  1. After cancelling yesterday's MoT due to an untimely exhaust leak, I spent part of yesterday fixing the nearside exhaust flange. Easy. But the offside not so, so I've left it for another day! It's not leaking. Some good news, the manifold bolts look clean and sound. 

    MoT rebooked for today. Pass. 🙂

  2. My car came with one from the factory but was sold off by a previous owner - so they didn't think it worth keeping.

    Downsides:

    you have to decide whether to install it hood up or hood down. The hood doesn't fold with it fitted;

    any dirty object (e.g bike, skis) on the rack will drip either onto the roof or interior.

    That said I'd have one to restore it to the car but can't think I'd have occassion use it.

    Received wisdom is not to do that. It'll not be 100% waterproof and any water let in will remain in the bag with repeat cycles of vapour/ condensation. There is an aftermarket waterproof container but it's quite expensive and in the US.

    I've wondered if there's enough room under the seat to raise the ACU using some rubber spacers e.g door stops. If so then that extra 2.5cm would be enough to lift the ACU out of any water except in the worst cases.

    From a quick search seems like it was 2mm thick on the Z8

    You would then have to find somebody that would fit it for you, which would probably be even more difficult then sourcing the material itself. 

    I take it you don't like the look of the aftermarket glass screen hoods either then, or is there some other reason you don't want a glass hood.? 

    I must admit that while my hood isn't as new, it doesn't look anywhere near 23 years old, so seems a shame to bin it as it would probably last another screen replacement. 

     

    I don't like the letterbox look of the glass screen on the pre facelift hood frame.  A TPU screen would be worth trying IMO. I expect about £200 to fit once sourced.

    It was me and Technow. We did get close but not quite there. A supplier said he had it, Technow bought some, but it wasn't. He fitted it anyway so search ended.

  6. If you can find a supplier replace the plastic screen with one made of TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane). Optically as good a glass, folds in any temperature (no need to chop) and resistent to abrasion. As used on the BMW Z8. I've tried to find a supplier, even BMW, without success unless bulk buying. If your interested and do find a supplier let me know.

    There is a joint between the floor carpet and the rear firewall carpet. Wi th h the seat forward it's possible to get a hand in the gap and pull up the floor carpet enough to slide a newspaper under it. Once the news paper is in place stand on the floor carpet to squeeze out the water from the under carpet foam. Repeat. Eventually the foam will not have excess water. Then use a rolled or folded newspaper to raise the floor carpet to allow air to circulate.

    I'm a little late to the party but I can, from my experience, confirm that an exhaust leak (even a small one) will adversely affect the lambda reading. My only MoT failure was on emissions. Although I had replaced all the exhaust clamps and sleeves I had not used any exhaust paste. Remaking the joints with paste solved the problem and got the car a pass.

    Took probably 20 minutes to remove the old adn juts about same time to instal the new one - not so bad for first timer :)

    You make it sound easy. So many report it as a pig of a job especially removing and re-attaching one particular hose. Is there a trick to it?

    The passenger side was a doddle but the drivers side was a little more complicated due to the wiring harness for the lights etc, so over engineered, bot on  now and looks OEM fresh and new.

    My driver's side vent had partially collapsed. I was able to reassemble it with a pair of long nose pliers through the vent. The vertical and horizontal vanes clip together. My guess is air freshers or phone holders clipped to the vents cause the problem.

    Did you find all the pieces? If so you might be able to reassemble them and sell them on?

    Are you sure that's a fault? Earlier models do not close the windows as part of the roof raising operation. Mine a 1998 model doesn't.

    is it the bearing, well, I had a very similar experience when a bearing was going home on a Shogun?

    thought I'd use the car today to induce a bit more wear possibly. Now not sure..............noise seems to have changed to more of a groaning noise. Need to investigate more tomorrow.

     

    In my experience a worn wheel bearing sounds like a rumble.

    If it helps I remember: 22lock (two to lock). 

    It's been posted on here that on the 987 (maybe other models too) it's easy to inadvertently operate the key remote whilst in the pocket and walking away from the car.

    You've checked water is not getting in the cab even with the windows closed? I ask because I had this problem on a Ford. The front drain holes blocked and water got in via the pollen filter. I got back to the car to find all windows and sun roof open and it tipping it down. I contacted my a Ford garage and was told it's a safety feature. If the car goes into water the windows and sunroof open to aid escape. I dont know whether Porsches do the same.
