I believe climate change is a real threat to life on earth, but I'm not convinced that it is essentially man made and I do not believe that token reductions in CO2 emissions by wealthy countries is the answer.

Me too !    Can I say that 😁

If we are to cope with natural warming cycles then we sure need to change our ways. No water, you are dead in a week or less.

  2. Welcome Bob, you are clearly enjoying the car, great. Your question is to technical for me but I'm sure someone here can help. We love pictures here too, so please post a couple up of your car when you have a moment.  You will need to use a hosting site like flickR or Imgur, good luck.😁

Hi, just noticed wrong date 😄 2003

    Boxster S

So you have a 986 Boxster S as its a 2003 car. This car has side lights. Not running lights. Side lights do need to be switched on, running lights usually come on automatically when the ignition is switched on. As you explain you have changed the bulbs and checked fuses it hard to suggest further simple fixes. One  complication would be if this car has been fitted with after market running lights that are now giving problems. I would imagine any decent local garage would be able to help as there is nothing special about the way Porsche lights work, good luck, do let us all know how you get on.

  4. Welcome, a Boxster 986 does not have running lights. You have posted in the 986 section, what model Boxster do you have ???

  5. If you go for a high miles 987.2 they are are due an extra big service at 12 years old, which includes a gearbox oil change and a few odd filters. This is all itemised in the Porsche service book but you aslo have to check the extra items at four and eight years which are  in addition to the regular two year items. Every two years or 20k miles, which ever sooner, is the service interval. Low mile cars will often be skipped on interval. A 12 year service will be a good bit, Cotswold Porsche may give you a current price if you want a pointer. I recently sold a 75000k 2011 987.2 for just £500 over your budget. It was due the big service this August and my price took this into account. I dont think you have to be outright lucky to get a good car. Just do your homework as you are clearly doing. I used to cover around 7-8000 miles p.a. in my cars and I would allow about £1500 p.a. for bills if you use a garage rather than DIY. Four new tyres for a Boxster can be 1k 😁

Btw 986 service is 12000k or every 12 months.

Mine stays in my pocket... not helpful, I know. 😶

I empathise. If I could create a route in Google maps and use said route on the PCM my phone would stay in my pocket too. I suspect I may now be told how I can use something 'in car'  for that task but unless its as simple and cheap as eating chips it will not appeal. 😁

  7. Here is mine. Magnetic holder grips a vent vane with a screw tightening adjustable crocodile clip. The magnet is on a ball and socket affair with a nut to turn to fix in the desired position. Best vent holder I have had, solid. Phone plugs into the  socket in glove box, very neat. Easy to see at a glance, and easy to adjust for glare. Not in the way. If you need to touch the screen you can brace your hand on top of the gear leaver. Halfords best!!!  A tenner, maybe fifteen quid. Very slightly obscures PCM screen, but no buttons or controls. I had this in my 987 for three years, happy. (must get a red or silver USB cable 🤣)

even if the rebuild was done really well I think I'd always worry about any rattles or noises I hear.

I think that is the decider. Porsche Paranoia can spoil the enjoyment of a perfectly innocent car if you loose a sensible perspective on possible failures. If you are a person that hears he knocks, taps and squeaks I can imagine a catS would be more a nightmare every drive than driving a dream. I think many would concur  much better value  would be had with a well maintained high miler.

  9. On the 987.2 with PDLS you can set the option for the LED - DRLs to be on with the ignition but without dipped beams or sides/ rears on.  Does this help?

  10. I see you have a 981 however on the front drains on a 986 it is possible for the end of a cleaning rod to be deflected under one of the undertrays as it emerges from the drain so you can not see the end of the cleaning rod. Then there comes a point when you cant push the rod down further. It gave me a bit of a puzzle  one afternoon.

  11. My 987.2 (2011 manual) are also crazed, but not as badly as some I've seen. The lights were like this when I purchased the car 3 years ago. Does not appear to have got worse,  although its hard to say for sure as the crazing is not that noticeable on mine. No  theories as to why this happens, but as the OP noted, this does not seem to happen to other cars. The rear lenses on my daughters 2010 Fiesta are as new.
