Single to twin exhaust tailpipes

Single on my 981 currently.

Non PSE obviously.  I'm in a small minority who are quite happy with the sound of the standard system and have no want for PSE so fitting that as a solution is not for me.

However aestheically I much prefer the look of the twin pipes.  Unfortunately Porsche want £618 for the twin tailpipes which is an option I won't be taking.

There's an ebay seller, Cybox, regularly advertising a twin conversion for £275 but the pipes seem to protrude too much which puts me off.  Anyone fitted one and could give feedback please..?

Anyone know of anyother reasonably priced solutions out there please?  (everything else I've managed to find via google seems to be priced north of £275)

Thanks!

There's a stainless steel twin pipe, part 98111136100 ,  which is nearer £500 (yes still too much) before any OPC discount.

I'm guessing Porsche quoted you on the Chrome tipped twin pipes ?

I missed out on a second-hand one on here a while back - also interested to hear what anyone has to say...

Yes I think someone was selling two.

I waited like 5 years, paid Porsche full price for them, then a load came up for sale :(  In fairness I think they were chrome and I wanted black.

Thanks iborguk 👍

OPC parts guy didn't give me a part number or advise type but I wouldn't be surprised if that was for chrome.  Which I don't need, stainless preferred.  Not black.

And thanks for the links hadn't seen those.  Need to widen my search criteria obviously 🙂

Wonder if the Germany locate item will also attract some post brexit import tax...

Would the 718 ones fit? I recall that they stick out a tad more but think they fit may widen your search criteria.

Well IF 718 ones fit....

They have put "black" in the title but they clearly are not https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384506114319?hash=item598659b10f:g:cocAAOSw7QVhlUC7

I believe 981 fit 987.1 (different engines). I bought a 987.2 (Cayman R) tailpipe and fitted it, and the 981 has the same engine as the 987.2. But I recall 718 has the 4 cyl engine so not sure if they changed the exhaust dimensions in any way...  The usual way is to at least check how the part number starts.

It definitely fits I think a chap I know had one and he tells me it just sticks out a little further.

Wondered whether 987s would fit, seen a couple of ads stating 987/981

Don't really want it sticking out any further though 😄

These were used for approx 12k miles and have been in my shed for the past 5 years.  They are (I think) the steel finished tips.  The tips havn’t got much pitting but obviously need a polish up with a buffing wheel/autosol or similar if you want a mirror finish (got to admit I leave mine to develop an even sooty coating which after about 6 months just looks like the black finished product).  The fastenings look a bit rusty but this is just surface rust, I’ll get a socket on them tomorrow and loosen and retighten the nuts just to ensure they are fine.  These haven’t been cleaned up at all other than the removal of the majority of the soot on the tips when I removed them 5 years ago, so they look at their worst currently.

So you are aware.  To fit these you might have to loosen one side of your exhaust at the cat to give you enough wiggle room to get them on. It you do have to do that then it raises the issue of the state of the bolts on the joint.

let me know if you are interested and we will work out a price.

Here are a couple more photos of the ends of the tips,  there doesn’t appear to be any significant pitting here IMO.  However my Dremeling did reveal some slight pitting on the bottom side of the exhaust tips. This is the bit adjacent to the ground when fitted, so if you are trying to impress magnifying glass wielding worms they may not be for you. Bear in mind that the photos are quite zoomed in, from a yard away these are near invisible.  I expect any s/h tips are likely to have some pitting like this.

I also checked the nuts and these are fine.

As above - taking them off might be a real pain as you may need to loosen other fasteners in order to prise the two sides apart to get that cross-piece out, and Porsche exhaust fasteners are notorious for not playing ball. I didn't want to lie under the car swearing and paid my indie to fit them, they then charged me two hours because of all the frozen fasteners they had to deal with just to get it in.

Yeah I'm prepared for a bit of a fight when I change it.  Did a 986 back box swap a few years back, there was a lot of swearing 😁

Swap completed, from this:

To this:

I did get the car on stands to have a go at the swap myself but the clamp bolts connecting the silencers to the cats were quite corroded - one side needs undoing to allow the old tail to be removed and the new one fitted.  Consequently I gave up pretty quickly and paid for an hour's labour at a local exhaust specialist I've used before.  This proved a good decision as one bolt broke and the other they were unable to undo, so had to extract both using tools and expertise I don't have.  If I'd had more of a go at it I'd probably have finished up there in any case but with bloody knuckles and a couple of hours wasted crawling about on a cold garage floor with the car on stands.

Much improved to my eyes.  As these were an optional fit to the 2.7 I think it's an ok upgrade to make.

Thanks to Greenman for the offer and sale at a reasonable price and getting them to me so quickly 👍

Interestingly, Boxster designers have consistantly challange the deeply held ideas, aesthetics and traditions of "twin exhausts" . If you like twin pipes, fit them and I personally would not worry if they were an option or not. Nice pics btw 👍
