TROOPER88
Hi Chaps Well having not owned a Porsche for a good few years I decided to buy a weekend toy. I wanted to find a solid example but one I could work on and improve. On Tuesday I picked up a year 2000 986 2.5 Manual in Zenith Blue. It has 95k on the clock and the same owner since 2000. I checked the MOT history before buying and new that it would need brakes all round. The list though of work required is growing and growing. Before I start anything I am going to drop it of to Charles Ivey Porsche on Monday morning. I will give them a list as to what faults I know the car has and ask them to spend a couple of hours going over the car with a fine tooth combe. I will then take the car off the road for a couple of weeks and do as much work as I can myself. Any electrical work will be completed by the specialist. So far!! : - Brake discs and pads all round. I will clean all brake pipes. - Creaks from the suspension. - Broken rear light unit - Locking wheel nut key missing - Tracking and balancing out - Central locking not operating from the key. I opened the key and someone has removed all of the components! I would guess that the previous owner has done this to get around a fault. Most likely cause central locking module in door? New key programmed by Porsche? - Sun visor missing cover over mirror - Central glove box hinge broken - Cigarette lighter missing - Exhaust blowing - The gear linkage is not aligned. There does not seem to be any / enough movement of the gearstick to the left whilst in neutral although all gears can be used ok. - Should the electric windows raise automatically once the roof is closed? I am sure there are more faults but this is all I can recall from the top of my head. I have written to the registered keeper to see if they can shed some light on any of the above but have not heard anything back as yet. I think they used the car until it got to the point where so much needed work they decided to get rid. Any tips or advice on the above?? Many thanks Paul
red rocket
Welcome. Sounds like you've got your hands full! Will have to defer to the 986 experts to answer your questions....no doubt there'll be a few along shortly.

Tex24v
Sounds like a fairly reasonable list of stuff for a car of this age, nothing on the list is too unusual for a 986. Some of them will be a nice easy/cheap fix. Bet the specialist will more than double the size of your list though. (been there !) In answer to your question, yes the windows should auto close when you latch the roof shut, if they don't then the culprit is one of the micro-switches in the roof latch itself. Many thanks Paul Welcome from another newbie 968 Zenith Blue owner, same year as yours too. My list is just as long lol. As I am still learning too I can only help on a few points: Discs and pads can be picked up online, mainly eBay for decent prices. I also have creaks from the car when going over things like speed bumps but I have yet to find the problem....I will keep you up to date. My cigarette lighter was missing also so I just bought a blanking cap for it off eBay and using it now as a 12v socket. My windows come down automatically when the roof latch is opened but they do not go back up and I have to put these up with the switches. Nobody has mentioned to me that there are any problems with this. Maybe the early year Boxsters don't go back up themselves?

Mine's a 99 2.5 Zenith blue and the windows have never gone up after the roof closes. Always seemed a bit odd, but everything else works so I didn't worry about it. Now I think about it, the "roof open" light on the dash seems to stay on for a while longer than it should? Maybe it's something else to add to my list... Anker BS
Do NOT buy critical and safety equipment on eBay. There are all too many fraudsters and scammers there. Buy them for a reputable distributor of OEM Porsche parts.

With regard buying replacement parts, I have just had a look at the GSF website. They have an offer code this weekend of OFF55. This is 55% off!!! I have added discs, pads, suspension drop links, plugs, oil, filters, wipers etc. The bill should be £1000 but is reduced to £450 with the code. There are more reputable retailers on eBay than anyware else to be honest, even Porsche dealers sell on there. It just takes some common sense to avoid any dodgy sellers and the savings on the same parts are great.
TROOPER88
Do you guys think the GSF 55% offer is worth making the most of? I will not know until next week what parts I actually require but I would not want to loose out on such a good saving. I have already added the above but would it be advisable to add any more suspension components like the inner tie rods or tie rod ends? I could return any unwanted items for a full refund. Also are the Beru F7LDUR4 the correct spark plug? I researched online and it seems to be Thanks
Jason986S
What you want to do is look at the discounted price on GSF then check that against the going rate on eBay and Euro Car Parts (with their discount). As let's be fair, GSF aren't going to sell for 55% less than everyone else are they, so it's just a marketing campaign against "list price". Euro have a "different" 30%+ discount code deal running every god damn week for example. Without it, their parts are 25% over priced haha

I have asked them to fully check the car over. The one job they will have to do is order and programme a key. When you open the car with the key, only the drivers door unlocks and if you don't start the car quickly the alarm sounds. After the engine has started, if you were to remove the key and lock/unlock the car the central locking works. i think what's happening is when you first unlock it, the car does not recognise the key but it's synchs once the engine has been started. After 5 minutes or so of not being used, it looses the synch again (if that makes any sense) i used the car a bit on the weekend and it drives really, really well I'll update later this week when the dealer get in touch. TROOPER88
Hi Well I was surprised to hear back from Porsche so soon but got a call at 4pm. I am very pleased! They thoroughly inspected the car and drove it. They agree with most of the item that I had on the list (see above). The exhaust is not blowing but the back box is showing signs of wear. They have a used but good condition sports back box I can buy for £150. The front lower wishbones need replacing. Once I receive the V5 back in my name they will order a programme a key for me. They ran a full diagnostics and there were no faults present. They mentioned that both air conditioning rads were leaking but we both agreed this was not an issue as in the hot weather I will have the roof off! Overall they were pleasantly surprised with the car and I am only being charged 1 hour labour. I will collect it tomorrow and begin the jobs very soon. Paul Fisher
Welcome Trooper. I'm new to Boxster ownership and enjoying mine every day as a daily driver. Just for the record mines 99 model and my windows don't go up either after the roof is raised. Good luck with the repairs and keep us updated. TROOPER88
Hi Tbh I am to busy at the moment to work on and drive the car as I am refurbishing a flat. I removed the locking wheel bolts and the Porsche specialist sold me a stainless steel back box ( I think it had been used on a demo car). So last week I put the car on the ramps and thought id have a go at doing the exhaust! The bumper removal was a nightmare. It clearly has not been removed before. None of the screws would undo and the three screws under the spoiler were only just visible and I had to drill them out. Once the bumper was removed I took one look at the exhaust and new that I would not be able to remove it. I dropped it to a local exhaust centre. They had a quick look but wanted me to order new clamps and sleeves before they would do it incase they damaged the fitted sleeves when removing. I also asked them to do the tracking whilst there. They called this morning saying the exhaust has been done but they can not do the tracking as there is a nut on the rear that they can not move?? Maybe something linked to a track control arm. On the phone he mentioned an upper suspension arm but said he would show me when I collect the car. Anyone know which part this will be I need to replace? Thanks
edc
It will be the eccentric bolt.
K.I.T.T.
Sounds like the eccentric bolts on the rear conrol arm. I had this problem. I have a not so great pic of this: See just above the right anti roll bar bush. DSC_0632 by ash_ashy_mo, on Flickr The wishbone / coffin arm can have some stubborn bolts too...
