  1. Took it for a blast then off for its MoT. It passed with no advisories but not before the garage first refused it for highlights being too low. They adjusted them (£10 charge) and then put it through on a retest (£10 charge). I was told it took three attempts to pass emissions. The engine was as hot as hell when I picked it up!

    Anyway, another year sorted. 😁

  2. Yesterday replaced the indicator switch which had ceased to auto cancel and fixed a random tooting horn using the 'O' ring fix (see youtube). Easy DIY jobs.

Today, got under the car to fix what I thought was a lose manifold to cat pipe flange. It wasn't. It was a lose tubular heat shield. The jubilee clip i used to fix the rattle 12 years ago had disolved! Another jubilee clip did the job. Made a diary note to buy another jubilee clip in 12 years time.

Today the repair parts arrived for my door lock issue with the key moving but not engaging, so tomorrow, all being well, I'll get them fitted and get the lock reinstalled. Whilst I've got the door card off is there any other maintenance that would be helpful to do before reassembling???

You could lubricate the window regulator mechanism.  The cable snaps and also the window can squeak so a bit of lubrication can only help.

Boxob - good hint and input - I found a door actuator on ebay yesterday - I thought the price was good at £27 (below), but the postage to here in France was crazy, at £37, so need to see what I can find here. As a matter of interest, where did you buy yours from? Given it's failed once, I wanted to try to get something that wouldn't be failing again 😃 hopefully the weak point of the design has been adapted 🤞

Bought off a fellow BoXa netter. You need to know whether yours is an 8 or 9 pin actuator. I suspect 9 as I think it's only the early cars that have 8 pins (but as you don't have a factory alarm maybe your car's actuator only had 8 pins?).

Both Audi (TT) and VW (Golf v) make the same actuator which fits with a small mod (perhaps not necessarily on LHD).

Will also have to watch out when I remove the door card to install the new door mechanism 👍

Having replaced a door actuator myself, once you've removed the door card, you'll see a waterproof membrane. It isn't necessary to completely remove the membrane. Just pull it back from the top of the door edge leaving it stuck in place along the bottom and up the sides as far as the actuator.

  6. As above, prevention is better than cure. However, it is possible to make it a little harder to flood the ACU (based on theory and indy advice as I'm yet to action it). The ACU sits in a trough in the floorplan with plenty of head room over it before the bottom of the seat.  By changing to longer bolts each with a spacer it would be possible to raise the ACU by repacing the existing bolts.  Raising the ACU, say, an 1" out of the trough can only help.

Did you say that your main horn has always sounded when the siren was going off? Mine has never done that (98 2.5) and it's always just been the siren.

If that's directed at me then probably yes. The siren is so fecking loud it drowns out everything else so I couldn't be certain the horn was going too. However now that the siren is silent, when I have accidentally tripped the alarm the horn sounds. IMO it's loud enough!

Also, you mentioned a tracker .... I know that it has had one fitted in the past as the paperwork shows a receipt, but have no idea if it's still there or operational. Is there any way to find out I wonder?

Search for it! Under driver's seat?

Finally, managed to take a couple of pics of the siren earlier - not great, but quite difficult to get a suitable angle.

If I did remove the siren, can I literally just disconnect it or would I need to do something else to stop any other impact from the alarm?

The other point I had is that the car was originally provided with keys that simply had one push button which I assume was only for the small bulb in the key i.e. the car didn't have the remote central locking ability - a photo of the key is below, so would welcome comments. Again, it's a 2.5 1998 model. Been stored in a garage for years, so now just getting to know the car all over again! Totally forgot about all the little querks and idiosyncracies, so no doubt a long work list coming up!

Intriguing. I too have a 1998 2.5 986 but with factory alarm and double button key. I was completely unaware, despite having owned my car and having been on the forum since 2010, that there are 2.5 models without a factory alarm or double button key. They must be very rare.

My factory alarm started to randomly sound (or I thought it random) but it was as I described above a failing rechargeable battery in the siren. I unplugged and ultimately removed the siren from the car with the intention of replacing the rechargeable battery. I've never had a double beep or any other issue arise since unplugging the siren. The horn still sounds when the alarm goes off.

The siren battery is made up of a number (6?) of stacked button batteries wrapped in heat shrink and soldered into the siren module. I have not yet found out what batteries they are but when I do I shall replace them. Volvo do a battery stack, available on ebay, but I don't know if it's the same 'power' etc. If anyone does know what battery stack is needed please let me know.

As for battery drain, given you do not have a tracker fitted, then I think @CRCmay have nailed it. As the siren battery draws it's charge from the main battery, when the siren battery fails, then the main battery must be constantly feeding it.

  10. Has the original alarm been disconnected or is the aftermarket alarm additional?  Does the aftermarket alarm have its own independent siren or rely on the factory fitted siren?

The factory siren has its own rechargeable battery. It recharges from the main battery. If the main battery is being drained and, with age the siren battery cannot hold its charge, the system 'thinks' its being tampered with and goes off.

Was a tracker fitted? They've been know to drain the battery.

However I'm with @Daboy3000 I'd have the aftermarket alarm fully removed.

Is everything dry under the passenger seat (under the carpet) as that is where the alarm control unit is positioned.

I'd be more worried about the dog tracking him down and kicking the shyate out of him, it's obviously a tough B'stard.

Haha. OP shouldn't go out a night!

Actually, as it hit by and damaged a Macan my money is on the dog running off and dying of internal injuries around the corner.

  12. Hitting a dog in a car, even if it runs off, is an accident which legally has to be reported to the police.  Failing to report within 24hours is an offence - potentially a £5,000 fine!

Hopefully noone else reported it nor was it caught on CCTV or dashcam.

If you do report it to the police then it follows you must inform your insurance company.

So, was anyone looking or likely to report it?

I had to look into this a while back when a deer jumped into the side of the car. Hitting a deer is not an accident.
