just remember that I'm sure the 2.9 is not the new style engine

Jim - may have taken your comment out of context - but 2.9 is definitely non ims "new style" engine - it was only available in the 987.2 - when we got to 981 it went back to 2.7.- the "auto" version is PDK not Tiptronic and the interior is more modern version of the 987 (black not silver and different steering wheels etc.)

This is spot on - I have a 2.9 987.2 - engine is definitely new style non-ims - but does not have DFI. Only the 987.2 S had the DFI change. 981 had both mods.

Maybe get a inspection done before you buy, might be the best £300 you spend, https://www.porscheinspections.com/index.html

Also only buy from a specialist dealer eg. (Portiacraft, Cridfords, 911 virgin, Maundrells, Zuffenhaus etc) they are likely to give you some warranty and will have checked the car over.

If your kids are young, also make sure the car has the passenger airbag switch, as not all do, and its £400 for  dealer to fit it.

The cheap 987.2 posted on here looks cheap for a reason. Its totally base spec and if the exterior is as rough looking as the interior I wouldn't want that one, never seen a gen2 interior looking that worn!!

The 5 speed box has its advantages, the 6 speed ratios are closer stacked but the top gear is similar between 5th in a 5 speed and 6th in a 6 speed. In my experience I have actually found the 5 speed to be a sweeter box as it's ready to go straight away and is a bit slicker, whereas the 6 speed can be quite notchy when cold and takes a bit of time to warm up (both experienced on 986s). On certain 987 model years the 5 speed is also cheaper to tax by quite some margin due to the gearing dropping it into the lower CO2 band

Likewise with Port injection vs DFI. DFI/GDi has its disadvantages. Carbon buildup can occur on all GDi engines because the fuel injector no longer 'cleans' the intake valves. Port does not suffer from this problem. Port also runs at much lower pressure so does not need a HPFP which simplifies the system. The components such as injectors are also much cheaper/simpler as they run at much lower pressures

GDi tends to be stronger at higher rpms but port is stronger at lower. That's why some cars come with both systems fitted and utilised (latest 1.5 Ford fiesta ST being a good example).

I'd almost be inclined to say that the 2.9 is for me the most likely variant not to generate a large bill yet still comes close to the budget, issues such as IMS arent present and bore scoring isn't widely reported, it's still the 9A1 with the closed deck design and the powertrain components are simpler than an equivalent DFI variant with less to go wrong. It offers similar power to a 986 3.2 and can be coupled to a manual transmission for maximum simplicity. If I ever do decide to move on from the 986s then it will be this variant I choose.

if its the auto trader ad, i don't actually see how you can tell that the interior is that worn - apart from 2 switches?

thank a lot for your knowledge - without doubt, the 2.9 is the one now that i am favouring (although Cayman rather than Boxster)

I spent a long time doing the man maths and the 2.9 ended up being the sweet spot. The previous owner had some scary bills but I've made a point of shopping/travelling around for the best prices. On second thoughts that might be a good way to save some cash - buy a car that needs some work from an expensive part of the country, get them to price it in then get it done somewhere much cheaper. I couldn't believe the spread of prices for small jobs..

Find one , like mine with the 6 box option ?😀

Love mine.

Yep ! My 987.1 SE has 6 speed - can be a bit dangerous though - only because my daily is a 5 speed Fiesta and it’s reverse is where 6 is on the pork 😱 i’ve come close to putting the Fiesta into reverse from 5th after i’ve been in the Boxster but luckily just pulled back in time once or twice.

I knew someone whose party piece was to dip the clutch on their Morris Marina so the reverse lights came on after canning it out of a golf club and up a hill.

One day they got it wrong and actually got into reverse gear whilst the car was in forward motion with predictable field ending results.

Fortunately they walked away from it but the Marina didn't buff out

There's been a few times when I've been flat out in top gear and pulled back just in time too 😜🤣
