Test drive

Having read everyone else's experience, thought I would bore everyone and share mine of the 'sound'.

I've had my 986 for over 8 years now, the best thing about it is I can fiddle and not have to worry about voiding a warranty.  To be honest, I enjoy tinkering with it and it's been a great car reliability wise, however, it's old and the new ones look so much better and my new car fund is burning a hole in my pocket.

Dovehouse Motors are my local specialist and always have a good supply of Porsche's and are really friendly company.  The cars I requested a test drive were a 63 plate 981 S and a 16 plate 718 base - neither with sports exhaust. Yes the 718 did sound Beetlesque when it first started but I actually preferred the sound it made under full acceleration (in fact I preferred everything about it).  The 981 seemed quiet in comparison, yes it made the 6 cylinder glorious howl but you had to wring it's neck whereas the 718 had a rawness at any rpm I really liked.  The price's were similar but the 981 was twice as old and just looked over priced and nowhere near as pristine.  I was so tempted to buy the 718 but it had the basic aircon not the automatic which is a big no-no for me.

I would like to thank Chris at Dovehouse for his time, advice and letting me try both back to back.  Hopefully, he can source a 718S for me with lots of toys.

^^^ this

Had a 718s fully loaded as a loaner

I loved it. Everything about it. It sounded loud and rude compared to my 987 (not as “nice” but plenty of it)

i really hope that everyone who is 6 or nothing keeps the 718 prices low because I want one.

Good, a fellow admirer.

Have been contemplating this for a while but with all the sl*gging the new engine gets, was worried about residuals.  This is the first time I've looked at one.

Worryingly, I didn't hate my 986 after the test drive - actually thought the exhaust sounded pretty good.

My 718 has the basic aircon, never really bothered me as I mainly drive with the top down.

I love the deep bellow of the 4-pot turbo, although does sound like a bag of spanners when it's cold.

Once I'd test driven a 718 last year, my 987S felt like a truck to drive

Yeh I think they have fiddled with the basic exhausts on the 718 a bit and so there seems a few different variations available, even though nothing is advertised as different as such. The last 718S  I had on loan had a very loud exhaust even though it didn’t in theory have PSE, on checking the mufflers it was no surprise it was loud as they were 1/2 the size of those on my 981 (with PSE).

I'm another that wouldn’t let standard aircon put me off, and of course your rational about 718 prices being depressed relatively is an advantage if you are buying a 2 year old car.

Manual heater controls plus they are hidden behind the shifter would drive me mad, even my old 986 has auto aircon.

I didn't notice a drone from the exhaust on the 718, had the roof up and down and it didn't sound any different or louder when cruising from the 981 at low throttle settings.  I read about disabling Soundaktor, maybe the previous owner had done this then? I hate droning exhausts so that would definitely put me off.

Suspension was awesome, no perceivable roll, comfortable yet soaked up the poor road surface - how can Porsche do that and other manufacturers cant?

Problem now is finding the perfect spec used car, have never been interested in leasing and my tight bone won't let me spend over £70k on a car.

The pse on the 718 has changed. Early ones were very similar to the 981 mufflers ie a corner cut out of the corner and the valve.  The new ones are half the size. Originals were drony but the later ones arent.

I had mine fitted retrospectively because of this

The car didn't have PSE, was it just sports exhaust cars people were moaning about the drone?

The car was plenty loud enough for me without a sports exhaust.  I'm test driving a 718S on the weekend so will see if that's different to the 2 litre.

Yes complaints from pse normal exhaust ok but why would you use pse on a motorway trip? I leave in normal mode . Sport and pse when having fun

  • 1 month later...

I’m looking forward to testing a 718S to see how it goes/sounds.

Had a Z4M in the past and I’ve got access to a 981 Cayman S but for some reason I’m drawn to the 4pot Turbo

I seem to have sensitive hearing so high revving engines make my ears ring and buzz for ages after a spirited drive.

I've got a 4pot in my MK3 TTS (daily driver) and think it’s great apart from the fake DSG ‘farts’

Hopefully OPC Leeds will lend me one for the day.

Thing about the 718S is that it's too good.  I was barely having any fun with it unless exceeding the speed limit by a long way.  You have to feel sorry for the salesmen & women who have to endure being in the passenger seat test driving with the likes of me.

Sure they would sell a lot more if test drives were confined to race tracks.
