The cling film telltale should prove for sure. It would be unusual for a petrol tank to become pressurised as it means something is inflating it! And quite a bit if its playing a tune!

How odd. What would happen if you put cling film over the fuel filler hole (without cap fitted)? Is it sucked inwards, blown outwards or neither?
If there's no suck or blow then it's not the cap itself but the cap seems to be somehow amplifying noise from elsewhere.
Is there any vibration around the filler cap/tank? Not sure if it'll work but you could try a dowel pressed to the cap and then the pertrol tank without the cap to 'feel' the vibration, like testing a bearing.
Due to an issue with my car I have been looking at AOS failure. They do create smoke but before it becomes really obvious, when they're just beginning to fail, a symptom can be rough running and poor starting. Is the oil filler cap sucking when you remove it on your car?

There are low budget DIY fixes if you can go that route.
Boxster boot badge - remove completely and polish out any residual mark - free
Gas struts - Frazer Parts about £60-£70 all round. They're an easy 10 minute job to swap.
Front shocks - leave alone or wire brush, rust cure and paint.
Exhaust - break joints, add exhaust cement and fit after market clamps, just a few ££.
Gear change - When going from first to second? If so, common issue which eases when warmed up. Consider gearbox oil change and cable lubrication. DIY for cost of oil.
Central locking faults - could be a replacement door lock module (£40 ish secondhand). Intermittent issues I'd leave until they become permanent! Intermittent faults are difficult to diagnose and you could throw money at the car unnecessarily. Depends on whether you can live with the Intermittent faults.

Funny you should ask that 🙂. I've read elsewhere original is the way to go. Do the job once. For my car around £110 but not checked OPC prices. Non originals can be had for around £40 - £60.

It isn't a difficult job. Follow the guide above. All logical. Took me a couple of hours but I could do it in less than half that now.

Yes my car is of the same vintage but like @Photogirl's car it too has had a charmed life and has needed little expenditure. As a consequence I have no comparison quotes. My only comment is my gast has been well and truly fabbered by the quotes. I would be going elsewhere.

Oil and oil filter change today. Checked the old filter. Clean as a whistle. Not a speck of black plastic or glitter. Very pleased.

Cigarette lighter is wired post ignition on early 986s so not live until the ignition is on.

Yes. The card placed at the top behind the airbag is a temporary fix. The airbag is a heavy item 'suspended' on 4 diaphragm 'springs' which separate it from the airbag frame. When the 'springs' fail they can't stop the momentum of the airbag when stopping, going over bumps etc and the horn sounds. Very awkward when you pull up behind someone stopped at traffic lights and give them an unwarranted blast!
Two fixes. One, replace the airbag frame. Two, position O rings either side of the existing diaphragm springs and reassemble. The second option is cheaper and is a tried and tested fix.
There are online how to's.

U pipes don't usually fail but the clamps either end do as do the flange bolts attaching the exhaust to the header. Use exhaust cement for a leak free fix.

Might be worth checking whether you have a small exhaust leak, usually at joints, as this can cause issues with the emissions. Bit of exhaust paste and a tightening up (or replacement of) fastenings usually does the trick. Another vote for an Italian tune up too.

It6s possibly something as simple as the external temperature. When cold I suspect the roof material does not fold as well as it does when warm. Worse still if the material is damp. That the clam settled after a run out suggests the engined warmed the material and vibration settled the clam shell into position.

You mentioned funny noise from the passenger door. Can you describe it? Like gravel being stirred in a metal bucket? If so, then its the regulator.
