Bumper Re-spray or front end?

Hi Guys -

Someone has dinked my motor  -

Slight amount of crazing on the front bumper - just by the numberplate.

Not very visible - but super annoying all the same.

Rang & emailed a local garage for a costing for both - not heard anything back.

It's basalt black - if i did a single - would it look pony?

Full front end, what? a grand?

Any decent paintshops Surrey / SW london that you guys have udes?

Cheers Y'all

Paint protection film. Clear plastic maybe 1mm thick, not easily noticeable, but deflects/absorbs stone impacts before they bite into your paintwork. Very appropriate on a front bumper.  As you have a 987 you might already have a couple of triangular patches just behind the doors.

I've had both front and rear bumper PUs painted (Arctic Silver so a bit more forgiving than black) at different times and have no issues.  About £250 each when given to body shop as a stripped component ready for them to prep.  Another tip is to find an independent body shop that does custom or restoration work rather than loads of insurance.

Price will be dependent on location. I was quoted £600 for two ready prepared bumpers in the south. Materials cost gone right up. I ended up buying the paint for £100 and getting local guy to do it for £200 inc lacquer. You get what you pay for, but this suits the patina of the rest of my car.

Been around the loop with this kind of thing in the past on other cars.

Here's where my head is - if I can find someone who can make it go away and I am prepared to pay what they want - then we have a full and frank discussion up front about "how hard it is to match paint on plastic, or it's needs blending or whatever" - then if I think I am going to get what I want then I will go for it.

But I remember when I decided it was worth having a bumper replaced because someone dinked it - and it was horrible and I ended up getting it done again ( with a new bumper) - my lesson learned was "cant change what happened" and "it could end up much worse"

And yeah I am fussy.... but this is what the car looked like BEFORE it got repaired - couple of dinks, a scrape and an imprint (hard to see) of the impact bar behind the bumber ( 3rd party in this case admitted full liability )

This is what the "premium car body restoration specialist - which it turned out is partly owned by the Insurance company" tried to give me back

Even though it wasn't my fault and the person who hit me was being a d*ick and I shouldn't have to have a damaged car and it annoyed me and and and ... it took 4 months to get the insurance co to agree that the repair wasn't great - and eventually they got the 1st garage to pay for the re -repair at another place ( who did a really good job and had the "grown up" conversation above with me before they touched the car" in hindsight I probably should have just left it alone... it wasn't worth the aggrevation.

Fromthere on in - I am careful to set expectations and I also have to acknowledge - cheap isn't (automatically) best and I totally agree with 1/2 cwt on finding someone who isn't part of the ins co closed loop money extraction system.

I had a bad colour match like that on a company car when a rear bumper was replaced after I was tail ended on slow traffic on a dual carriageway.  I refused to accept the car back when it was delivered to me.  I did have the advantage that I was holding on to their loan car keys so has a little leverage.  It came back 4 days later as it should have first time and I pointed out to the body shop manager should he should have been ashamed at trying to pass off the first repair as satisfactory.

I had my 2 year-old S3 rear bumper repaired after being rear-ended on a roundabout. No bits hanging off and only looked minor. I went through Audi claims handling type of arrangement through the main dealer.

New OEM everything including bumper cover and trims, new rear inner strengthener, new reversing sensors, everything else it needed, ceramic coating, loan car was a convertible A5 for seven days. No personal injury claim.

Having done car bodywork in the past I'm very picky. The job was as good as factory finish, metallic blue and a perfect colour match. Honestly can't tell it ever happened.

The price was £2900 for the repair and another £1900 for car hire, all paid for by the 'at fault' party's insurance.

You could argue that it's putting up the price of insurance for everyone, and even though I wasn't at fault and got my excess back, my premium went up by £30 the following year 'because I'm more likely to claim in future'. I could have let the bloke who ran into me pay £200 for a local 'independent' to repair and repaint the cover, accepted a few filler sanding marks, a bit of orange peel and overspray, a slightly different colour under certain lights and a repair and a finish that doesn't last. But I was entitled to have my car repaired properly by his insurance company - the party 'at fault'. Do your research and don't be fobbed off and accept a second rate job from your insurance company's own bodyshop partner that they could steer you towards.
