That looks superb, do they do them for gen 2’s?? When you say “use different launchers”, forgive me, what does that mean and is it easy to do?

if you don’t want to get a 4G card, I assume it works via Bluetooth/USB to connect your phone?

Signs point to yes :) re Gen2, one example below. Search Aliexpress.

The launcher refers to the Android OS look and feel - the user interface.

Check the specs on any particular unit you want to buy re how it connects I see different specs on the units depending which one we're talking about e.g. wired/"wireless" (probably means Bluetooth)

I swapped out the Pioneer unit the car came with and replaced it with one of the Aliexpress Android units with full Carplay.  I've been very impressed with it - the screen is miles better than the Pioneer unit and it looks more OEM, the physical buttons and control knobs are much more usable as well.

That actually looks like it belongs there. Nice.

  4. The end-game here is to get the car fixed.

    Pick your approach.

Personally I'd be negotiating directly with the people who can do that.

It all comes down to £.

Yes in an ideal world they pick up the tab.

We don't live in an ideal world and you have to fight to get what you want.

My thinking re the part number chat with a parts dept is that if they turn out to be the same part numbers /part number family which necessitated the GT4 recall then I think that is an interesting fact to throw into the conversation.

Latest update. Porsche GB and the centre will take up 40% of the bill - I will have to contribute £5,000.

I have indicated that I'm not happy with this given that the GT4 models which had the same gearbox were subject to a recall. At the time of purchase, I was sold a vehicle with a gearbox that had a known fault. I have asked whether the OPC believes it would be beneficial for me to contact Porsche GB directly.

I also asked whether the box to be fitted is new or reconditioned exchange, whether it is a modified design (if not, will it strip 3rd gear again in another 40k miles) and more questions regarding stock availability, lead times etc. The car has been with them now for 7 weeks.

Phone up an OPC parts dept and ask them to confirm the part numbers replaced in the GT4 and the current part number in your car (by VIN).

  6. As per previous posts if the larger 987 MAF housing is in play then it could be the ECU is getting confused by airflow results due to the larger diameter tube.

A code reader and review of the MAF live values could confirm that.

The link two posts back has references to keeping the 987 MAF housing and reducing it (pvc pipe basically). See posts 299 and 303.

Or reuse the 986 MAF housing.

Or keep the 987 MAF housing and flash the 986 ECU with a revised MAF table, I've seen some references to using a 996 mapping.

In uk spec cars there is a lever in each headlight shell (have to remove them to get to it ) it’s a simple mechanical up down arrangement.  Labeled weirdly (something like L and T).  Both halogen and xenon have them but in different locations.

effect is to mask the drivers side flip “up” on the inside edge - if you are on the other side of the road (like when we cross the channel into Europe) it prevents dazzle.  I wouldn’t it reduces range more ranges the pattern )

i think there is a write up on the Porsche club GB site.  Let me dig out the links

EDIT - they appear to have updated the site - and in the process lost the most useful info - there's a fe other posts around - ignore all the "PDLS" discussions - it's the same ( lever is in the xenon place for pdls ) .

Its in the handbook for UK spec cars - I don't have an electonic copy - sorry

This help ? See post 7

    I'm in North Leeds.

Given that I've just had the key done by the OPC, I could theoretically call them back and say "it hasn't worked on the boot!" Might be able to get them to check it for free (I know, hold your laughter...)

Don't ask, don't get but I'd be expecting a bill there for something they may view as additional diagnosis/work.

Another update - and thanks for all the responses.

My sales guy rang. The SA had given the worst-case scenario - probably in hindsight it's the best thing to do. Belfast have rasied a ticket with Porsche UK initially stating how thoroughly decent a chap I am (ahem....!) having bought three Porsches from them etc etc and given the known fault in this type of gearbox would they contribute. I will update when I know more. I have no issue with contributing - it's over 7 years old, no warranty and hasn't been serviced by the dealer in a while.

The known issue is that instead of the gears being located by keys and slots, they get welded on - the weld breaks, the gear spins freely etc. Well documented on GT4 models - this has the same 6-speed box. Just that there aren't that many manual 718s.

For going down the 2nd hand route - who knows whether the replacement box would be just about to do the same thing. Cheaper to wait for claims than to issue a recall, I suppose.

    How's this looking ?

Took it out for a spin down to the shops this morning and realised just how dirty it is (again) - we have builders doing renovations on houses either side of us at the moment and its covered in sawdust and dirt - so that's a job for the weekend :(

Might as well drive it some more now it's dirty :)

  11. I’d suggest get it on a decent Porsche aware diag reader, see if any codes are reported before throwing more cash at the parts cannon.

Assuming the cabin switch works with it maybe the alarm control unit isn’t working with that rear release.

Don’t know if it would report anything in that event but that’s where I’d start.

Big clue would be a part number update.  Maybe the latest pet diagrams for the car would give an insight.

    -G or -GX (for exchange)

    Assuming a start at A, that's a few revs.
