My other car is a mini

Recommended Posts

Hi,

New to site, I have just bought (well nearly! put down deposit until Independent Porsche specialist surveys car) a 2004 Boxster S  in dark grey. Always wanted a Porsche since I passed my test eons ago, had all the comments about mid life crisis etc but passed that already:D. my other car is really a mini ! 27 years old which I totally refurbished back to the shell and rebuilt. Weekend and sunny day car only. Looking forward to going on some meetings I don,t know much about these cars but my youngest son is /was a Porsche race mechanic in GT3 European and Porsche Cup, so if the dreaded seals and clutch needs changing he will look kindly on his old man:lol:

All the best.

Hi,

Thanks for the welcome messages, realised I posted in the wrong place before I viewed the rest of the site , the kids would say I'm bit of a Neanderthal when it comes to computers. I'm hoping the Porsche specialist will come back with good news  I have done a HPI check that's all okay and a bonus is the garage will service the car before I collect sweeeeeeeet!!!

Look forward to chatting to you guys at the meets.

Thanks

Welcome :)

Check the inside faces of the brake discs. Outer faces will be fine but inner faces can be really corroded.

Learn how to clean the drain holes from old leaves

Clean old leaves from the condensers (rads) at the front - they hold water and rot. If there are some in the front, there will also be some between. Consider putting mesh over the gaps.

Do expect to spend money on it, it's a 12 year old car, but it will reward you :)  And ask here for good deals as there are several when you know where to look!

Hi,

I,m having the car inspected by a Porsche Specialist before I finally commit to buy it. I will be using Peter Morgan Consulting, I looked on line and visited a few forums and this company came up a number of times, with good recommendations. The garage is fine with this company carrying out the checks, it might seem a bit over the top for a 12 year old motor but, for peace of mind I think its worth it. Hopefully all goes well, I will be very disappointed if it turns out to be a lemon!

Thanks for the welcome.

Whats bright yellow got four wheels and sound like melon,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Yes Lemon........................................... that's what the Boxster S Anniversary turned out to be!! So I had to contact the garage today and tell them the car was not up to standard and I wanted my deposit back, following a Porsche specialist survey.  So 400 quid lighter and no car I'm starting again to look for a Porsche Boxster S. Looking on the bright side it would have cost an awful lot more to get the car brought up to standard so mixed blessing really.

Down to the West Country tomorrow to look at another car so fingers cross this one will be a good un, having had a sharp lesson in what to look for I feel more confident to look around the car looking for defects, so wish me well and hopefully before the Summer disappears i can put some pictures of MY Porsche on this site.

Wish me luck.

Disappointing! But good luck for tomorrow and post the details of the report?

It would be interesting to see what was so wrong with the car and also to see if the inspector was being realistic with his report.

All our 986s are getting on a bit and to find one that doesn't need anything doing at all is a very rare beast.

But that said you don't want to get stuck with a money pit but expecting to spend a bit is realistic.

Like haggis says there are some nice members cars for sale, a very nice blue 986s down south as I remember? Just needs £400-£500 on suspension arms for the next mot and that's not bad at all!

Good luck and hopefully the sun will still be shining when your Boxster finally lands on your drive?

How did you get on today? Any good?

I saw a nice pair of silver early 986 Boxsters out for a run through Wombourne.

Mine started playing up with its air leak this morning and I've been at the pub all afternoon with the bride, so I wouldn't be braving the engine with beer goggles on?

Always a disapointment when a deal falls through but a wise move to have it inspected.
Keep looking there are plenty of Boxster S out there and you will always get great advice from the guys here.

Hi ,

Look like the quest has started again I have found three cars worth a look and this time instead of a Porsche Inspection specialist I'm taking number 2 Son (ex Porsche Race Mechanic) with me to look at the car 2003 Boxster S low sub 50K mileage. 2nd car is a bit of a road trip down to Cornwall but again Boxster S comes with soft and hard top which again sub 50K.  Also thinking about a 2004 Boxster S automatic but don't know much about auto gearboxes on Porsche? The guy in the garage told me they are a better build than the manual boxes and not so heavy on clutches as the manual version any thoughts? Well whatever, I might be in a position to put up some pictures soon but I don,t want to jinx it.

Sounds like you've got a plan and taking someone with you who knows these cars is a big bonus!

Cant really comment on manual or auto Boxster,I've only ever driven a auto 911 which was great.

My 986s is a manual and I think it suits the car.

Good luck shopping!?

Whooooooooooooooooho  I finally have got my Porsche Boxster S :D:D late 2003, done 43,000 miles in silver (I did try for other colours but no luck!) after all the set backs of trying to find the ideal car, I collect mine tomorrow from a dealer in Epping, My son went over the car last week and found a couple of issues which the garage have told me have been repaired. So I received a text today telling me its ready. I can't wait, just changed over the car insurance and updated the breakdown cover sold my Honda Civic tonight so all ready to go. I will put some pictures on line and I really look forward to going to the first meeting. I just can't stop grinning!

Thanks for the replies,

Well got the car around the M25 car park this afternoon and the car behave itself only had a couple of sections where it "stretch its legs" mostly stuck in traffic however did spot a nice 911 and another Boxster S (black) which looked really nice. At least with all that traffic, the car's temperature behaved. Once off the M25 stopped, roof down wonderful! other car users must have thought I was an idiot driving along there with a stupid grin all over my face but I can't help it my cheeks hurt now. Even got a wave from another Porsche driver in a brand new 2016 white 911. I will try and put some pictures on today
