Servicing Advice Needed for a Newbie

I would if in the first instance, you really want it serviced by a garage, from where you live take it to Lee  @Cotswold Porsche has an excellent reputation on here, and get a full appraisal at the same time.

It's always a good option, might be something else needs work first.

I'm about a mile from Wilmslow OPC, but if I was wanting a service done, I'd take a look at Revolution Porsche at Brighouse. They'll give it a good look over and let you know what maintenance is on the horizon. Get very good reviews on here.

Why would you not go the main dealer?

Because you tend to find the most experienced staff at indys and they generally take a more common sense approach to maintenance. Also, although the basic service price may not differ much, the labour rate for any additional work will be much higher at an OPC and with an older car, there will always be work that needs doing. I've seen too many examples of people who have taken a perfectly decent 986 to an OPC and been charged £2-3k to get it upto spec, when the work could be done by an Indy at under half the cost with aftermarket parts.

If I had a 718 or 981 then I'd get it serviced at the OPC for the sake of the stamp in the book, but I wouldn't expect it to be done any better. Each to their own?

Bought an 03 986 S about 5 weeks ago. 74k miles with Fsh from opc and indie but last owner only did 4K miles per year so had 2 consecutive minor services (1 per year) and skipped the major.

On low mileage cars it's not uncommon for the minor/major/minor sequence to become major/minor/minor (inspection)/major. There could even be a third or more minor(inspection) service. When I phoned OPC about a major service they asked about my annual mileage (about 2.5k) and advised only to have a repeat minor service.

Hi all,

Just as an update on this, I ended up taking my car to a place called Jordell's just outside of Oxford (they specialise in Porsche, Merc, BMW). They were brilliant from beginning to end so I can't recommend them enough (there were a range of Porsche's waiting in the car park so it would appear that I am not alone).

They charged £220 for oil, filters, brake fluid, and inspection which seemed entirely reasonable.

They found a few minor issues with the car but given that it's coming on 19 years, I can't really complain.

Front Lower Suspension Arm bushes getting old

Slight corrosion on the brake pipes (which they have oiled)

Corrosion on the exhaust manifold/cat bolts. Currently okay but will eventually rot out.

...And front brake pads wearing thin (which I knew about).

I'll replace the pads myself and then maybe get the bolts and bushes sorted in spring next year (he said that there was no play in the bushes but they were beginning to look a little tired).

Anyway, I'm quietly relieved and very happy to recommend Jordell.

Good stuff @Lennym1984 always good to get an end to a thread. Was any mentioned made of having a four wheel alignment done after the suspension work.

I know many members here have found good benefit from this, particularly with the older cars. About £100 to £130 from garages that are equipped for this.

I had all four lower coffin arms replaced on mine and a four wheel laser alignment, the car drove completely different, for the better thankfully  :)

Brake pipes very common issue, clean and oil should see you right for a while yet.

Typical replacement items for the lower suspension, nothing all of us haven't seen before.

manifold/cat bolts rust out in time, good opportunity to upgrade manifolds if you are that way inclined.

I'm a pretty basic home mechanic but was able to change over the brake pads on mine in an afternoon, so something you could DIY or pay someone to do.

Welcome by the way :)
