In the last few weeks I have got it's MOT sorted, considered SORNing it but haven't after a few drives out for food shopping, including today, 5°c in the sun, roof down, even a wave from an R8 driver!

Quick wash and vacuum out when back and I go and ruin it all by thinking I'll replace the boot lid struts that are starting to fail, that'll be a quick and easy job!

Cue one of the little clips being an absolute bastard, a slip of the screwdriver and a scratch. I'm mortified. Off to drown my sorrows in gin.

Good to hear you got the emissions sorted, what did it turn out to be?

High emmission engines are penalised heavily, thats why the 718 4 pot has been such a success in China

How come RR/Bentley do so well out there?  I would guess the Chinese mega wealthy, of which there are plenty these days, are not too concerned with emission penalties.

The tester said the cats are ok as the HC and CO readings were ok?

Sorry to hear your of your 2nd failure, as Ed said check the system for leaks. Rev the car and get someone to stick their hand over the exhaust and track your way around it looking for sooty blow marks. Its probably the original exhaust which in itself is amazing  that they last as long as they do.

Fitted newly refurbished wheels and new tyres ...

    IMG-2063.jpg

    Very much a classic look.

I had both my wheel sets Road Force balanced and it has completely resolved the vibration issues.  It's like driving a brand new car now!  Well worth the additional expense and the time taken to get to my nearest specialist.

That looks lovely....what colour is she?

Last year it went through on 1.03 but it had failed first time on the 2nd fast idle, I only know this though because it's on my car app. I never actually got a fail cert (which I think they are supposed to give to you also) so they must've done something to get it through.

I had a reoccurring CEL at the time on bank 2. Replacing the pre cat 02 sensor sorted that and the light has never come on since. If the other one needed replacing would it throw the light again?

My guess is it would.  I would tend to replace both if one failed as a matter of course tbh as good practice so it might be worth replacing.  According to google the reason a car fails with high lambda readings is post combustion air leaks even if they are very small. I would check the exhaust system right up to manifold for any leakage. Did I read that you used Lee at Cotswold Porshe recently?  It might be worth getting his advice as he's very knowledgeable and helpful.

It was warm and went straight in for its test.

Different place though, the place I took it to last year wanted it for 8am and had it all day which meant it was cold. Only scraped through last year on the second go.  I put it down to it being cold and a known faulty 02 sensor which has since been replaced.

I know it doesnt have any exhaust leaks as Cotswold confirmed that only 2 months ago. So all a bit of an unwelcome surprise 😔

Not good sounds like a new cats required 😬 Perhaps the Governments tightened the rules in trying to get the lead burners off the road.....

It's better yes, I wouldn't say night and day but does feel more planted. Front tyres is my next job. They were worn excessively on the inside edge on the front which at least was explained today by the toe being way off.

Sounds like the way the old tyres have worn new will also make a difference 👍

Wheel alignment today after some front suspension work. Does this look ok now?

    9rIP3zG.jpg

The key thing is how does it drive? Better than before? Its very hard to get them all in the green. GT One couldn't with mine after a suspension refresh but it was lightyears better to drive and my tyres which were new have worn evenly.

  9. 12 hours ago, Halfordwill said:

The alignment was done before I bought the car and no work has been done at the rear. The wear is even across the tyre and I run them at 38 psi as recommended.
    maybe an alignment is required

There’s something wrong, those tyres should last longer than 7K miles even if you were booting it every time you drove it. I’ve done 14K on my Goodyear Asymmetric 3’s with no sign of wear and I don’t hang around. I did have a geo check done at the same time as the tyres were fitted though.

  10. Fitted new Bosch wiper blades, passengers is curved never realised that and a pound extra for the drivers spoiler version. £22.50 from Halfrauds with trade card.  Also treated screen to a coat of rainex, nothing like the sound (or lack of!) of new wiper blades....

Thanks for all the comments I'll see if I can get down to them at some point.

All you can is ask and appeal to their better professional nature.  As you said all the others are good (make that point to them) and so it must be a bit of contamination on the one wheel........good luck

I had a lesson/masterclass with @Patt in headlight restoration today. He is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and very patient (he makes a nice cup of tea too). It was a pleasure to meet him and I'm sooo pleased with the results 😊

He's a moron. His traffic plans have basically made London come to a standstill in place. 20 mph limits on main roads, cycle lanes taking up half a road (Embankment is a mess now and is a constant gridlock) etc. He needs to realise that to lessen the pollution the traffic needs to move, not be constantly hampered by expensive "calming" measures.

I worked out one day the amount of buses that go up East Ham high street on a daily basis and it was easily into four figures. These are mainly old, belching pieces of junk that are going through a major high street. How is that healthy? Why do we have to have so many going to roughly the same place?

Are the buses not the new routemaster which I would’ve thought met latest emission targets?

The problem with the bill is that it doesn't change anything. If you have a taxi for instance they're exempt, buses are exempt, trains are exempt etc etc. The only people it actually affects are the average person who if anything just travels one way to work and the same back. Basically the main polluters aren't affected in the slightest, if it made the travel operators get their ass in gear and stop running empty buses and we got rid of crappy old taxis off the road then i'd be all for it but it doesn't.

Ahhh but there you have the strategy with the average motorist driven off the road (excuse the pun lol) with surcharges, buses wont be empty and as for the taxi's (assume the black cab version) well they have Khan in their back pocket as they've driven UBER out with anti competitive behavior.  I think the charges will apply to UBER drivers as talking to them they will have to add it to their fares meaning they will not be able to compete in London, so will move out to the suburbs.  Another positive side affect.  Eventually only the rich and famous will be able to drive around London,  maybe that's the plan.......Sad really as I was born and bred there. There again we could have a change of Mayor........

Tbh i wouldn't worry too much as the ULEZ only covers where the Congestion Charge is at the moment. It's only if Sadiq I hate all cars Khan gets his idiot bill through that it will become an issue and there's plenty of opposition to it.

The opposition won’t stand a chance a girl with acute asthma died (RIP) allegedly as a result of living more or less on the south circular. Unfortunately we live in a world of reactionary,  scare mongery, no hard fact  based politics and the masses believe what they’re told  or can’t be bothered to oppose it...and the motorist is seen as the Antichrist these days and rich pickings..

So I finally got to help with the build of my own engine... 👍

    Did some of this:

    8VnTpFy.jpg

    Then some more:

    vq3TUXr.jpg

    A bit of this...

    t8JGwBY.jpg

And also almost all of these:

    DA07u4W.jpg

Brilliantly enjoyable and I now understand why these flat format engines take so long to assemble - at one point it felt like we were building it from the inside out....!

It's not finished and you can bet I'll be there for as much of it as I can.

Great stuff, what caused the rebuild?

Did you not see @Patt roof on his old 986 at Blackbushe? That was from Carhoodwarehouse circa £600.

I did but on the CHW one the glass window looks a little 'letter box' in shape to me.  The BAS one looks to retain the window more like the original and the K Baggs one that @Bike Loon posted looked very good quality and the window looks bigger.  As CHW are not doing any discount £695 for members I thought I'd shop around.
