Porsche Macan wheels

Hi, I’ve seen a Macan GTS that I’m thinking about purchasing but have two questions:

- it has all the spec I want apart from air suspension. Is this necessary?

- the RS spyder wheels are silver and I’d prefer black. Is it possible to have these resprayed and any idea of rough cost?

All thoughts appreciated.

Thanks.

Graham

Graham,

I have a 2018 Macan GTS on non air suspension and the handing and comfort are superb even on UK roads.

A friend has air and wished he had non air. His 2017 is having problems with the air suspension.

If it's  a long term keeper far less to go wrong.

No idea on the costs of respraying the wheels though! What's the exterior car colour?

Hi, thanks for the quick reply - it’s volcano grey. What colour and spec do you have?

Carmine red

GTS interior red accents

Panroof

Surround cameras

Active cruise

18 way seats

Bose

Actually I was very fortunate to get a 2 year old car 15,000 miles with every option ticked apart from air suspension and roof bars from a guy who changed his car every 2 years.

Gen1, 2 or 3?

Does it have roof bars, are they chrome or black?

Silver spyders do look okay on Volcano grey.

Black spyders are a bit of a pain to keep clean, I had Silver spyders on my old S and I remember them being easier to take care of......but GTS to me means it should have black.

I have a 2017 GTS in Carmine Red and have the black 21" Sport Classics with silver/cut lip, I had all 4 refurbed at Porches expense with Exel Wheels for £750 I think. But I wasn't paying and I went for a painted lip rather than diamond cut as they always cause problems. Find a local place to you and give them a call see what they charge.

I also have the PASM (non air) version and have no issues with it at all on any road type, I think I'd only want air if I was towing a caravan or big stuff to get the auto levelling, too much to go wrong otherwise.

Sport Classics are a heck of a lot easier to keep clean. It takes me almost as long to clean the wheels as the whole rest of the car.

Air is the ultimate ride quality.

I have had it on a Cayenne S ran it up to 160 K miles only thing that went was a wire connector and the Indy simply re soldered it £50 or something a decade ago .

Since then I ran a Bentley GT for euro trips which has air as std .They are universal bolt on struts found on many high end cars .You could really tell the difference with the settings on the Bentley.

Both cars had two sets of wheels one with proper winters for sking .

Its std on full fat RR too .  Makes a difference.

Cayenne s summers back then were mega 285/30/22 , yes twenty twos the air added comfort but we never really ran it in sport .Which brings me round to the point these SUV s Cayenne/ Macan are not sports cars , they miss due to lardy ness and higher CoG by a million miles , having said that the Bentley with a bi turbo W12 and nay on 600 Hp + equal symmetrical 4WD did handle .

The Macan ( wife’s car  + my trial bike tug ) is nice to drive but I am not kidding my self , sold , duped by Porsche it’s imho a glorified AUDI SUV …..a pick of the crop sure .

It’s Gen 1 with black roof bars.

TBH, I’m wondering whether I should be looking at black rather than volcano grey 🤔although, whilst I love black, I said never again after having a black E92 M3 which was very difficult to keep clean!

Has it had the transfer box replaced as warranty on these is only 7 years or is it under Porsche warranty?

They only replace them of there's a problem as per usual it's not a recall.  Same if its the Gen1 with the Porsche Engine and the over torqued cam cover bolts that break, only done under warranty and it's an engine out job according to Porsche as the bolts are at the back of the engine.

Usual horror stories, like IMS and bore score on other models, not all are affected.

Agree that the timing chain cover issue is overblown. Certainly wouldn't put me off. It's got PSH, it would likely have occurred by now if it had been affected. Transfer boxes do seem more prevalent hence why they extended the warranty from 3 to 7 years, something Porsche wouldn't normally do🤔

Good question - it has full PSH but I don’t know about the transfer box. Which models were affected and is it a recall issue. Really grateful for the question.

You should be able to find out from the OPC that has looked after the car. There are some checks you can do to see if it us showing any sign of problems.

Nice combo that a 981 GTS and a Macan...  :)

We've got a Gen 2 Macan without Air suspension and I'd agree with some of the comments - not at all necessary, even on 20's the ride is great.
It's all personal perf, but I think the silver RS wheels are way better than the black ones (which you could have refurbed black for about £65 a wheel if you must :) ). Silver wheels especially cool on a dark colour like Volcano grey or black - the contrast is great.

Recolour can be done by loads of folks, here is an example https://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/wheel-finishes/customise-your-wheels )

@CMA, I had the dreaded timing cover oil leak on my 2017 Macan S & all the work was done on the bolts on the front of the engine. It was also done without removing the engine by Leeds OPC.  The engine that has the the bolts @ the back of the engine is the Diesel engine, which because it is much more thermally efficient than the petrol engine does not suffer the same rate of failure. I know this because I recently saw a diesel Macan engine having this engine stripped down to undertake this job,@ an open night @ my local OPC, the technician involved on the job told me this. The engine was removed from the car.
My Macan has 21” turbo wheels painted satin black & has air suspension, & PASM & I think that the ride is excellent, however on my 18” winter wheels the ride is even better.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi Graham , On the wheel subject if it has a space saver wheel , get the dealer to inflate it to make sure it works. Just had to use mine for the first time brand new, and it would not inflate properly only inflated on one side, lop sided. luckily I have Porsche assist, still waited three hours by the roadside. Oh yes Porsche don't warrant the spare!!!!!
