987.2 servicing/warranty priorities

3 months into ownership of my 25k mile 2009 2.9 and I need to make 'investment' decisions

Bought from a (non-Porsche) franchised dealer after a successful 31st December negotiation but had no service book - confirmed that early services done at OPC's and last one in March '20 at local specialist (together with plenty of work done/documented pre '21 MOT)

Do I

a) blow my bonus/become best friend of local OPC, get it serviced by them and throw 2 years Porsche Warranty/Breakdown at it whilst getting replacement service book etc

b) re-visit local specialist for servicing then run without warranty/ take generic breakdown cover - invest additional in replacement ICE

Any combination of the above ?

I'm expecting to double the mileage in the next couple of years - Alps/Monaco GP/Cornwall etc if that has any bearing

Fellow 987.2'er here.

I bought from a Indy and did a). I've just had a new roof cover out of the Porsche warranty (about 4k on paper) so don't regret my decision to convert to a Porsche extended warranty even though I had to have it re-serviced, 111 pt check etc.

If you're able to establish which OPCs serviced it, you should be able to get redacted work/service items from them (as well as a stamp in your replacement book).

I should add that I had the original service book with mine but I know others who have been down this road...

I'd be inclined to put the £1800 you would hand over for OPC breakdown away and use it for regular servicing and maintenance with a respected I dependant. develop that relationship.

your car is a low mileage gen 2 and generally reliable machines.

unlikely to spend beyond that amount in 2 years.

YMMV , mine is a PDK and the primary motivator for my having warranty cover (pretty much a whole unit swap out with a few sensor exceptions). I rationalised mine as a 60 quid a month spend re the warranty and it's the most bullet proof one I can get on the car. Of course I did have those upfront costs re servicing, 111 pt etc but that's the rules of their setup.

No wrong answers here, all down to the risk appetite you have.

Again maybe I was unlucky but a rear screen element failing meant new roof time and I'm glad I didn't have to pickup that tab.

It's like all insurance you may never need it , but you're glad when you've got it and it sorts it.

But your car, your rules, to nick a mate's phrase.

Another 987.2 bought from specialist and put onto Porsche warranty.

have not had a claim.  Also. Have not had any panic moments when it “felt funny” or “made an odd noise”

I don’t have an Indy nearby who I trust enough or is cheap enough to drive me to have it serviced outside of the dealer network.

there’s no wrong answer because it’s purely down to how you want to spend your money, if the car has mostly Porsche parts and recent , matched N rated tyres then it’s viable. If you have to spend a couple of grand to get it to their “spec” then probably not.

I figure it costs a tank of fuel a month and includes euro breakdown cover.

for me it adds to (or at least re-enforces) the fun factor and while I can afford it and they will still cover it I will probably continue with it.

agree with all of the above. It depends on you and how comfortable you are with "what if" etc

MY experience has been buy a well sorted car and get it maintained regardless of cost. That way the car doesnt' give unexpected surprises and costs.

I have kept up the BMW warranty on the family SUV. It costs me £400 a year and gives piece of mind. Never claimed on it, but it was double the price of the 987.2 S PDK

Thanks all - plenty of views there to reinforce my previous thoughts and I need to decide my appetite for risk

Final Q - is the Porsche Breakdown cover only available with warranty etc or can it be taken seperately without the 111pt check etc ?

Think its a bolt on - you can have the warranty without the assist - but I don't think I have seen it the other way around - its underwritten in the UK by the AA as far as I know - and when the "porsche trained technician, with porsche diagnostics" arrives - they look distinctly like an AA tech with a snap-on diags kit.

My thinking there is "if a bad thing happens on the way from roadside assistance to opc" ( like thew forgot it's a pdk and try to tow it for example ) then it's all "Porsche's" problem.

That said, mate with a GT3 had a puncture at Le Mans a couple of years ago - called Porsche assist who found a replacement tyre at an approved centre ( with the centre lock required equipment) about 10 mins away from the circuit - he was able to use the gunk/pump to make the car drivable - and was back at the circuit in < an hour. So perhaps theres more to the logistics side of the service than actual tech in a van.

That would be the HUGE OPC on the western ring road in Le Mans I guess then...  😉

Not sure it was to be honest.  He seemed to suggest it was a backstreet “Claude’s Pneu” type of place but wherever it was they took the legwork out of finding it and checking on availability.
