PCM 4.76 update required

If your using a MR12v it doesn't matter what version your PCM is at.

I would upgrade the SSD in the PCM if your removing it though.

Logical to upgrade to an SSD first, I’ve read of several HD failures on 981s.  I upgraded mine last summer and the maps too - pretty simple if a little nerve racking at first.  Navigation is much faster afterwards.

I did mine last year.

Updated the firmware to 4.76, then cloned the HDD to SSD using a dedicated cloning device.

Is there any jiggery pokery re ensuring the Nav database is also at a correct version to take the firmware update ?

ISTR that I had to check the nav version first, but not sure now.

I do remember that I didn't update the Nav though, just cloned the partitions on the HDD.

The HDD is now sitting in a safe place in case of emergencies and I haven't had any problems at all with the SSD version.

ISTR that it was a bit time consuming and nerve wracking doing the firmware update, but the cloning was pretty quick and painless.

EDIT: I just found the firmware ISO saved on my Chromebook: "pcm_20150721"

EDIT2: These are the threads that i referred to to do the update/clone

Maybe you could share the file with @zagamuffinvia Google drive if he has the facility to burn the iso.

Sure could, either that or post a burned copy.  👍

@zagamuffin this is the cloning machine that I bought for the job.

and the SSD I used.

this thread has my upgrade experience

ive got the USB's and CDs, but afaik some of them are coded to the car vin.

I can lend them to you, but take no responsibility if it stuffs your HDD - I'd probably clone the HDD as a backup before you do a FW update in case it didn't work, and then reclone after the f/w update to a SSD

I bought a drive cloner and fitted an automotive grade SSD - It was expensive compared to a regular SSD but the HDD in the PCM is an automotive grade HDD - so it is rated to work at higher and lower temperatures than a standard SSD/HDD

If you want to borrow my drive cloner I can loan  it to with you.

if you haven't cloned your HDD, I would recommend you do it as a precaution as the HDD are coming to the end of their  operational life now, and if they go, you lose everything and are in a whole heap of pain with a junk PCM

it is worth checking your PCM F/W can be updated, as some of the PCM f/w does not like the map upgrades and cant be upgraded to F/W 4.76

I benefited from Moonshine’s great write up - belated thanks.  My car is the same model and age so you should be fine for versions to upgrade.

I agree the materials were unique to the car.

I also used a higher specification SSD - might be over the top but inside a hot/cold moving car is not the same as a pc and hopefully it’s a job you only do once.

Just going to read through your thread and Tks for the kind loan offer. Not sure it would work as I’m in Ireland but will keep in mind, maybe some support will be needed 😂

I can post the stuff if you need it

This one is the cloner I use. I got it from the Amazon.com website, so I think it came from the US

They look about right to me. 👍

I copied my entire MP3 music collection onto the 128GB drive with space left over.

I'm trying to remember whether I still have my ISO somewhere. I'll have a look.

I'm also trying to remember whether there are any VIN specific hoops to be jumped through in this process.

So, I have the ISO on my Chromebook 👍 I also found the DVD that I burned, which you put into the PCM slot to start the process.

The DVD looks a bit scratched, so, if you want a copy it's probably best to burn another one and post it to you?

On its way to you mate. 👍

If it works (did for me) then feel free to pass it on to someone else when you're done with it.

What a legend , that goes for Moonshine as well. Obviously subscribed to Make BBs great again 🇮🇪

Anyone local to Notts / Derbys who is confident fitting these, I like the idea just not confident enough to take apart my pcm.

Mine is just the basic pcm no sat nav or bose??
