Popped the stereo out as no power. As suspected a loose connector. So tight getting it all back in. While it was out, connected the illumination and ran a aux cable in for the iPod. Squeezed it all back in and working.

Finished changing out all 6 lamps in the headlamps to night breakers and led side lights.

Bought a second hand roof relay and done the safety removal mod. Fitted, all good.

Went out for a nice blurt about with the iPod banging out. Nearly home and the stereo powered off again. FFS! 😭😂

So, I will have to pull that out again and sort. Might have to get the console delete out and try and feed cables back when fitting. 🙄

When removing and installing the stereo, you may find it much easier if you remove the heater controller first.

This is only 4 screws and the plugs on the back and will massively help.

Question, how long have you worked on 986s to have such an impressive knowledge. Your analysis blows me away every time you are tagged in anything!

Haha, no, not at all Jimbo. There are far, far more knowledgeable folk on here than me.

I may not even be correct with my diagnosis in this instance but sticking lifters is exceptionally common on Porsches that have not been used for some time. I am working on one at the moment that has not been used for 2-3 weeks and that has it. I recently had a 987 G2 and after being parked up for a month, that also had it.

Take yours for a good drive and report back.

Thanks to @1/2CWT & @K.I.T.T. For your replies, here is an update. We tried to refit ball nozzle into the existing part but it blew out again, so my indie where the car was being serviced & MOT tested fitted a new one from Porsche. He fitted it without taking the front bumper cover off, all done by taking the headlamp out. The cost of the new part from Indie was £120-06 plus vat.

Once they have popped off once, they rarely stay in position.

Yes, all easily accessible with the headlight assembly out. Tbh, they are very problematic for leaks, as such, I sometimes get asked to cap the feed hose.

    Glad you have sorted yours.

  4. You have more than one problem here Sir.

You door handle / lock is broken (mechanical) issue and your key is also stopped responding with the vehicle.

Would I be correct in thinking that the fob was working and and you use the car regularly and as such never use the key in the door lock?

Have you tried a spare key?

Got it up on stands ready to change inner track rods and one outer with a split rubber ready for track and MOT Wednesday pm, only to find both outers have split rubbers.  🤬 Quick dash over to ECP Northampton (nearest with stock) to get another track rod, fortunately the have a TRW one in stock, job done this afternoon.  Have step daughter and grandson over for lunch and the afternoon, so now also in doghouse with The Better ½.  😱

Will have to watch GP on catch up. ☹️

    Blessing in disguise tbh Chris.

If changing 2 inners and 1 outer, it would be madness not to do the lot.

    hey Paul,

I met with Nick in Wales as I was doing a road trip with a good friend and it seemed like a good opportunity.  He took a look and thought the clamshell itself seemed okay, and suggested that it was the roofs failure to fold properly that was causing the issue. I've since gone over each of the moving parts/ hinges with WD40.  I have also checked the plastic ends to the push rods that attach to the roof that often seem to snap. All of this to no avail so far.

This is a 2003 2.7, so should have been fitted with the glass window from factory.   If its any help, the roof was functioning fine when I bought the car in April.

    Hi James

I would need to see it tbh to be able to have a good look.

If it was working well in the beginning, I would possibly lean towards your motor failing slowly.

  7. James, you have posted this on the FB group as well?

Why don't you get Nick Giles to have a look with you as he makes out he knows these cars better than most and you have already shown him the issue.

Just out of interest, would I be correct in thinking that you have a pre-facelift 986 with a glass screened roof that is not a factory fit?

    Cheers Paul

I was just going to say that...  I'll also probably be using jubilee clips in place of the supplied spring clips for the inner ends.

I'll report back, might get onto it this afternoon but might have to wait 'til tomorrow.

I do the same and use jubilee clips. No idea how spring clip pliers would get any where near.

I have used the existing boots a few times in the past, after a clean they usually come up like new.

Did this on my 996 august bank hol weekend as part of a suspension overhaul.

Id be interested to hear if your TRW gaitors fit (mine didn’t even thought they are TRW & listed for the right car - and I had the use of a ramp etc….) - too smaller diameter for rack end…. reused the old ones that were in good shape.

Bought a very similar tool - when torquing up I found I needed to add the grub screws to secure the horseshoe piece as it started to widen.

Feels great now it’s all done.

The inner rack boots come in 2 sizes

Yep both spun freely in the hub carrier once I'd released the front nuts. I must be blessed...

One of the tuning fork to coffin arm bolts had been a bit mangled by a previous owner but I got it out OK 👍

    Exceptionally lucky Sir.

90% of the time I have to heat them, cut the arm and then spin them out with the gun

Cheers Paul. Replaced drop links and tuning forks today to cure a rattling front end. All came off easily.

Car is brilliant and you'll be pleased to know I am using it every day now. Be up to you for a full service and check over in the new year👍

That's fantastic. Well done for getting stuck in! :)

    Drop links came out ok?

    Look forward to seeing you

Looks like you bought that lovely viola one from Paul. Great colour 👌 Enjoy!

I think it was an Arena Red 986 that I sold Rjg but it was a few years ago now.

The Viola one that you may have seen is not for sale at the moment as I think I am going to keep it. Over winter I will do a restoration on it :)

Well Paul, that is a very fine offer. But being of the twitchy finger type. I done some forum digging and went and ordered. 😬. Have some time off this week, so planning to get it sorted.

I have a something else you might be able to help with. I will pm you. 🤙🏻

No problem, if I can help with the brakes remotely, please just shout

  14. With the nature of the OP's fault, I do not believe a handheld diagnostics reader will be any good at all unfortunately.

OP: Inspect the fuel pump relay and try another known good one.

If all good, bridge fuel pump to check if pumping

Thanks for the replies much appreciated. So this morning it is just turning over but seems not to be firing. It will not even try to run like it did yesterday when hot.

Could be any number of things in all honesty.

Fuel pump relay, fuel pump, crank position sensor etc etc

Best to get it to a specialist.
