as it would keep me busy! I know that every car that gets neglected will cause trouble but these take the biscuit! Shame to see it go as it's very nice to look at.
