What have YOU done to your 986 today ?

Finally had the air conditioning checked out. Since I bought the car it has never worked and the guy at Halfords just said that it was leaking when my wife tried having it charged. To be honest, air conditioning was low on the list of priorities with this car but now that most of the big stuff has been done, I can start focussing on the niggly things. I still have a glovebox hinge replacement kit to fit as well (the spares are somewhere in my study...).

The upshot of it is that my left-hand condenser is leaking like a sieve. The pipes etc all check out fine. I figure in for a penny in for a pound, so I'll get two new condensers from Autodoc and fit them. Hopefully then I can have the system recharged and have working aircon again. I do hate it when something doesn't work properly

Once you've fixed your aircon I'd recommend you fit some grilles (I got mine from Zunsport). They work really well in protecting you from damage, and they don't noticeably impede air flow. I have them on both my cars and wouldn't be without them.

Oh definitely! I plan to fit some nice black gutter mesh or something. Zunsport look nice but they are quite dear...Then again I suppose they do protect parts that are expensive to replace.

Check out Coolpartsuk on ebay before ordering from Autodoc. Usually competitvely priced and good quality.

Autodoc = £129.56 for two condensers of the same brand as design911 sell.

Design 911 = £226.27

this does include the dessicator and all the O-rings etc. buuuuut then I can just order the dessicator and O-rings from D911 and the condensers from Autodoc.

I think that will save me a ton of money to put towards some Zunsport grilles...

2.9 987 Manual took 3.25 litres, according to my CPS receipt

That is a very different 'box to the VAG sourced 5 speed 'box on the 2.5 986.

986 5 speed should take approx. 2.25 litres (fluid level to 11mm below hole) and the 6 speed 2.8 litres (fluid level with hole).  Pelican Parts description of teh work is at this link:

Porsche Boxster Differential / Manual Transmission Fluid Change - 986 / 987 (1997-08) - Pelican Parts Technical Article

I only read briefly but is this a drop link?

If so you can run an angle grinder with a metal cutting disc down the back of the shock and cut the drop link bolt in half. They will then tap out.

I have done this a few times and is very effective.

Its free ! Thanks mainly to TROOPER88 suggestion. Sliced through  the bolt as suggested, then a bit of heat around the area with a blowtorch to be sure. A few whacks with a lump hammer and it popped out.

Very relieved after previously faffing around for hours and getting a nice collection of cuts and bruises for my trouble.

Many thanks.

Fixed my drivers side seat today!   it had had given up after years of abuse, the base foam and elastic had split so it was saggy with minimal support left in it.

Was considering changing to 987 seats but figured I'd have a go at fixing it first,  pretty easy to strip the seat down and swap the bits over, I sourced a good used foam cushion along with a replacement base support from eBay.

The foam is the same either side so went for a used passenger seat figuring it would likely have had far less use and it really worked, the seat feels spot on now,  a good firm yet comfortable seat with strong side supports,  and only cost me £35!

Great work 👍👍 really satisfying when you can repair something - almost double the pleasure of just going out and buying new 👍👍

I hauled the 986 out of the garage for the first time in a year and it took me over an hour to get it down the the local BP, get some fresh fuel in and inflate the tyres. Four separate people wanted a natter about the car. Two of my builders and two randoms at the BP. Ironically it was filthy - covered in dust and cat paw prints from the garage - and yet several remarked on how tidy is was.

Anyway it's now in being serviced and mot'd so if the weather turns next week you can blame me.

Ordered a used bumper heatshield, had the silver one delivered today, thought it would look nice once my bumpers are painted next week.  The one above is the original one, anyone know why its just a thin strip of metal and not a nice trim?  Is it because my car is a very early one?

Pre Facelift and Facelift have different exhaust and rear bumpers.

Parts cat only has one pre and one post facelift part number.  The black one in the picture does not look like a Porsche part.  I got one from salvage for mine when I ahve teh rear bumper cover repainted and repaired because a PO had drill another pair of holes and used screws rather than the proper rivets with backing washers and didn't even space the holes nicely....  I guess the original rivets had pulled through after a previous repair when the washers were not used.

Console  delete finally arrived and now fitted.

Vast improvement on leg room. 6’1” and 18st, makes a big difference.😎

Winter tyres and wheels arrived. I know it is a bit early, but they were at a good price. Plenty of summer ahead before I need to put them on hopefully.🌞🤙🏻

Had a PAS pressure pipe made up at a local hydraulic specialist for £40. It was a bit awkward to fit, but got it on there and seems to be oil tight, which is more than can be said for the one it replaced.

Gave it a wash and taxed it. Planning on driving it to work tonight, probably with a bit of Bad Company on the stereo.

Has been off the road since late last year so............Happy days are here again. 😎😀

Recently retrofitted cruise control and then got it coded to my Boxster S so to test it out drove down to the Mother in laws in Newcastle today, about 150 miles cruise control on while on the motorway and road with average speed cameras. Found it very relaxing way to  gobble up the motorway miles. I plan to take the Boxster to the South of France next year so it will be cc on all the way on the route de sol.

Thanks to the nice people on this forum for the instructions and advice to help me with the retrofit.

Fixed the centre console glove box hinge. Easy job and glad I did it but I think the hinge might be a tiny bit too big around the spindle. I may go in there and pinch it closed so it's a tighter fit but I'll drive it a bit as is and see if it bothers me.

I also found a hardtop in my colour (midnight blue) for a good price :) I've ordered the hardtop fitting kit and as soon as that is installed I'll go pick up the hard top - all part of my cunning plan to drive the Boxster year round.

Tomorrow I'll contort myself under the dash and fit the new ignition switch.

I am 1.92 metres tall and weigh over 100kgs (not sure what that is in Imperial) so I would LOVE to do the centre console delete as well. IT's easy enough to return to stock if I should ever decide to sell. BUT... I am unsure of which one to get. Can someone tell me if the beige/ brown colour of the carpet in mine is Savanah??

I have grey mats and grey seats but the carpets are sort of light brown/ beige. I hope the pics show more or less the true colour.
