Looks like a few issues you are working on in there @Nobbie

That was a couple of years ago when I had a slow coolant leak which turned out to be that fractured pipe going into the coolant valve for the tip. Also needed to replace that metal pipe which was close to failure from rust. All good fun😀. Still have an issue of it not showing ‘P’ on dashboard when lever is in P position, so need to start in neutral, but I can live with that. I though it was the multifunction switch until I couldn’t find one on the car🤣

Got car back last night and done several short trips this morning seems fine so far no blown fuses and no cutting out so looks like new fuel pump relay may of done the trick but will monitor for a few days defo sounds good with the dansk backbox and top down

Give it a damn good thrashing this weekend and you’ll be back in love with it👍

I might be putting up a drive out in the Peaks if you fancy coming along.

Thanks very much @map, appreciate the reply and advice. As from the map, the Aberdeen area isn't blessed with many specialist independents, but I do know some good solid local garages so will start there.

    Cheers

These cars are not exotic, so I would go with a solid local garage. If you’re worried about a lack of previous history, I would get an oil test done when the oil is changed. This will give you an indication if there is any undue wear by identifying levels of bearing metals in the oil. I’ve used these before. They send you a little bottle and a prepaid envelope. https://www.millersoils.co.uk/oil-analysis/

Post the result up here and we’ll give you a range of opinions on what it means🤣

I have read of varying opinions on the need to change the auto fluid. One train of thought is that if it’s working fine, then leave it. A quick google found this in reference to the Audi fitted with a similar gearbox. Note the post about issues arising from changing fluid after a long time.

  4. Are you doing lots of short journeys in it so the oil isn’t getting hot enough to get rid of moisture etc. If so, this would explain the sludging and you should go to annual oil changes. I suspect poor oil condition probably accounts for at least some of the early failure of the IMS bearing and won’t do any others much good. If the car has run like this for many years and there is now metal in the oil, I would not be driving down to France until it had been checked out properly, cam deviations and oil pressure. Did they keep any of the old oil or the filter?

I put a pair of yokohamas on the back of my car, no P2,3 or 4 available at the time and am not sure if I really regret it.  The front need changing and I am naturally gravitating to the P4, but honestly what should I be shodding my car with?

The Yoko on the back seem okay, not problem with grip compared to the the P2s I replaced.  Any Yoko horror stories?

Is there an unwritten rule that Michelin or Pirelli P0 only, or are there other good tyres for these special little cars?

No, there are a few people who insist that only N rated should be used, but these are generally not people who know much about tyres and are just regurgitating what they’ve heard. The Michelin PS4 does get very good reviews, not so sure about the Pirelli’s, a bit more mixed from memory. Just replaced my rear Khumos with another set of Khumos as they work really well for the spirited driving I do. Don’t last that long, but as I only do 3-4K a year it’s not really an issue. I doubt you’ll regret the PS4 on the front and I don’t see an issue with different brands front and rear although some will be horrified.

  6. I doubt there is any cost effective mod that would boost actual power by a noticeable amount, but there are a few that will give the sensation of more power which is probably more worthwhile. A ‘Sprint Booster’ on the throttle will make it feel more lively by reducing the pedal travel for full throttle. Tubular manifolds off eBay with a exhaust bypass mod on the backbox or Carnewal would make it sound much more alive.

Mine’s only a 2.5 and it feels like a race car with the manifolds and sports exhaust😀

  7. Hopefully they’ve kept a sample of oil to send of for analysis. That should tell you a bit more about where the metal may have come from. If the garage have said to keep driving it then I assume there is not much metal involved. Might be worth getting them to check the cam deviations are within spec as a couple of failure modes would show up on this such as chain guides worn through to the metal and IMS bearing breaking up.

  8. Keep an eye out on eBay for a set of tubular manifolds. I think they all come from the same factory, but are rebranded by resellers. Got mine for £130 a couple of years ago when my manifold cracked. They are a straight forward replacement and fit the cats fine. You just need to ensure the power steering pipe is secured away from the pipes as they protrude more than the originals. Also use OE gaskets rather than the weird spongy aluminium ones that come with them as these need retightening after use and leak.

  9. This is a common issue on the 986 where there is a foam rubber sheet glued to the inside of the panel under the vent which traps moisture and eventually rusts and bubbles straight through under the vent. Maybe the issue didn’t come to light early enough to fix it on the 987.

  10. You can just use deionised water if it’s only a litre or so, these take about 18 litres from memory, so you not diluting it that much. Maybe add some UV dye so you can see where it’s leaking from with a UV torch. You can get kits on eBay for £10-15. Just seen your reply and I’d keep an eye on it as they shouldn’t need topping up at all. Front coolant pipes on these are a known weak point that start to weep. Better to sort sooner rather than later.

    Hi everybody,

Has anyone on here fitted the Design911 exhaust package which includes throttle body, IPD plenum and Air Filter. Just wondering if this a worthwhile upgrade. Thanks for any replies.

In reality you’re unlikely to notice much difference, except maybe slightly more noise from the intake. If you want more power, buying an S seems the most cost effective upgrade, if you want more noise, buy an exhaust bypass or Carnwal mod.
