The only thing my 981 (non S) is missing is the PSE.  Anyone got recent prices on a retrofit.  It is an OPC only job or could a good independent do it.  I only want to go OEM on the exhaust side.

Gives you the ballpark £. https://tequipment-finder.porsche.com/uk/981/Boxster/&ac=product&pr=660ACA72C3728B9FC12579810049EBBB

Some variation in OPC pricing if you ring around. An indy offered to do the retrofit on mine (987.2) but there wasn't much in it re pricing between them and an OPC, still considering if I want this toy at some point...

@Greenman I think bought a second hand unit and had a local place fit it but still needed to go to Porsche to have it all coded in, it's far more than just an exhaust, with valves and vacuum pipes and a new switch block on the centre console.

I was lucky I negotiated in one being fitted as part of my OPC car purchase deal. But I would say it's worth the money having OPC fit it, gives you 2 years warranty on the parts too I think.

Swindon OPC have recently quoted me £3000.00 (RPM slightly less) for my 987.2. Seems they don't have all the parts available for 987.2's at least at present. That quote was a couple of hundred more than  when I enquired a year or so ago.

Hence I am pondering the Milltek option instead...

drove a 981 without PSE and it sounded cr*p!

Got to say I completely disagree with this!   The none PSE cars still sound great they are just much quieter, a simple exhaust can’t make a cr*p sounding car sound great. The fundamental quality of sound is all there without the PSE, it’s just it’s highlighted and heightened by the PSE (and crackles and pops added).    Certainly if the car is not a daily then the PSE adds a level of thrill that just isn’t there without, so highly recommended regardless.

If you stand outside and a 981 without PSE fitted drives past on full chat and then compare that to a 981 fitted with a PSE you will agree the 981 without the PSE sounds no where near as tasty, my friend and I compared the two. If you’re driving the car I agree the engine sounds great but the exhaust note is nothing like the PSE fitted car and sounds cr*p.

I had PSE retro fitted by my local OPC back in Oct 20 at a cost of £2118 as my car had the sports tail pipes. When they first quoted they were a bit over the advertised price on the tecquipment website so I just brought this to there attention and they  matched the price advertised 👍

Awesome mod which obviously gives you the opportunity to have it in smiles and grin mode or more sedate sensible mode 😂😂

Have you still got the 488?  A non-PSE'd Boxster must make you feel like you've gone deaf !!   Or do the turbos squash that flat plane shriek?  I haven't experienced that model "in the flesh" so to speak.

I was out with one last year and when we parked up the driver asked why mine was so loud. 😂

Why not consider a non-OEM exhaust?  I’m getting a Designtek fitted to my 981CS next week, it’s much cheaper and still has the valved option, controlled with a key fob button.   I’m not expecting it to impact resale value as much as the difference in cost versus OEM PSE and some can sound as good if not better than the PSE…

On a previous Boxster S 987 that I owned I just felt that the standard exhaust sound was much too restrained and quiet for my taste so I firstly fitted a fabspeed back box which was way too loud you just couldn’t have a conversation in the car. Took that system back off and sold it. So a few months later I thought I would try again and this time I fitted a Milltek back box but found this too quiet so took it back off and went back to stock. I sold that Boxster a few months later.

Fast forward 10 years and as I had now retired I just had to get myself back into a Boxster ( Hard to live without them once you have owned one) I bought a nice 986S that had the PSE fitted and I have to say the sound from it is just sublime and exactly what I was trying to achieve all those years ago. I know we all have different tastes and exhaust notes are subjective but I think Porsche know what they are doing when it comes to designing exhausts for these cars. Just my two bobs worth.

I completely agree, though I have been reliably informed that the DesignTek Valvetronic exhaust is akin to the PSE in terms of tone and retaining the character of the flat six.

With the discount from Design 911 and fitting by a specialist it works out at around £1150.  And it’s full stainless, whereas the PSE is mild steel.

Here are a couple of clips of it fitted to a 981:

There was a chap in the Cayman group that had his original exhaust opened and modified for extra noise, a bit low rent perhaps but to be honest it sounded pretty good when he shared it so if you are the type that keeps that button on all of the time it may be worth considering. If I could find the link I would share.
