Well, new S4 battery fitted and still won't start so after checking the alternator which seems fine, it appears to be a knackered starter motor...oh well, off to my mechanic on Monday....looking through the reams of paperwork I got with her in 2020 I'm sure it's the original starter motor.

    Time will tell I guess.

That’s disappointing. Hope a new starter motor sorts it.

  2. If you’re taking off the arch liners, have a really good inspection of all the brake lines for corrosion. Mine never even got an MOT advise on brake pipe corrosion, but it almost fell apart at the point where it bends around the inner arch at the front.

The biggest point made here is the interior being special. Obviously as loads of people already have fitting the gts diffuser to a standard 981 is very inexpensive & Porsche offer on their website a price to have the design pack supplied and fitted giving you the GTS front end.

So would you spend £50k + on a GTS with leather interior knowing it's inferior to ones that have the full GTS package therefore always take longer to sell or £30k on a well spec'd S with the same interior & a further £3-4k at Porsche to add the design pack and actually bump up the value of that car to circa £40k (today's market).

@daz05 perfect example of this with also the enjoyment of making his car very special. I'd love to know in comparison what your car owes you.

You’ve almost tempted me to buy this. Seems a lot of car for the money, only thing letting it down is it’s a manual.

  4. We are now in an era where you can get 5% on a five year savings account, so the GTS would have to depreciate almost £4K less than the S if you have the cash lying around to buy it. If you’re borrowing then it will be more. From a purely cash POV I don’t think the less depreciation logic stacks up in general, although in this case it may as you mention that the GTS is fully loaded and if you keep the miles low it could be much more desirable than a fairly average S.

  5. Be careful removing the bolts on the coil packs, mine were Allen key rather than torx, but I have heard of people rounding off the Allen bolts due to poor access. Worth tapping the Allen key in with a small hammer before attempting to turn to make sure it’s properly seated.

  6. You should be fine with that one, 65k isn’t a lot on these. Common expenses on these are the coolant pipes (check history to see if they’ve been done) at about £800, gear cables can snap, about £300 and replacement discs and pads - upto £1k at a main dealer for all round, but much less at an Indy. Checking the MOT history, front discs were mentioned in 2019, so probably got replaced soon after and clean sheets after that. Looks like a good un👍

whereabouts are you? might be worth putting in your profile as makes it easier to recommend garages etc.

  7. I’ve got a 986 with 160k on it, so am well aware of how well they take the miles, but they all look very strong money for a car you’ll struggle to sell on. The cayman which has 155k and is cat N and they still want £20k🤣

Merc paddles Sounds like a very good thing.

Is there a how to do this?

This is how I did (page 6) it on a 986 four years ago and has been faultless, even managed to get the position just right. Not sure if the RS60 uses Canbus for the switches, if so, I have no idea how that would work.

If it comes through then great, my ebay dronemeister exhaust was £120 secondhand which i thought was a good deal! And after a year or so the drone does go down a bit/you learn to drive around it...

I don’t even notice any drone on mine at motorway speed after 10k, even at the 2700rpm resonance.

After two days thrashing around Scotland, the damage my grills have picked up, looking at some of them, definitely would be looking at a Condenser!!!!

Yes, sorry about that. Still haven’t worked out which bit came off after that heavy landing🤣 Sure it wasn’t important😀

  11. Don’t suppose you got any of the old oil? A oil analysis might give you some pointers. Could be a main or big end bearing failure which could be diagnosed by the type of metal present. Not sure why a stretched chain would result in metal in the oil🤔

  12. I think prices are on the way down now, particularly for Boxsters as the end of summer looms. At 140k I suspect a price starting with a 5 will be needed to shift it at all, let alone quickly which might require starting with a 4. Good luck. I bought mine at 140k, but many will baulk at the mileage.

£260 sounds tempting if that were to include VAT and delivery.

Amazon lists the Pierburg pump at £161 but would guess there would be complications. More reliable suppliers would be around £190.

Still unsure which way to go. There seems to be no end of different "manufacturers" offering 2,3 and 5 year warranties with their pumps so they must all sell quite a few For most cars, indies will just use whatever pattern part is on the shelf from a local motor factor and warranty their wirk if it fails.

If it was a £30k car there would be no question, but for a £7k beater with nearly 93k on the clock that does 3k miles a year is it worth the extra?

A lot depends on how you drive your car. Mine was on it’s original pump when I got it at 140k, but was mostly used for commuting from what I can tell. I used it for thrashing around at high revs and it gave up the ghost pretty soon. I replaced it with a Laso pump at £150 which was also OE fitment and it has survived a further 3 years of abuse. I did also fit an under drive pulley to reduce the stress on the ancillaries from enthusiastic driving. Definitely get a composite impeller as you don’t want it grinding into your block and sending bits of metal through your cooling system when it fails.

  14. Not sure why they’re quoting to remove the gearbox as you can replace the pipe without if you use cunifer which can be manipulated Ito shape. You would need to remove your Zeintech though. Assume first place agree.

Looking for my first Boxster ideally an "S" and I need some advise.

Looking for something under 8 grand to buy and have seen quite a few advertised. When I started looking I dismissed the tiptronic gearbox ones.

However I have seen a few nice cars that are tiptronic, they seem to be a little cheaper or better value. Would you recommend me one for my budget or should I hold out for a manual?

One car I was interested in had a IMS guard. A button on the dash. and a light and buzzer warning that lets you know if the oil has metal filings in it, has anyone got any info on these, do they actually work?''

    Thanks for any advice.

I was looking for a manual as I’d never owned an auto before, but a nice tip came up and I bought it. Never regretted it. Mine is a weekend car and I’ve fitted flappy paddles to it which I find great for enthusiast driving in ‘manual’ mode. If I’m going through town I just put it in auto.

Thanks Nobbie, had the coil packs replaced about 3k mls ago so I’ll go with the O2 sensor which doesn’t sound as expensive! Just got Mrs Greyanglia on my back as I blew a lot of money on a brand new VW Campervan last year and they are delightful money pits!

    Cheers,

    Michael

May even be a connector wasn’t pushed home correctly when the coil packs were done. When I did mine they were fine initially, but must have worked loose over time.

    Hi all,

Just had my engine warning light come on today with visit workshop message. It’s a 2008 987.1 2.7 with 64k mls Just had new condensers fitted a couple of weeks ago but can’t think it’s connected. Guess I need to get my local specialist to carry out a diagnostic. Any early thoughts to enable me to sleep soundly tonight? 😀

    Tia.

Could be a dodgy coil pack or O2 sensor, probably nothing too serious.

  18. I had exactly this on my 107 a few weeks back, suddenly clutch pedal seemed to slip to floor and bite point remained right at the bottom until the next day when I couldn’t disengage the clutch at all. Turned out to be a failed lug on the clutch release bearing. Has the clutch been stiff recently? May have put extra strain on the bearing.
