Yeah, but using the 3 gauges from the 986.
Would have like to replace the gauge faces for the volt and oil gauge, so it had the correct Boxster font.
I'd never noticed the font difference before in this mod, but at least it is symmetrical with the two outside gauges. I guess keeping the Boxster gauges avoids some (or all?) of the EEPROM reprogramming and calibration/scale issues for the speedo.

Wrench size 18, it's not a typical size. It caught me off guard the first time.
18mm on bolts, 19mm on the tuning fork nut IIRC.

That's the 996 instrument upgrade then.

Not so much what I've done, but it is its 24th Birthday.

The rear was 'massively out'. And you won't be scrubbing your front and rear tyres anymore.

Hopefully you shouldn’t have a problem. Mine came out easily and I’m sure they were the original 22 year old items.
Mine were fine too at the same age.

Got mine from a breakers getting on for 5years ago for £230 incl the end covers. Bear in mind you can sell on the old stalks too, got £75 for my 3 stalk set IIRC to someone on here.

Just hope it stays captive...
Torque is 160Nm both ends.

So, just "make sure you get the right cluster for your engine". Perfectly logical.
... and transmission. And range of model years.

Is that "for an S", implying the cluster is somehow more complex? Or is it just saying make sure you get the right cluster for the right engine, which makes sense, eg redline/max speeds are different?
No, calibration of the speedo. The scale is different between 2.5/2.7 and 3.2 versions.

Can these be retrofitted to a 2001 2.7?
That specific part number in a 2002 onwards for a manual S with OBC.
There is a whole minefield for part numbers for there varying from the colour of the dial faces to with or without OBC.
I's recommend downloading the Porsche parts cat for a 986 from here and looking at sections 906-01 and 906-02. For a 01 2.7 and to get OBC you need a 01- instrument set and M481, M659 characteristics. On top of this you will need stalks with the lower stalk on the left side to control the OBC (and if you are going that far why not retro fit cruise control too, if you want it, as that needs the 4 stalk version of column stalks. Porsche Classic Genuine Parts Catalogue - Porsche Great Britain
A number of indys advertise retrofitting OBC and Cruise as a service if teh above info is too baffling to sort through, it takes a while to get used to the parts cat.
-
And of course 5speed (black) vs 6 speed (white) dials and tip and tip S versions too.
I have OBC on a segment display on a 2000...

Yes, it would need to be the newer 2002 onwards instrument cluster to match your car, not the one linked to which is an early model one.

If you have access to a copy of the 101 Projects for your Boxster book, or go to the Pelican website Porsche Boxster 996 Gauge Cluster Upgrade - 986 / 987 (1997-08) - Pelican Parts Technical Article there is a swap to 996 instruments which would have to deal with similar issues.

From what I recall, yes. I know you can create a custom baffle but I don't think I did that.
Was it a Bose car?

I'm half tempted to pull my door apart. I could've sworn I fitted 6.5 albeit 12 or more years back.
Did you use the black plastic acoustic boxes from the OE installation?

My after market 5 1/4” fitted snug in my boxes.
Just had to slot the mounting holes. Some will fit straight in.

Glad you've come up with 13cm/5¼", thought I was going mad. I could be the PCD of the fixing points that 6½".
Pioneer TS-G1331i were fitted to the doors along with Alpine SXE-0825S in the rear storage top box and Pioneer TS-G1031i in the dash. I added 4ohm ballast resistors to the dash and door speakers and connected them to the head unit as front speakers, the Alpines as rear. This way both speaker sets present the same resistance to each of the channels on the head unit.

CoC was definitely free back in '22 when I got mine for this process.

Looks like quite a lot of damage to elastic and cords in there. Have you have the plastic ball ends on the roof mechanism break at any time?

The top mount is also made by Sachs for Porsche. Look for their number 802 553, if you get one you will see where the Porsche part number was removed before the final factory plating process... You can get them for around £75 upwards for a pair i.e. about half the price listed above although I note that includes the top bearing. Top bearings as long as you clean them up and check they are not pitted or corroded can be regreased and go again.
Also bear in mind the prices in the list shown are ex VAT.

Bosch Sabre blades are also good for the hard steel in these Porsche bolts. Done 4 bolts and 3 drop links with just one blade.

You'll only retain minuscule amount of the old fluid in the ABS (assuming that is what you mean) and that that there is has not been exposed to air or heat. I did a whole replacement for all the hard lines under the car along with new flexi hoses and overhauled calipers. Flushed through with new fluid from the reservoir through the whole system, then bled it in the standard way and have had no problems.
What have YOU done to your 987 today
