Even if the car drives ok I would be very wary of buying any 986 with original suspension components still fitted, unless this is factored into the asking price.

As you say, a big history file is key here and well worth scrutinising it properly to see what has and what hasn't been replaced.

Yep I made that mistake 😶 two weeks in and... Ut oh

We normally advise not to worry too much about mileage if car has been well looked after. Members on here have cars on 150,000+. You may not be able to reply because you don't have enough posts yet, but you can probably pm the seller. I'll tag him here so he knows anyway @starbuckhouse

It’s at the top end of my budget too, and 320 miles from me!

We always recommend travelling if it's appears to be a good car. Plenty of us have.

Another question. If a Porsche is being sold by a specialist dealership, is it still a good idea to have an independent inspection carried out?

Most people don't go as far as getting an inspection. I bought mine from a specialist in Sussex. Having visited the seller a couple of times, and visited another specialist elsewhere (Maundrells near Wantage) i felt more confident buying there as a complete novice. Generally the quality of cars at the  specialists seemed better and whilst their prices were higher they were very responsive to fixing anything i picked up as well as pointing out other things they would do that i'd missed. By contrast other 'regular' dealers didn't seem to know the front of a Boxster from the back of a bus!

This specialist has a 2002 51 plate 3.2S tip with 73,000 miles. They have rebuilt the engine following an IMS issue (987 bearing shaft, new bearings, piston rings etc) and are asking £6,999 for it. I think that’s a bit steep even after the rebuild.

I can see 2 differences to mine , Mine has a code for the radio and an On board computer.. Didnt even know mine had an Obd , so I might go and see what that has, because mine seems pretty basic

Really only 3 options I thought I might want heated seats, stability management and Bose.  It looks like a clean car and has had the following works undertaken:

It has:
New windscreen, both windows regulator replaced,
All six coil packs replaced.
Convertible roof operating cables and rod end caps replaced.
Front and rear disks and pads and hand brake shoes replaced.
New front tyres.

and new clutch about 2 years ago. IMS not changed.  Owner did last service himself and therefore not stamped

Depends, I paid more for our 04 2.7. ..

The car would be worth what you or someone is willing to pay

Seems mad not to change the IMS when the clutch is out

Thought the same but had this answer from specialist...

Looking back at the job card for that registration we did replace the rear main and intermediate shaft seals, so we would have checked the bearing condition at that time. If any play or roughness was found we would have advised the customer to replace the bearing, so the bearing was ok in April 2018.

Nuts. The bearings are not that expensive and I'm amazed a specialist wouldn't have given the customer the option
